About the host
Hosted by Mark Bry
In the Uk we ran music stores, selling CDs and musical instruments. In the 80s & 90s the music business was vibrant, fast moving and fun. Later in life we worked in social care. With our savings we decided to embark on a new, exciting adventure in Portugal.Lerryn and I moved to the beautiful central region of Portugal in 2015.
We began renovating an old farm ,completing Casa Lerryn in 2016.The Portuguese life is slow, friendly and embraces fresh food, excellent wine and wonderful, welcoming locals. We love the wild birds living in our valley, they have thrived since we created a perfect environment in and around our meadow.
Having so many historical places of interest, river beaches , pine covered rolling hills and affordable living offers us and our guests so much. Medieval towns and cities including Tomar, Coimbra, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu, and Castelo Branco each have their own individual characteristics. There is always something unexpected to discover. Our smaller towns cater to summer visitors using themes linked to their history and specialities. We found the Festa dos Tabuleiros in Tomar an amazing event full of colour and artistic skills. Their medieval festival showcases horsemanship, music and plain good fun ! Coimbra university gardens include ancient trees and tropical plants, originally used for medicinal science but now lovingly maintained in stunning formal gardens. Coimbras university city caters to all ages, offering trendy eateries and eclectic shops. The Jardim Do Paco Episcopal gardens in Castelo Branco with their mazes ,tiles and ancient statues guarantee great photo shots. We always enjoy our visits to Aveiro and our guests have too! The town celebrates its art deco architecture and proud history of fishing. The canal boat rides are fun, and even better, finding atmospheric fish restaurants by the waters edge. Our guests have made the worthwhile trip to the Atlantic coast on many occasions, they love surfing, quiet beaches and nature at its best.

Why they chose this property
Sertá is an undiscovered region, offering a retreat from the hustle and bustle of busy lives.
We fell in love with Sertá because the pace of life is slow, but enriched with a passion for good food, wine, and friendly people.
The town is picturesque, the large river dominates the centre of town and pine covered rolling hills surround Serta.
We have some of the best restaurants in the area and Serta has a famous dish, Maranho & Bucho, which is celebrated throughout the country.
Some guests want to do nothing more than to lay by the pool, light the BBQ and enjoy the local hospitality, its so easy to wind down here!
But ..adventuring out and about is easy. Casa Lerryn has proved to be an ideal base to discover the region, as we are centrally located. Its easy to reach Tomar, Coimbra and other places of interest.
Clear nights are amazing, thousands of stars are clearly visible due to lack of light pollution. Guests use phone apps to trace planets and stars, and watch the space station pass over.
Rejuvenate and unwind. Casa Lerryn feels miles away from anywhere, nestling in a valley, surrounded by woodland and olive groves, yet is only a 2 minute drive to the town of Sertá.
Our town dates back to roman times, with old ancient cobbled streets,as well as modern shops ,banks, library and health centre.
Sertá has two rivers running through it,offering scenic walks and relaxed bars where you can sit for hours admiring the views and people watch.!
Sertá has most facilities available,as its a regional tourist hub.
The excellent road network links you to tranquil lakes, rivers and mountain trails.
Sertá is close to pretty Xisto villages ,renovated ancient houses that showcase traditional living & Portuguese heritage, they are very interesting to visit, as are the bigger historic cities.
Local culture is passionate and sincere.
The restaurants are good value, food is fresh and wine abundant.
Dont forget, you have free wifi at Casa Lerryn,so you are always connected (if you want to be!)

What makes this property unique
Being close to nature in a private setting and yet minutes away to all ameneties is a unique advantage at Casa Lerryn.
Guests love the simplicity at Casa Lerryn, sunbathing whislt listening to birds singing across the olives groves and woodland, all in view from the pool and bbq.
Whilst renovating Casa Lerryn we were determined to retain the rustic stone to stay in keeping with the village homes we admire.
Casa Lerryn has distinctive round stone pillars which we restored as they add character.
Sertá is unspoiled, a secret escape! Its also very affordable
Our local supermarket is only a few minutes drive away. You can try local fish and meat and discover local specialties.
Our love of walking has shown us areas of countryside that feel like stepping back in time. Our maps take you through ancient villages where you will see traditional agriculture and living. The locals always have a friendly greeting as well.
In central Portugal eating and drinking is very affordable.
Our foreign guests are pleasantly suprised by the cheaper price of wine and freshly cooked meals.
O Regional and Ponte Romana offer amazing value, serving hearty, tasty food, you will never leave hungry!
We fell in love with the simple way of life that still exists here, locals work on their land, grow a lot of their own food and respect the beautiful land they live on.Its so peaceful here, and feels safe.
Autumn is the time we pick our grapes and olives, the oil is amazing and I make grape juice, guests enjoy both.
The natural river beaches are clean, quiet and safe, offering an opportunity to feel close to nature. The Atlantic coast boasts Figueira da Foz and Nazare where guests have surfed. The striking coastline is natural & easy to reach.
Our guests have appreciated our central location. If you want to discover historic, characterful towns, the IC8 motorway links you to beautiful places such as Coimbra,Aveiro and Tomar, all around an hours drive. They are university cities with cosmopolitan vibes.
