Riventides sits atop peaceful Navarro Ridge overlooking the mouth of the Navarro River where it flows into the Pacific. The house has extended river and ocean views as well as a panoramic view of the forested ridges on both sides of the Navarro. We recently bought this dramatic yet serene dwelling with its two acres of land. We were enchanted by its views and its unusual combination of classical, creative, and rustic features. They all come together in what one friend characterized as “a rustic palace.”
The house is set back from the road by a long driveway with an adjacent grassy meadow. At the end of the drive, open a small gate and step into a delightful park-like courtyard reminiscent of those found in European country houses, complete with fountain. Enter the long foyer of the house and walk back to the living room, with its soaring cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace, and vaulted windows that beautifully showcase the ridge on the far side of the river. A balcony overlooks the living room from the second floor. To the right is the extended kitchen-dining area with river and ocean views, a high slanted roof, and a row of doors that open to the long covered back porch and generous backyard.
A number of vintage treasures have been incorporated into the house. The broad-board pine floors in the living and dining room hail from an old Singer sewing machine factory, the marble island counter top in the kitchen from the Berkeley Public Library, and the double doors at the front entrance are from a former Fort Bragg mercantile store. These harmonize well with the more contemporary elements, such as the industrial-style metal kitchen countertops and the stainless appliances.
The first floor has a large master bedroom suite with a huge spa/tub, enclosed tile shower, and an adjacent outdoor hot tub. There is also an ample guest room with attached bath. The second floor bedroom can sleep up to four with its bunk bed (lower double/upper single) and additional single bed. The second floor bathroom has an unusual tub/shower that is likely to delight.
Situated in Albion, Riventides is near many fine restaurants and only 8 miles from the town of Mendocino and its shops. Because it is very close to the junction of CA Route 128 and CA Highway 1, it also provides a wonderful base for experiencing the riveting beauty and other attractions all up and down the North Coast. We named the property “Riventides,” inspired by Tolkien’s “Rivendell,” a place of beauty, comfort and rejuvenation for Hobbits and Elves. We hope that with its open views of river, sea, ridges, and sky, its comfort, and its peaceful yet energizing ambiance, Riventides will serve a similar purpose for our guests!
We are lucky to have a very helpful but unintruisve caretaker for the property who lives in an apartment over the detached garage.
Our basic charge covers 6 guests. We charge an additional $50/nite for guests 7 and 8.

Lois was great to work with & the house is beautiful, cozy & in a nice location overlooking the ocean. Spectacular view of the sunset. The place has exactly the vibe we were looking for in a Mendocino weekend. Great house for two families.
Our stay at Riventides in Albion was extremely enjoyable. The kitchen was very well appointed, the house was clean, comfortable and full of character and charm. The view was fantastic! The on site manager was friendly and at the same time respectful of our privacy. We also loved that it was dog friendly so we were able to bring our fur baby. We will definitely return!
Hello! Another great stay at this lovely home. Our fourth visit I believe. Mendo county is my family’s happy place to begin with and we’re never disappointed here. Spent thanksgiving there last year. Was excellent! Communication was great. The air the weather the view. Clear night skies. All superb. No complaints!!! I’m sure we will be back. Thanks so much!!!!!
The property was perfect for a family. It is tucked away on a beautiful spot with a gorgeous view of the river below. Family and pet friendly too. Has a well stocked kitchen with plenty of pots, pans, dinnerware, spices, etc. we would definitely stay here again!
We had a lovely time amidst the alternatingly beautiful fog and sun. The house was extremely cozy, clean, and comfortable with a perfectly outfitted kitchen (we cooked a lot). The coastal road (Route 1) was close so exploring Mendo & Fort Bragg areas as well as the myriad of trails was incredibly easy. There were 6 of us and with the several bathrooms, we never felt that we were on top of each other. Well worth it.
Wonderful home! Lots of room to spread out, open, lots of natural light. Well stocked kitchen. Would stay at Riventides again if we ever go back to the Mendocino coast. Highly recommend this place!
Our second stay in this lovely home was great. House is charming, warm, and outfitted with every amenity you would like. Very comfortable for our group of five not-so-young adults.
We had a wonderful four day getaway at a beautiful location and property! Everything about our stay was excellent, from the home itself to our communications with the homeowner and on-site property manager. We will definitely return!!

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness
The overall cleanliness of the home was lacking and the hot tub was dirty and we were unable to use it. The furnishings are shabby and there was expired food in the pantry. There were things left behind in drawers and on shelves.

DUE TO A SNAFU: our usually excellent housekeeper did not arrive until close to the time the time guests were arriving. Our caretaker did his best to clean the house, but this is not his skill. Guest knew this was a one-off situation and early in their visit asked me to refund their cleaning fee, which I immediately did. Please see our many other excellent reviews.
Our second stay at this lovely home. Made Turkey Day extra special. We love the area and it didn’t disappoint. Comfortable home and no complaints. Beautiful view of course. Mendo County always smells so good too!!!! Thanks!!!!!
Anyone looking for a beautiful private house that is well maintained, clean, a fully stocked kitchen and the most peaceful porch views, you have found your place here.
We can't wait to go back!

