About this property

Unique Boutique: cosywarm, sleeps 6, sauna, rural, inglenook fireplace

An awarded Airbnb Superhost and with Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, Number Eleven is possibly the only 170 year old labourer’s cottage with an outdoor sauna! Located in the quintessential village of Great Gransden, the cottage provides a luxurious base with which to explore Cambridgeshire and the East of England. Number Eleven also makes an ideal base for visiting academics or parents to Cambridge University that don’t wish to be in the middle of town.

We want to ensure that you have the best possible stay here. Number Eleven is run by Andy next door. It’s my job, not a hobby or an investment so I want to do it properly. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I try to be as ecologically minded as I can be and make Number Eleven as interesting and comfortable as possible.

Number Eleven is different. You probably only need to remember your PJs and toothbrush! Pamper yourself with locally made natural soap, a Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom. Or relax in the sauna........

Have a look at the design collections through the decades in the cottage, and revel in the analogue world of the mix tape! For all 80's audio boffs, there's a Pioneer amp and speakers, and Technics cassette deck for use. Go, on dig out your mix tapes and bring them with you. Your phone doesn't care about you and your iPod's dying. (Plug in aux facilities for your phone are available.....)

Downstairs is a cosy living room with an inglenook fireplace almost the depth of the house and nearly the height of the room! A fire pack is ready to go upon arrival, and logs/coal can then be purchased separately from local shops for the remainder of your stay. The whole house is also heated by Fischer Future Heat radiators. A 43" TV in the lounge also streams the web with access to your Netflix account.

The kitchen is custom fitted with a ceramic hob and bright red resin worktops. Fridge/washing machine, iron/board are all included. Drying facilities are available if required. Filtered water on tap. Bespoke hand made crockery is from the Isle of Skye made by Edinbane Pottery; ask us about how it came to be.

Both bedrooms have double beds with high count quality bedding, storage, hanging facilities, bedside lights, chairs, DVD players, radios with aux facilities, charging cables and make up/shaving mirrors.

The bathroom has a powerful digital shower, bath, sink, toilet and a bar of naturally locally made soap. High quality shampoo and moisturisers are also provided along with cotton wool pads and buds (not plastic!).

Babies and children are well catered for with cot, changing mat, bath, stool, toys and games galore.

Please note that guests 5 and 6 will be accommodated on a comfortable sofa-bed in the lounge. There is a £20 charge for this to cover extra laundry costs and it must be booked prior to arrival. The amount will be requested from you once you have booked and paid, online or on arrival.

Dogs are welcome with prior notice given at the time of booking; throws, towels and bowls are provided in the Pooch Pouffe in the lounge. Please keep them off the furniture (who chose that sofa?). If Fido's not 100% happy with this arrangement, please use the throws provided in the Pooch Pouffe!

Your environment, our ethos:
• The milk is sold by Bal at Gransden Stores around the corner.
• Soap is by St Neots Natural Soap Company, 6 miles away.
• The logs for the fire are responsibly sourced within the village where possible.
• Toiletries are not disposable travel sized items and are refilled after use.
• Almost all the cleaning products, detergent and washing up liquid I use and supply are bio-degradable.
• All bin bags are bio-degradable; directions for recycling (all packaging is recycled in Huntingdonshire) and food waste are clear.
• Electricity is provided by Octopus and is from 100% renewable sources.
• When the sun’s out, the sauna is solar powered!

There is parking for one car on the drive. If you can't fit on or you arrive in more than one car, please park in the Reading Rooms car park round the corner. There is a code provided as it is locked at night. Please do not park in front of the cottage, on Eltisley Road, West Street or Fox Street.

Car Charging facilities are available but please inform in advance as the point is next door on our drive.

Cosy and quaint
The owners have put a lot of thought into furnishing the property so that it is comfortable yet retains a lot of the original period features. It is particularly suitable for families but couples are also catered for. The local shop is an absolute gem and carries a huge range of stock. The only suggestion for improvement is that a clothes dryer would be handy, particularly is wet weather.

Well located, clean and comfortable, friendly host. Suitable for travellers with limited luggage.
We had a comfortable stay at Andy’s place. We are Australians on a 5 week driving tour on England. We come with corresponding amount of luggage. We decided not to carry our suitcases up the steep narrow stairway, because we considered to bring them down was too perilous. We kept cases in living room which impacted on space, Suggestion for Andy is to position food scrap bin outside the kitchen. It appears flies attracted by the bin enter the house via chimney.

We had a fantastic stay at Andy’s lovely cottage. Everything we needed was at the house. Great place
A super character cottage with all the facilities required. Great village pub and post office for the daily essentials. Good pubs in nearby villages with good food. Fantastic host who was helpful when needed but not intrusive and gave us our privacy. We would definitely recommend this lovely property.

Beautiful house and gardens
Stayed for two nights, and chose this place for its proximity to Cambridge. The house retains its old charm but has tastefully renovated. Well equipped kitchen to cook our own meals, particularly liked the outdoor table and garden to enjoy the afternoon sunshine. Would stay again and definitely recommend for anyone else. Andy was helpful and friendly.

Lovely English Countryside Cottage
Equipped with fun decor and an attentive host, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the English countryside. Friendly people at the local pub, great walks in and around the country, and accessible to Cambridge. Will go again!

About the host

Hosted by Andy

Host profile image
My name is Andy Greaves. I ran a B&B and Self Catering business on the Isle of Skye 10 years ago before moving to Cambridgeshire to bring up a family and be nearer friends and family.

Been around a bit! I grew up in Bolton, Lancashire, went to design college in Sunderland and music college in Leeds, worked as a teacher in Kent, Surrey, Skye, Peterborough, Sandy and now at the village primary school in Great Gransden! It really is a great place to live.

Why they chose this property

Hopefully I have the balance between luxury, (toiletries, food, furnishings, design) historical details and value just right. I appreciate that you've travelled a while to get here, so the welcome is warm and personal. I available if you need me, and not if you don't! The cottage has character, as does Great Gransden dating back to Anglo Saxon times. Come and find out for yourself.

What makes this property unique

Suntrap back garden. Beams. Fireplace. Apple tree out front. Pub at the end of the road. Shop across the road. Gransden is a quiet, quintessential English village on the border of Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Cambridge is 15-20 minutes away, London 1 hour by train. Thatch and trees abound. No through route. Pub, shop and Post Office (cash withdrawl facilities), school, church, good community spirit. Excellent dog/human walking in the countryside and great access to National Trust/English Heritage properties such as Wimpole and Audley End, and also Duxford Imperial War Museum all nearby.
