About this property
1865 farmhouse near Lake Gaston!
THE FARMHOUSE IS NOT ON LAKE GASTON, BUT IT'S ONLY A MILE AWAY. The Isle of Rest was once a 4,000 acre working farm originally built around 1810. The main house burned down after being struck by lightening and the current home was completed in 1865. The property was divided into two parcels by the family in the mid 1920's. Most of the land was sold to developers in the 1950's when Lake Gaston was formed by damming the Roanoke River. The homestead was lived in until 1973 when the matriarch of the family passed away. Her heirs allowed the land to sit for thirty years and fall into disrepair. I purchased the homestead and 25 acres in 2005 and set off to restore the grand old house. My family and I use it as a weekend getaway throughout the year and stay for a week several times during the summer. We put the boat in down the street at Holly Creek Marina, shoot skeet, take nature walks, enjoy the deer and other wildlife, and just relax. We recently decided to try renting the house out to help with the expenses and to share the wonderful setting with others. If you are a nature lover, reader, writer, boater, hunter or all the above you will really enjoy staying at the Isle of Rest. We have allowed two weddings and two business retreats to use the property and everyone loved it. Events, like a wedding, will be charged the weekly rate regardless of number of days on the property.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful time and loved the house and property. I would definitely recommend this property. We all wish we could have stayed longer. The only negative was a lack of a toaster in the kitchen. We loved our time there. Thank you Adam!

Wonderful Experience
The house is gorgeous with comfortable beds. The air conditioning worked great, despite the heat wave. The pond and the resident ducks made afternoons lovely. You can see all the stars and the Milky Way from the front porch. Overall, this was a wonderful property for a gathering away from the city.
Breathtaking and charming are two words that come to mind. As you drive up to the property emerges a gorgeous farmhouse and it instantly transforms you into a state of vacation and relaxation with the pond, ducks, geese, and other wildlife. Ample room to move about on the property and to stay inside. The host was amazing and extremely accommodated us. Our great dane loved running free on the property and swimming in the pond. Same goes for our boys who enjoyed fishing, swimming, and hanging out by the firepit. I would greatly recommend this place to everyone.
Our family had an awesome 5 days at the Isle of Rest. It was nice to read the historical information about the property in a binder that was set up for guests. The house is extremely spacious. Plenty of room for all. The property and pond were well maintained and beautiful. The back screened porch was lovely to sit out on in the evenings and during the rain we had while there. Will definitely go back.
We needed a retreat during a stressful week.
Isle of Rest felt like home. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have stayed in such a welcoming place and thank you Adam for being the perfect host.
We were looking for a place to get away from it all for a few days, just the three of us and our dog. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. The house is historic, beautiful, clean, spacious, and very comfortable. The A/C and wifi were fantastic. Overall, the grounds are lovely. We spent a lot of time at the pond fishing (catch & release), hanging out with the ducks, kayaking, watching deer from the front porch, reading in the multiple hammocks, making s'mores, and playing darts on the back porch. We brought our groceries and prepared all of our food at the house. Everything we needed was there (big bonus was the crockpot for BBQ pulled chicken). We had a fantastic time and plan to come back.
Great house. Adam was very accommodating and the property was in wonderful condition. We would stay again!

Beautiful home on private estate. Lots of interesting history. Owner was very accommodating. Sent a text to make sure we found the house and had everything we needed the first night. Was very open to make sure we were comfortable, which we were. We will come back for a longer stay.

Beautiful property with so much history!
I rented this house to share with family during a 60th birthday celebration for my mom! We all loved the place! It's tucked away in a nice, private secluded area. It's only a few min from the lake & very close to Tanglewood Shores, which is why I decided to rent it.
The only drawback is the one full bathroom but we made it work! Enjoyed the views & even hopped in the kayaks in the pond!

