About this property
Character cottage (18c) on the edge of historic Belper
This charming 2 bedroom stone cottage was built circa 1790 and retains many original features. The ground floor comprises 2 spacious living rooms (4m x 4m). Adjacent to the kitchen is a lounge with log burner and the other is a lounge/dining room with the TV including a double sofa bed. The cottage is very close to the historic cotton mill / museum and river gardens within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site. Belper's award winning high street is a 15 minute walk away and just down the road is the Talbot (17c) restaurant / bar and the Tum Yum Thai Restaurant (basement of the early 19c North Mill) just over the bridge and mill weir. Walks from the river lead up to the Chevin overlooking Belper in one direction and the river gardens and nature reserve in the other. The Derbyshire Dales and Peak District are a short drive away; local attractions are Cromford (Arkwright’s Mill museum, canal walks, etc.), Arkwright’s Masson Mill (discount shopping), Matlock Bath (cable car, gardens, etc.), Middleton Top (High Peak Trail) and a multitude of beautiful villages and walks. The city of Derby with its Cathedral, Silk Mill, railway Round House and shopping areas, both ancient and modern, is 9 miles to the south. If you like a little more action Alton Towers is just 20 miles away - 35min drive.

The instructions to gain entrance to house where clear and precise. Everything you need was there very clean and tidy. Great suggestions on places to eat. A lovely cottage in a great location. It was an ideal base for me to go cycling. Definitely would stay again to use for a base to get out on my bike.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This is the second time I’ve stayed at this cottage - it is clean, comfortable and well equipped…a perfect base in a lovely area!
The cottage was beautiful it had everything you needed and more . It was very homely and I would highly recommend staying there we will be going back to stay .
The cottage is quietly tucked away off the road and surprisingly spacious. It contained everything we needed during our stay, all very clean and comfortable and lots of hot water. Easy walking distance to good restaurants and takeaways. The owner is very accommodating and helpful and allowed us to extend our stay by an extra day at short notice. The local industrial history is fascinating and we strongly recommend a tour of the North Mill.
Lovely property suited our purposes well, wanted a base with my two small children (2 and 4) to visit family in Derby. House well-equipped and spacious, a real home from home.

A lovely place to stay, I would definitely come here again.
Such a cosy place, more spacious than I was expecting as well! Had everything you'd need in my eyes, definitely appreciated the milk in the fridge for us. The streaming services are also a nice touch, overall we really enjoyed our stay, thank you!
Great cottage, in a lovely town, with great walks. The cottage itself came fully stocked with everything you could need, including shampoo and shower wash, kitchen was also stocked up with tea and coffee, and fresh milk in the fridge, and all the appliances you could need. We were pleasantly surprised.
Had a lovely break in Belper. The cottage was perfect. Very comfortable, spacious with great location. Good communication with owners. Hopefully will return later in year.
Very comfy spacious house. Milk in the fridge, dishwasher tablets supplied etc. would we stay again? Definitely!

Rather surprised by this review as there was no replies to messages during the stay or since and we still do not know why our normal 5* experience was rated 3*
Beautiful place. Yard/garden was a little small but adequate and fact there was a BBQ was great addition. Kitchen again a bit small but it was good enough for what we needed! Two lounges, bigger, plenty of space. And the two bedroom sizes were fantastic. Bit of road noise but we slept really well and was super quiet overnight. Awesome shower! The water pressure was fantastic. We had everything we needed and more. Parking just outside and there was a short walk to Belper mill and gardens next to river. Excellent comms from owners. Very happy and would return.
This property is in a nice neighborhood. It is a charming older house, nicely decorated. The hosts have supplied it well with the "extras" that you might need. We were greeted with a snack basket which we enjoyed. There were a few issues that needed attention and the host was quite responsive. Overall, a nice stay!
It is the second time we have stayed at Roy and Anne’s cottage and we loved it as much as we did the first time! We checked in after a fun packed day at Alton Towers and stayed a couple of nights. Belper is a lovely town with plenty of pubs, supermarkets and cafes. It is a cross between Haworth and Otley. The cottage is always clean and warm. The hosts are always attentive and easy to communicate with. Tea, coffee and milk are provided on arrival and the facilities are plentiful- lots of tv channels, Netflix, games, books and more.
We will definitely stay there again when we return to Alton Towers!
Highly recommended.
Just a short walk down the hill takes you to Belper. Mill, river Derwent, antiques centre, independent shops, fab restaurants and pubs. House has all you could need. View on the loo is the best.
Would be happy to stay again
Well resourced and lovely property, in a great spot. Would have been happy to stay there longer.

About the host
Hosted by Roy and Anne Stratton
We bought and refurbished the cottage in 2015 as a retreat for family and friends but we are keen for it to be more widely used so we are making it available to others at a very reasonable rent.
Why they chose this property
We bought this cottage because of its great location, south facing garden, large rooms, log burner and character features.
What makes this property unique
Great location for visiting historic Belper on foot and the Derbyshire countryside by car or bus.
