Already planning a return
I spent nine wonderful days in December. The location is great - away from the crowds, with amazing snorkeling a very short kayak or swim away. I planned the trip with snorkeling in mind and my expectations were blown away. I spent almost everyday in the water, both on the reef in the middle of the bight and off the point out on “the wall.” I’ve done a lot of snorkeling, including the marine reserve in Belize and the barrier reef in the Bahamas, and the reef at this location is the best I’ve seen. Angelfish, octopuses, parrotfish, eels, blue tangs, lionfish, and so much more.
We stayed in the villa. I had originally booked the boathouse, but the villa was available when we arrived so Marcia let us pick between the two. Both are exceptional with different benefits, and we picked the villa, primarily due to it having two beds and baths. It had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The kitchen was amply equipped. We cooked for ourselves most days, and I used the blender everyday so I could have Pina Coladas by the pool. There is air conditioning, but we really only needed it for sleeping. The beds were comfortable, and if there wasn’t so much to do I could have easily slept in. But, there was coffee to drink on the porch with the hummingbirds, mangroves to kayak, a reef to snorkel, lionfish to spear, and so much more. I couldn’t imagine a better place.
We went to town (French Harbour) for groceries at Eldon’s. The selection was ample and prices were better than I expected. The local items and in-season produce were cheap (including beef tenderloin for less than $6/lb), and everything else was reasonable. We got some great local food at the gas station and went to a couple restaurants. The Pina Colada at Lionfish Louie’s (close by) was phenomenal. The Argentinian Grill in West Bay was fabulous.
When I do it again, I’ll get a better base tan before I go and bring some dive clothes as I did get some stings from jellies while spearing lionfish. The stings were like a persistent mosquito, but I’m not sensitive so the pain faded in a few seconds, but wearing a swim shirt and pants (or apparently nylons) would have made it a non-issue. Mosquitoes weren’t a problem. Noseeums were annoying at dawn and dusk, but again I’m not sensitive, so I went without bug spray.
Really, everything thing about the trip was exceptional. Marcia was a gracious host and made sure we had all we needed. I can’t wait to go back!
Incredible Place, Not So Incredible Host
This place is an incredible destination. Every person we called for a tour or a water taxi added to our experience. The porch, the hammock, the coral reefs, the hummingbirds- all more magical that we could have opened. The HOST, however, was really disappointing.
She will tell you, I'm sure, we were "divas". That's how she will defend her rude and demeaning approach to us. But we have traveled to countless places with countless rentals and have always had a great experience and rating as guests.
Marcia was cold and short. Which is fine- everyone is different. But if you have a rental and you have made a life out of hosting guests...you would think you have some sort of gifting or inclination in HOSTING well. Her personality is much more suited for accounting. Or delivering information via bar charts&graphs.
She was so rude that in an email she said"you are way too high maintenance, you need to settle down".This was all in response to us asking for some support/guidance in our first steps after arrival.Who tells a guest to "settle down"?Are we children?
We had to ask her questions all along the way. What's a good price to pay for seafood from boats that try to stop by?How much is a typical water taxi? What would you think is important to see?How do we get to various places? What sort of places could we visit in the same trip?We just asked questions any excited traveler would ask. You had PULL the information from her.
Internet is almost impossible to get working even though you need it to find information out she doesn't volunteer up.
She charges for snorkel gear even though she says everything is included in the price. In the description it says "no hidden charges".
When we arrived, she didn't go down to the house to show us around...she said "I've been down there several times today-I'm not going down now" and handed us the key.
Her dogs will bark at you, scare you & nip you. They did to each one of us. It was scary- even when we closed our doors...you still have to walk on the property. At night, if you walk to the pool-you may be barked at(and terrified)by them.
The pool is full of dog hair-I had to clean it each time. They let them swim there.
Still worth it but she really did impact our enjoyment. We eventually figured it all out for ourselves. She could have been kinder and more gracious for sure.
Hope that helps. We really do not exaggerate or complain. Every rental owner has been amazing except this one. :)
Meg, Will & Joe
Megan, sorry you were unhappy with me as I always "over" communicate with people. In 10+ years of hosting I've never had personal negative comments. We did everything we could to make you feel welcome but you were overbearing from the very beginning.
I think you started out on the wrong foot by having 3 people and only wanting to pay for two. It clearly says on the VRBO listing that its extra for the third person. So you reserved for two and then Joe shows up two days after you arrive with no money to pay for his 6 night stay. He wants me to arrange transport but doesn't tell me until he's on his way. But I scrambled to get him a private driver.
It was late when you arrived and I told you I would be down the next morning to set you up with kayaks and answer questions -- and I was.
I gave you a pre-paid telephone with $6 of time on it, phone list and answered question after question for you. Even before arrival, I responded to dozens of emails with one question on each. I arranged transportation several times, water taxi and allowed you to use my local phone when you didn't buy additional phone cards like I suggested. And this was after I had sent at least 10 attachments of information and had a stack of maps and brochures in the house. You were still at my door every 10 minutes with inane questions that common sense would answer. Many of your questions concerned how much to pay for things that depended upon what was purchased and the weight - - things I couldn't answer. I think Internet was fine, because you continued to ask questions via email all week long. Only one dog goes on the pool steps to cool off so I'm not sure the hair you are talking about is the dogs. Usually the pool filter works good to clean anything floating.
Yes, you were high maintenance and would do better at an all inclusive resort with a private concierge. Most rentals have no one on site...you were fortunate we lived up the hill to help you all week. Let me add that I was told your group was smoking dope by the pool on your last night and our expensive Moen kitchen faucet was broken when you left and needed to be replaced.