The photos don’t do it justice. This spacious family home is well-equipped and spotless. You could spend hours on the porch enjoying the view and absolute silence. It is a remarkable rental and provided a perfect location for exploring the Mendocino area.
The house has so much character. Plenty of space. Wonderful to sit on the deck and enjoy the view of the river, ocean and country side. Quiet. Close to hiking trails, restaurants, wine tasting. Was perfect for our family. Well stocked. Caretaker welcoming and helpful.
My husband and I (along with our pooch) recently stayed at Riventides. We found the property in excellent condition, lots of amenities, nice large rooms and a quiet location. Close to Albion, Little River and Mendocino. The property owner was terrific to deal with--very prompt and informative We especially enjoyed our dinners at The Ledford House (Albion) and Luna Trattoria in Mendocino. The lunches at Cafe Beaujolais were fun.
If you were looking for a quiet, gorgeous, and comfortable home, this is the house. In the Mendocino area, close to wineries and the wonderful coast, the house itself sits on a ridge with a stunning view. The kitchen is equipped to cook anything, there is a wonderful Private, hot tub, Games and DVDs for entertainment. Natural light is everywhere. Communication was wonderful with the owner and there is a kind and friendly on-site manager. Agree with previous comments, he is both completely available and unbelievably unintrusive! Our family of three generations was very comfortable here and we look forward to coming back again.
We had a great time. Very spacious house with a large fenced yard our dogs adored. Our family of four had plenty of room to read, enjoy the hot tub or just sit and watch the view. The kitchen was well equipped with coffee maker, coffee, spices, etc… Although we didn’t use them, there are tons of books, movies, games and puzzles. The caretaker was super friendly and greeted us coming in and said goodbye on the way out. Otherwise we didn’t see or hear him. Overall, so nice and relaxing. We would definitely come back! The dogs give it two paws up.
Our recent stay at Riventides was wonderful! The home was warm and inviting, the property was large and private and the view off the back patio is breathtaking. The neighborhood is very quiet and it's a great location to reflect and recharge. You are far enough away from towns and people that you can enjoy privacy, yet close enough that you can grab groceries and enjoy a beach on a warm summer day. It's also just a short drive to Mendocino and Fort Bragg.
At the time of writing this, the property is dog friendly, and our 80lb furry child thoroughly enjoyed running on the park-like stretch of lawn to chase her ball every morning and evening. The spa was clean and toasty, also very private off the master bedroom and the shower was piping hot with great pressure. The kitchen had everything we needed with a great butler pantry to store all our groceries. The on-site manager who stays in the living space above the detached garage was really great too, just there if/when you need him for anything otherwise he is very quiet and seemingly invisible during your stay. He has a phone number for questions and texts back quickly. Overall this location gets very high marks. We had a great stay and hope we can book again someday soon.
The house, yard, and view were even more beautiful than in the photos. It was immaculate, comfortable, spacious, and extremely well-appointed. The beds & bedding felt luxurious, the kitchen was wonderful to cook in, and it hit the right balance between pristine and homey (in the best way). There were so many thoughtful details (e.g. the labeling in the kitchen, the info in the binder, etc) that made our stay smooth, and the house had wonderful artistic/decorating touches that gave it real charm and originality.
Surisingly to me, one of the very best features of this place is the caretaker Xeno. He managed the impossible task of being completely unobtrusive and almost invisible, yet being simultaneously welcoming and helpful if/when needed. He is also very kind! And clearly he works hard and with great care to keep the house and gardens in lovely condition and ensure a pleasant stay for guests.
The location in Albion seems remote, quiet, and private, but with Mendocino 12 minutes away and Fort Bragg only 25, everything is at your fingertips. Be sure to have dinner at the Ledford House which is only five minutes away.
My two dogs also loved the property. I did find that there were a lot of ticks, but that was true this year of everywhere we went in the area, and is part of a natural landscape, a wet winter, and abundant wildlife. I only mention it so that you plan to put your dogs on a tick preventative treatment.
Wonderful property, actually worth the price!
We really enjoyed our stay at this amazing house. Kitchen has everything you need for cooking and baking, the table is large enough for a big family gathering, and the view is gorgeous! The manager was very responsive and attentive. I highly recommend this place, it was a treat for us to stay at this beautiful, very well maintained house. Thank you for your hospitality!

Why they chose this property
I have always loved the Mendocino Area. This house that is in many ways is reminicent of Cape Cod or Nantucket houses brings together my New England roots with my love of the North Coast of California.
What makes this property unique
There is a wonderful sense of peacefulness that can be experienced at Riventides. Yet the house and the property also have a very dramatic quality. The magic of the place is that it brings the two together
