About this property

50' from the Mississippi River, see the winter eagle migration, fish from there

Spectacular 180 degree view of the Mighty Mississippi! Enjoy sipping a cup of coffee from the deck or in the kitchen nook watching the river meander by. Quiet neighborhood, located in between Ft. Madison and Keokuk. Historic Navoo, Illinois is just 1.5 mi. across the river or 20 minutes away by car along a beautiful scenic route!! Awesome place to relax, refresh and enjoy the beauty of the river valley.
Fishing poles are available to wet a line and see what the river may give up for your next dinner.
One thing very interesting to do is watching the barges lock through at Keokuk.
No matter what time of year there is always natures beauty around.. Spring brings migrating waterfowl going north, sometimes there will be many hundreds of thousands of Snow geese. Summer still waterfowl but with babies, the Purple Martins are around. Fall-migrating waterfowl going south with the colors of the changing trees. Winter-when the river freezes eagles will ride ice flows down the main channel and there are usually hundreds of eagles below the locks and dams.
We have 3 kayaks, inner tubes, and a12' john boat. Life preservers

This was a great property for us to use as "base camp" during Geode Fest. Lots of room, nice views, and a perfect restful retreat!

It was Great!

Traveling on the road for work is hard. But staying in a Home Away makes us feel more at home then staying in a hotel. We had a good time and we felt comfortable. We would stay here again.

Great place

House was just as listed and very clean. We had everything we needed. We had a snow storm while there and really appreciated the walk and driveway were cleared for us. The storm also caused us to stay in more than planned but we didn't mind. The views and watching all the different type of birds was spectacular. The hosts provide so many brochures on what to do in the area. We hope to stay here again.

Great location and great view!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The house was warm when we arrived but the A/C worked great and cooled things down very well. The owners were really great to work with. There was a problem with the main shower so we were unable to use it at first but while we were out sightseeing they got it taken care of and we didn't have any problems with it at all. The house could use some updates but we would recommend it to anyone!

Relaxing time along the river.

Our group of four stayed September 22-25 of 2016. We thought the home had a large amount of room. I enjoyed the privacy of being downstairs, while the others spent their time upstairs. We especially enjoyed our morning and evenings on the patio/deck. The view of the river, along with various birds you see, was very relaxing. Being close to the city, while still enjoying the outdoors was great. Look forward to a trip in the area, with this home as our stay, in the coming years.

Very nice and peaceful with a beautiful view of the river

The house was great for our short weekend getaway. It had everything we needed to cook out and just relax. We loved the fact the house was on a dead end street because our son was able to ride his bike around with worrying about traffic. This was our first time using VRBO I wasn’t crazy about all the fees associated with it. The $75 cleaning fee was a lot for 3 adults and 1 child. Otherwise, it was a great experience.

Our wonderful stay 50 ft. from the mighty Mississippi

We had a great time observing tugs, barges, and fishermen. We saw numerous wildlife including, diving pelicans , seagulls after fish, snow geese, and possibly a muskrat swimming. We enjoyed watching a family of 4 rabbits playing, and also the oddest thing - a little duck floating around dunking under for it's food every few minutes, but always by itself with no other ducks around and never seeming to go ashore. Rich was quick to respond to any questions we had and also offered several suggestions of places to eat or sights to visit. The house had everything we needed and is a comfortable place for families to relax. What an incredible view of the Mississippi River! Overall a quiet, relaxing and wonderful example of God's handiwork. Be sure to check out the telescope!

Needs some TLC

Charming quiet neighborhood for our stay and was just the right size for 6 adults. However, needs some attention on the cleaning. We had mouse droppings in one of the bedrooms and all the bedrooms needed vacuuming. All the window A/C units needed to be sealed. We had wasp getting into the bedrooms from the unsealed areas and bugs at night. Tried using packing tape to seal up the holes. Needed to wash the bedding before using. This could be a very charming place. Beautiful location right on the river and plenty of wildlife to see in the river and flying around. Even with the issues we had a wonderful time with friends sightseeing and playing games.

Not what was advertised

If you are wanting a place that is convenient and close to Nauvoo this is not the place for you. Though on Google maps it says the Nauvoo temple is about 2.2 miles away that is only if you can go directly across the Mississippi. Which you can’t. It’s a 35 minute drive. There’s no central air so the bathroom was disgustingly hot all the time and it took about 15 mins for the rooms to cool which isn’t ideal when you have kids you want to get in bed quickly. Also it’s a good 10-15 mins from the closest town. Would not stay again or recommend.

Some pluses some negatives

When I first arrived only one ac unit was installed. It was 88 degrees in the house so I made sure with the owner that I could put them in. So that wasn't great. The house wasn't dirty but it was dusty (like it had been cleaned a few weeks ago). The view and location are great. The furniture is comfortable. I booked for two weeks, at one point the owner called me after 9pm to let me know windows were being installed the next day. At 8am the handyman showed up, he asked me if I was alone, which is an inappropriate question. Also the handyman left a mess, that I did not clean up. The windows also took two days, so it seemed rude to do that while a paying guest was staying. I have never had these types of issues before. The owners seem very nice, I just prefer a private experience when I book houses.

