The house is built right next to the sea. It is ideal for family vacations. The beautiful beach that lies a few meters away from the house offers clear and crystal waters. The uniqueness of the nature and the feeling of isolation you are going to feel during your staying on Ai-Giannis will totally fulfill you.
A small guide on your access to the property:
The area is accessible only by car. (There is no public transport).
The distance from Heraklion to the property is about 70 km.
You will first go through 63 km (about 1 hour) of road made of asphalt. You will reach the Asterousia sierra in about 53km. You will arrive to Loukia village which is on the foot of the mountain.
You will then drive for about 8 km to Kapetaniana village. The road network is in good condition (the road is also made of asphalt) . There are plenty of curves climbing up the mountain but there are plenty of metal protective barriers through out the route. The average driving speed is about 30-40 km/h.
You will come across Kapetaniana village right on top of the mountain. That is where the dirt road starts. The next 3 km are fairly demanding. You will be driving on the top of the sierra. The road is wide enough, there are plenty of open-easy turns. The road is quite bumpy due to the peak of some stones that stick out of the ground.
The last 4 km are on a quite bumpy and curvy dirty road. You are going to drive down from the top of a mountain to the beach (you will have to move carefully with an average speed of 20-30km/hour). That's actually the most difficult part of the route.
I would strongly recommend on renting an 4X4 or an SUV but you can also access the property with a smaller vehicle (as long as you drive carefully the last 4 km of the route.
Most of the visitors drive to Ai-Giannis using small and low frame vehicles without experiencing any problem. A larger car can definitely make your trip more comfortable. It is more like placebo because in conclusion it is all about the driver’s experience.
I can send you a ton-page guide to your email. You can find plenty of photos and details about how to access the property.
Wifi connection:
Since there is no internet infrastructure on the area a data sim card can be provided during your stay.
(You can buy extra data online in case you run out of data using a prepaid/debit/credit card in case )
You can access the internet through a sim pocket wifi connecting up to 10 devices (smartphones, laptops)
Cellular network
I would like to inform you that the only available network provider around Ai-Giannis area is Cosmote.
That is one of the reasons why i decided to provide you a cell phone equipped with a Cosmote sim card. You can use it in order to talk with me and any other Greek phone numbers for free.
Trips
The house is an excellent starting point to explore the nearby monasteries, the Minoan harbour and the "unknown beauty" of authentic Crete.
The famous beach of Matala lies 50 km away. A mini market is located 300 meters away from the house. You can find plenty of things such as milk, cheese, biscuits, vegetables, fruits
Kapetaniana village is located 8 km north providing mini markets and taverns.
There is only one way connecting Ai Giannis to North Crete (you have to go back the same road). It will take you 4 hours to get to Chania and 3 hours to get to Ierapetra.
Most of the visitors want to visit the village in order to spent some time on a unique atmosphere like the one provided by the uniqueness of the nature.
Plenty of them, are determined and willing to explore the south part of Crete setting Ai-Giannis as there base.
I tried to be as analytical as possible because I want you to be well prepared for your vacations.
