Why Richard Trombley chose Chestnut Hills
We like to be able to walk to dinner, the grocery, and around the neighborhood. We hardly ever use the car once we get to Asheville.
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with the high ceilings, the beautiful updated kitchen, open floor plan, and the walking proximity to everything we like to do in Asheville.

Cute historic cottage, walk to everything
The perfect location for an extended stay in the heart of Asheville, tucked away in a historic neighborhood walking distance to downtown and several neighborhood restaurants, wine shops, grocery stores, everything you need is right there. The yard is very small and the houses are close, typical of older downtown neighborhoods. I really enjoyed walking my dogs through the surrounding neighborhoods of grand historic homes. The cottage is comfortable, well equipped and the owner's very responsive quickly fixing a minor issue that came up. I would defintely stay again!
Left early, couldn’t stand the place...
When I arrived for my two month stay, the house was so full of the owners things that there was literally no room for my belongings. After stuffing many (at least 8) bags full of things the owners son came (not promptly)and picked the bags up. When my daughter looked at the house for me she said the owner promised that “all this stuff will be cleaned up of course”.... also upon arrival the toilet water was an odd shade of yellow, and ALL the water seemed bad. Apparently there was some sort of issue with the city water in this neighborhood so we didn’t drink the water the entire stay. No one spoke to us about the water- not the owner or owner’s son.
The house is overrun by little ants. I was constantly cleaning with vinegar to try to get rid of them. We couldn’t leave any food out for 5 minutes before ants attacked.. there were no hangers, the mattress was ridiculous... we had to buy a mattress topper to get any sleep at all... there seems to be spiders everywhere. Black mold kept creeping through the grout in the shower... NO ONE contacted us at all the entire time we were there to see how things were going. ..nobody came to mow or take care of the lawn area the entire time we were there...close to two months, spring in Asheville...we were having to step over thistles to enter from the alleyway.... and it is an alley... houses back up to it and ALL the garbage can and recycle bins are lined up all along the alley.... and in fact the front yard view is of garbage cans. It seemed somehow, perfect.
Future renters please see previous reviews for the opinion of average VRBO customers. We are responsible, involved owners who live in the house ourselves for several months per year.
Great Stay in Asheville
This cottage was perfect for a one month stay in Asheville. There was plenty of space to spread out for two and the home was extremely comfortable. Walkable to downtown, and a very short walk to multiple coffee shops, restaurants and grocery stores. The small yard and patio were perfect for the warmer days and our dog loved being able to get out and roam a bit. The home was also a great base to get out and explore all of the surrounding mountains and forests. Would highly recommend!
Cozy, comfortable and quiet.
The property had everything we needed, especially a washer and dryer for an extended stay. Many small amenities were available for our use. We did replace what was reasonable. The cottage was very convenient for traveling around the area. Main roads were easily accessible. Trash pickup was regular and our dog enjoyed the front porch. Hope to return in the future.
Charming, historical, peaceful, location, great management...you cannot go wrong staying here
We had a lovely stay at Butterscotch Cottage. Everything worked out perfectly. The cottage is charming, spotless, plenty of cookware in the kitchen. There is a very peaceful feeling surrounding the entire property.
As one visitor wrote in the guestbook before me it is very conducive to yoga. I had lovely meditations to the music the Trombleys had chosen. We especially enjoyed the sounds of title songs from motion pictures and television that can be found on their cable selections. The porch is fun to daydream, read, eat, sip and watch people walking or jogging by. Everyone is nice and friendly including Richard (the owner). Mark (Richard's son) was just the greatest. He was so personable and easy to contact with questions. He even brought his lovely daughter Laurel to visit. They all welcomed us with the beautiful spirit of the people of Asheville. We had complete privacy which we greatly appreciated. We were in a very good location. Grocery stores with an abundance of delicious organic produce and healthy choices. Everything was close by including downtown and the Botanical Gardens. We were there writing music so we were very comfortable and content just being in the beautiful atmosphere of Butterscotch Cottage with it's remarkable history lovingly kept in place. Everything about our stay was magical. It was a step back to a place and time that was so very rich in culture and architecture. We will remember this as an important event in our book of memories thanks to the Trombleys, all of them. Thank you. We would not hesitate to revisit such a special place.

Hillside Park neighborhood is a 15-minute walk to the heart of downtown. An eclectic collection of southern mansions converted to B&Bs, arts and crafts bungalows with bright colors and decorations, and family homes with vegetable and flower gardens.