Unique Bassmasters Review

Does anyone clean this house? This house was not clean when i got there! When we arrived the house smells like mildew. The garbage can had trash in it. When we went to put food in the fridge. There was a fridge full of bottle and jar condiments, butter, eggs . Some of which is expired. Same with the freezer, the frozen pizza is expired. Also there was pizza crust setup or big tortilla shells left in the oven! All the beds were made except for the backroom with the ac. There was no sheets or pillows. When we went looking for them, we found the sheets in the wash still. And smells horrible. And next to the wash was a basket full of towels. In which we ran out of. Other than those complaints. The house was great. We all had a great time. Parking was perfect for us. And the house had everything we needed for 6 men. I would absolutely rent this house again provided someone was up keeping the house. Thanks again Unique Bassmasters

Mold and Mice

The backyard view of the Mississippi is beautiful but the stench of mold and mice was so overpowering that we had to leave after one night. Our clothes and pillows smelled like mold and mice feces and urine after one night there. A wastebasket under the bathroom sink was overflowing with water from a leak that we had to empty every four hours to prevent it from overflowing again. The manager did nothing to compensate or remedy the situation...He just wanted to know if we emptied the traps with a couple dead mice we found in the basement. The mayflies were swarming, which is typical this time of year, but the duct tape around the cooler in the bedroom window did little to keep out the bugs. They were a couple beds short...The setup isn’t like what you see in the pictures on Vrbo. We spent the first hour there cleaning up from the people before us (pee on both toilets, food splatted in the fridge, etc). We could have dealt with everything else, but the smell was just too much.

Bugs, no response, still waiting for refund

Our family rented this home for four nights but checked out after one. We have rented numerous homes over the years and don’t expect fancy accommodations. We were willing to disregard the strong mildew smell filling the house from the basement, lack of general maintenance and very old furnishings, but when flying bugs literally filled the bedrooms due to improperly sealed window air conditioners, we called VRBO and indicated we would be checking out. We’ve stayed next to the river dozens of times because we have family nearby so we’re familiar with river flies and such, but the bugs where we previously stayed remained outdoors. We called VRBO and they attempted to reach the homeowner on our behalf that first night without response. We left the home in the morning following all check-out instructions and we wrote a respectful note to the homeowner explaining the situation and noting we expected a refund for remaining days. We called VRBO to let them know we checked out, and they again attempted unsuccessfully to reach the homeowner. Both agents looked at the photos we sent and agreed they wouldn’t want to sleep under such conditions. Not until after the date we were supposed to check out did the homeowner respond sarcastically. We’ve been nothing but respectful and gave enough notice for the homeowner to remedy the situation. It is now two weeks later and we’re still fighting to get a refund.

Fantastic peaceful getaway for 8!

Tho house was perfect for our family as half of us came in from Chicago and the other half came in from Spencer Iowa, so this was right in the middle. The house was a little warm when we arrived but it did cool off once we turned on the AC. The living room doesn't cool off as well as the bedrooms do but it felt better than being outside as it was the hottest day of the year. There is Wi-Fi and cable in the house and most of the bedrooms have TV's which is nice to relax after being on the hot sun all day. The backyard is big and the views of the river are so tranquil, you can sit out there and look at it for hours which is what we did. The river is not very deep at all and the kids had fun splashing around in the water. It was a little difficult getting the canoe and kayaks in the water, because there is no dock and you have to climb down a bank of rocks, but we figured it out. There is a dollar general two minutes away by car and it was super convenient to grab anything we needed. We bought a bunch of firewood and had bonfires both nights when we were there. Rich was very attentive and was more than happy to offer suggestions on things to do in the area and getting into the house upon arrival. Even with all of his suggestions, we never took advantage of leaving the house as we were having such a great time! Only complaint about the trip was the flies. They were relentless and hang out in hoards right by the patio door and as soon as you open it they swarm in. We tried our best to flyswat as many as we could but they definitely got the best of us. I don't know if there is anything that can be done for this but just a heads up. Otherwise it was a fantastic weekend getaway and if I am ever looking for a house again in southeast Iowa I will gladly come back!

No communication from owner

I sent mail through the VRBO website and sent a text. The only reply from the owner said they couldn't communicate unless I booked through VRBO. This made no sense since I informed him I was staying at the house and also communicated through VRBO. Not very clean and owner said he might knock something off the cleaning charge if we washed, and dried the laundry and remade the beds and put away the towels. that is not what his information sheet in the house said and we didn't have time for that. Do they have a cleaning service?

Beautiful view , nice host

Property needs cleaning up. A lot of old shingles, wood , tin laying around. Landscaping has fallen into disarray. Deck still seems stable but looks really bad. Needs fixing. Duck tape around air conditioner units inside. Unfortunately let a lot of bugs in at night. We retapped them. Air worked good though. Beds were very comfortable. Plenty of extra blankets. Shower and bathroom was good too. Great handicapped shower. Doesn’t sleep as many as listed. Comfortabley I’d say 7. Bunk beds in basement. No mattresses and junk on them. Stored in basement. Washer and dryer are good. Kitchen well stocked and appliances worked great. Dining table ready to fall apart but stayed together long enough for us to use. The location and the view is the best ! The host is really nice too and answers your calls. I’d give it a 3.5 out if 5.

About the host

Hosted by rich and micki naughton

Host profile image
Richard and Michelle Naughton live in Marshalltown IA. Retired after operating ServiceMaster of Marshalltown Inc. for 30 yrs. Our son and his wife still work the business.

Why they chose this property

We feel blessed to have found this property. What an awesome place to be able to use and share with others. We never thought that sitting on a deck doing nothing but watching the river flow by and seeing all the wildlife that comes with it, i.e., Eagles, pelicans, seagulls, geese, etc. could be so intriguing and relaxing.

What makes this property unique

We love the fact that the river is only 50' away. It is unusual to find a place on the river that doesn't have either railroad tracks or a road between the house and the river. It is a quiet well kept neighborhood, friendly neighbors and close to larger cities if needed. Sitting on the deck whether it be day or night, watching the wildlife or the reflection of the Navoo temple on the river or a view of the stars!!!
Eagles pass by frequently, in the winter when the river is frozen there can be hundreds of eagles below the lock and dam at Keokuk and Burlington.