Perfect location and Wonderful Host
This was out first trip to Roatan. Turned out, we couldn't of had a better location on the island. Dennis and Marcia were super host, they had every thing ready for us, even the too do's and must see things each day. The location being in a bay off the Ocean made for nice time on the water right out front, and the nice ocean breeze was a plus. The pool made for relaxing really easy. This was our first attempt at vrbo, and we were very pleased. My only regret, not booking 3 weeks there.
Bill, thank you for taking time to write a review. Also we appreciate you staying with us - we know there are many choices on the island. Dennis and I are so happy you got out and about during your stay and enjoyed the water, reef and our new pool. Please come back and visit us again!
Beautiful view, Tranquil and great snorkeling
Dennis and Marcia have a beautiful home with a gorgeous view. They were very helpful whenever we had questions and provided a very accommodating home. It was well stocked and very comfortable. The master bedroom had air conditioning but the 2nd bedroom wasn't working. The beds only had sheets on them with no blankets. I found this odd. But otherwise just gorgeous views and very quiet. This house is away from all the hub bub (as Marcia calls the "touristy" areas). She allows the use of the kayaks to go out to premier spots to snorkel. We snorkeled a few areas and they were amazing. We mostly scuba dived and they referred us to a wonderful dive company Reef House, who picked us up right on their dock! They also have a restaurant that will also pick you up from their dock that is super close which takes you through the famous Mangroves. It's called Hole In The Wall and it has wonderful food. They live off the beaten path and I would advise renting a car so you can explore the island on your own. We rented a car because my husband wouldn't listen to me or Marcia, which was fine. The roads are very bumpy and washed out, just take it slow. If you are not used to this kind of road renting a small suv that sits a little higher would work. We did fine with a car and we drove all over the whole island.
People are wonderful on the island and never once did we feel unsafe. I would sit outside on the deck and drink coffee and just look at the beautiful views. My husband and daughter also enjoyed the new pool they just put in. It is very nice. They do have a very long, steep driveway and lots of steps so just be careful with your luggage as they can be slippery. Her sister was there using her phone so she was using the phone she provides for her guests. We were not able to use it and had to ask every time we needed to make a call. This was the perfect place to stay for beauty, quiet, relaxing, eating seafood, diving and snorkeling. I recommend Dennis and Marcias place if you want to get away from it all and to enjoy the beauty of Roatan. Thanks Marcia!
Thank you very much for your detailed review Tonya. Your review was actually for our villa, property number 380637. We upgraded you to the two bedroom because the boathouse was occupied. Your family was one of the most active guests we've ever had. You really did a great job of getting out seeing the island, diving, kayaking, snorkeling and enjoying the local restaurant fare.
Its great that Hole in the Wall and Reef House were able to pick you up right here at the house. Makes it convenient and less expensive than taking a water taxi.
I wish I had been told you wanted a blanket - I would have given you a few. We don't put them on the beds because we're in the tropics and most people are comfortable with the top sheet with the window and door open this time of year. I can understand though that the air conditioning gets cold. Sorry about that!
Thanks again for your awesome and honest review. We hope you will return to Roatan in the future and enjoy all the island has to offer.
Another great stay with amazing snorkeling
This is the second time we have stayed at Marcia's, and the house was great! Marcia gave us some frozen mangos, which made delicious drinks after snorkeling. The snorkeling was amazing, except for one day when the jellyfish were out by the thousands.... We saw a Moray eel, huge stingray, turtle, lion fish, and lots of beautiful coral and tropical fish. Since it was high season, it was not as peaceful and secluded as our last stay ( tour boats going by and local kids racing their boats in the bay on the weekend), but still a comfortable house and amazing snorkeling! We had a great, restful vacation. It is great to have kayaks provided so we can snorkel at our leisure, and we were also able to borrow a spear and fishing pole and even fins, since I lost one od mine our first week in Roatan. Thanks for your great hospitality!
Beautiful Roatan Island. Scuba Dive, Snorkel, kayak, Exploring, Dock & Deep Sea Fishing, Eco-Tours, Groceries, Shelling & Beachcombing, Dolphin Encounter, Garifuna Village, A local fishing guide, dive shop or water taxi can pick you up at your own dock for day trips, Trips to neighboring islands & tourist activities can be arranged by the on-site owner
Eighteen years ago my husband Dennis and I longed for some adventure in our lives. So, we ditched our corporate jobs, sold our Florida home and jammed our 'stuff' into a rented storage garage. We took off in our 42-foot boat from St. Petersburg, Florida for our Roatan property. It was total woods when we arrived - we didn't even have electric or water. Since then, we built a house on the Caribbean Sea overlooking the world's second largest reef. We had been diving all over the Caribbean and could have moved anywhere in the world. However, we selected Roatan and specifically our area for its unmatched beauty. Here you will have the beauty of a tropical island and peacefulness of a private retreat. We're waiting for you!
Why MARCIA chose Caribe Point
Caribe Pointe Bight is the most beautiful place in Roatan. Its location is off the beaten path and away from the tourists and cruise ships. The lush tropical natural surroundings are highlighted by palms, towering oaks, crystal clear Caribbean water, mountains and the world's second largest barrier reef.
What makes this House unique
Diving, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing are right here at your fingertips. The location is quiet and relaxing where you can do as much as you like, or as little as you want. My new boat is at the property and available for local trips and snorkeling excursions, restaurant visits, etc.