Thanksgiving At The Farm
My family and I spent the week of Thanksgiving at "the farm". We could not have selected a better location for our family celebration. Our ages ranged from 75 to 2 and there was something for all of us to do if we so chose. Three of our granddaughters enjoyed kayaking on the gorgeous pond closely supervised by two resident ducks who welcomed having a little company. The perfect weather kept us outside most of the time during the day and early evening. We played corn hole, softball, rode on our four wheeler, fished/catch and release of course; and the wonderful fire pit that everyone gathered around early evening for "toast the sunset" time, making s'mores, and happy conversations.
The front porch swing was so inviting and we enjoyed having a little quiet time to read and relax. The inside of the house is quite spacious and accommodated our family very nicely. Everyone had a comfy bed and slept so good every night. This beautiful plantation home is beautifully restored and takes one back in time....(if you're old enough to relate to "golden" times:) The living room was inviting and each evening we sat by the fire and played games, read, played the cherished piano, and reminisced about our good ole days. Thanksgiving Day we enjoyed a hearty feast and the dining room table is large enough to accommodate our crew. This was so much fun!
May I recommend this lovely VRBO rental for any family/friend event. Having 25 acres to roam was the icing on the cake.

Isle of Rest
We just got back from this beautiful home on a private piece of property dating back to the 1800! The scenery is breathtaking and it is peaceful and quiet! The grounds are gorgeous and well-maintained! We had plenty of room to set up a volleyball net and had games ideas that were endless! The house was spacious and clean with beds for many! As we sat on the front porch each evening, we talked about family memories and talked about the olden days, a perfect setting! The gentleman, Adam that owns the home is very accommodating and friendly! If you need to relax, and feel like you are away from the busy hustle and bustle of life this is the house for you! A few visits to the lake will make this an unforgettable vacation!

Isle of Rest is a piece of heaven!!
My family and I rented this home for an extended weekend and absolutely loved it. The owner is very hospitable and the property is well cared for. It is secluded enough for privacy but close enough to access major restaurants and grocery stores. Lake access is only a mile away but there is plenty of fun to have onsite. My three kids range in age from 3 to 12 but the property had activities to appeal to every member of the family. The house is 150 years old and has a lot of history and character yet still has modern amenities that you would expect. We would highly recommend this property to future renters.

Extremely satisfied - well kept and huge property with good mix of modern conveniences and history
I had a guy's weekend at the property and found the place perfect for sports (football, frisbee, wiffle ball, etc...) and games. There are lots of outdoor spots and features. The house has a good flow and the rooms are huge. One highlight was the parlor room, which had a grand, historical feel. The air conditioning was an added bonus, as the house was cool day and night even in the midst of a hot weekend. The appliances and kitchen were pleasing and there was plenty of basic food stuffs to supplement what we brought. The grill was great. The owner was very responsive to my emails and check in / check out was seamless. We saw a number of wild animals (deer, birds, etc...) and because of the surrounding landscape and lack of neighbors, there is that rural silence that is so relaxing. Finally, the locations is very convenient - just a few miles off I-85.

A Piece of Heaven
The Isle of Rest was the perfect getaway for our family! We felt like we were reliving history on an old Virginia plantation with the beautifully preserved home, a huge swimming pond with ducks, an old family graveyard, and original buildings from the 1800s. Yet, there are modern amenities to make your stay comfortable. It was truly a fabulous experience, and we have every intention of returning for yet another visit back in time.
Moreover, the owner was gracious and generous. He did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable - provided a welcome letter and information about the surrounding areas, told us to help ourselves to anything in the pantry and house, set the logs in the fire pit prior to our arrival, gave us vegetables from the garden, and stopped by to meet us and make sure we had everything we needed. A true gentleman!
Lastly, we loved the fact that we were able to drop our boat in Lake Gaston at a local marina just a mile from the house for only $5! The lake is absolutely beautiful and so quiet. It was evident that it has not yet been discovered by tourists.
Our vacation at the Isle of Rest was one of the best we've ever had. I highly recommend this amazing historical plantation for a truly relaxing experience!

FAMILY FRIENDLY GETAWAY
The photos do not do this house justice. It is a beautiful and peaceful step back in time. All the kitchen amenities, plus cable, front porch rockers, pond, grilling. Can't say enough about this great place.
We will definitely be back!
