Riverside Trout & Powder Retreat — Steps from the Roaring Fork River

Welcome to your mountain getaway in the heart of charming Old Town Basalt, a perfect year-round escape in the stunning Roaring Fork Valley. This spacious, beautifully appointed 1-bedroom, 1-bath condo sits directly on the Roaring Fork River, less than 50 feet from the water, close enough to fall asleep to the sound of the current and step outside for a cast before breakfast.

The Space:
This bright one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo sleeps 4–5. Downstairs, the living room features a queen American Leather sleeper sofa — the springless design that actually sleeps as well as a real bed — alongside an electric fireplace and smart TV, opening onto the kitchen and dining area. The private balcony sits just steps above the river, perfect for morning coffee, evening wine, or simply watching the river go by — anglers casting, birds along the bank, and wildlife passing through below. Upstairs, the bedroom loft has a queen bed, a second smart TV, a matching American Leather twin sleeper, and a full dresser and closet. A portable AC unit is available for warmer days.

Tastefully decorated with solid, comfortable furniture throughout, the condo offers ample storage, an in-unit washer/dryer, and a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher — everything you need for a longer stay. Though with downtown Basalt just steps away, you may find yourself eating out anyway. Fishing and ski touches add a warm, personal feel true to the mountains.

• Free parking and WiFi
• Fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances
• Cozy living area with flat-screen TV and fireplace
• Second smart TV in loft bedroom
• Private balcony
• In-unit washer/dryer

Location:
Three blocks from downtown Basalt's restaurants, shops, and summer concert series. The Rio Grande Trail runs right along the river for biking and walking, and a riverside park two blocks away offers summer swimming and winter cold plunges. The building sits right on Gold Medal fishing waters, with anglers wading the riffles below throughout the season — but whether you're here to fish, float, bird-watch, or just relax above the water, the river is the main event.

The four Aspen Snowmass mountains are about 20 minutes away (or a short RFTA ride) — close enough for ski season, X Games, and Aspen's food, wine, and music festivals, without the Aspen price tag. Summer brings the same mountains alive with an extensive hiking network. For a day trip, historic Marble and Redstone offer mining history, the Crystal River drive, and access to the iconic Crystal Mill.

Year-Round Activities:
World-class skiing in winter, fly fishing and festivals in summer, stunning foliage in fall, and quiet wildlife-watching getaways in spring. Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, and the Maroon Bells are all an easy drive away.

Book your stay and discover why Basalt is one of the Roaring Fork Valley's best-kept secrets — minutes from Aspen, worlds away in charm and tranquility.

Connie and I spent decades working on environmental conservation in Central Africa, and you'll see that history woven through the condo, from the artwork to the carved pieces on the shelves. It was a life built around wild places and the people who protect them, and it's shaped how we think about travel, hospitality, and home ever since.

These days, home is here in the Roaring Fork Valley, and we couldn't imagine a better place to land. Between the two of us, you'll find fly rods, ski gear, and hiking boots in regular rotation. We're happiest on the river chasing trout, out on the mountain in winter, or on a trail somewhere with a good view. Hosting felt like a natural extension of all that. We love sharing this valley with people, whether that means pointing you to our favorite fishing spots on the Fryingpan, a trail we think you'll love, or just a good dinner spot downtown.

We hope you leave feeling like you got a taste of why we love it here, and maybe come back to see us again.

Why they chose this property

When we found this condo on the Roaring Fork, we knew right away it was the one. You're less than 50 feet from the river, close enough to fall asleep to the sound of it, and just three blocks from downtown Basalt, so you can walk to dinner, coffee, or the Sunday market without ever getting in a car.

For us, it came down to access. Fly fishing on the Fryingpan and the Roaring Fork is minutes away, some of the best Gold Medal water in Colorado. In winter, all four Aspen Snowmass mountains are a short drive (or a hop on RFTA), and in summer the hiking around Basalt, Redstone, and Marble is endless. We've spent decades working on conservation around the world, and this valley, with its rivers, mountains, and small-town feel, is where we come home to recharge. We wanted a place that put guests right in the middle of all of it: the water, the peaks, and a walkable town that still feels like itself.

What makes this property unique

This isn't your typical mountain rental. Step inside and you'll notice African art and carved pieces mixed in with vintage skis and mountain landscapes, a reflection of the years Connie and I spent working in Central Africa before settling into life here in the valley. It's an unusual combination, but it's genuinely us, and we think it makes for a home that feels warmer and more personal than most.

Then there's the location. You're truly riverfront, less than 50 feet from the Roaring Fork, close enough to hear it from the deck. Most places in Basalt claim to be "near" the river; this one actually sits on it. And you're still just three blocks from downtown, so you get the quiet of the water without giving up walkability to restaurants, coffee, and shops.

We've also tried to make the space genuinely functional for the things people come here to do. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking real meals, there's gear storage and space for fishing and ski equipment, and the layout comfortably sleeps a small group without feeling cramped. It's a condo built by people who actually fish, ski, and hike this valley themselves, and we think that shows in the details.
