WE HAVE GONE SOLAR. We have 20 solar panels and a Tesla Powerwall2 battery, plus we still are connected to the grid. No more issues with power outages!

We now also have STARLINK for our wifi service, so even if cell towers are down, you won't lose Internet service.

Vista Montemar is a comfortable two story house overlooking the Caribbean Sea in a serene and secure gated community. Two spacious L-shaped verandas and a rooftop terrace afford panoramic views and the best in outdoor living. Ceiling fans throughout the house and verandas plus a/c units in bedrooms and kitchen add to the comfort provided by the ocean breezes. Bask in the gorgeous tropical flora and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of coquís (Puerto Rican tree frogs) and island birds. In the quiet of the early morning or late evening, you can even hear the surf!

The kitchen comes fully equipped, the house is tastefully furnished, and has a separate, indoor laundry room.

Each of the three bedrooms has its own door leading to the second floor balcony, and window shades to block the early morning sun, if desired. The centrally located upstairs full bathroom is shared by all three bedrooms. There is also another bathroom on the first floor, which features an attached outdoor shower, and a separate outdoor shower behind the house which is for rinsing off the sand after a day at the beach. Ample outdoor seating is provided in both covered verandas, as well as two hammocks on the second story veranda. A spiral staircase leads to the rooftop terrace, where additional patio furniture creates a relaxing environment in which to enjoy a cool drink amid stunning panoramic views by day and a starry sky by night.

The property is beautifully landscaped with all manner of tropical flora, including flowering flamboyant trees and amapolas (the official flower). There is plenty of parking space within the gated property.

Hidden gem—great spot

We loved everything about staying at Norma’s place—plenty of space for our family of 4, lots of outdoor areas to relax and enjoy the breeze, a quick walk to a fantastic beach. The kitchen was well appointed and living areas comfortable and spacious. Communication was clear and responsive, overall a great stay!

Great discovery in SE Puerto Rico

If you are looking for a house for a family to rent in southeastern Puerto Rico, this is a wonderful spot. It is a very short walk to a lovely beach, and in a gated community. The house is well-stocked with supplies. Communication with the owner was very efficient. And the sound of the coquí each night--unforgettable!

Quiet location with excellent beach access

If you are looking for a space to just relax and enjoy a view this location is a great option. The beach is close and has a fabulous natural pool that is excellent to just float in. The area is really quiet and not a ton of people around you may even have the beach to yourself.

Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!!!

I just cannot say enough good things about our stay as this property is absolutely perfect! Great location with just a two minute walk to El Cocal Beach and a 10-15 minute drive to Ralph's Food Warehouse. The beds were extremely comfy and the views from the balcony and rooftop patio are simply breathtaking! Norma, the property manager, is an absolute delight and she goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is to your liking. When you communicate with her, she makes you feel like you are talking to an old friend. Just a wonderful person! Plenty of beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards and other beach supplies at the house as well. Don't forget to try the outdoor shower! Stop searching, you've found your vacation spot!

Pure relaxation!

Our family of 4 (my husband and I and 2 college aged sons) stayed almost a week at this lovely property. The house was clean and quite comfortable. The highlight of the property are the 2 covered verandas with plenty of seating and 2 hammocks to relax in and take in the views of the water. We all enjoyed eating, relaxing and playing board games out there when not exploring Puerto Rico. Our host Norma was friendly and very easy to communicate with when we had questions. She goes out of her way to make sure you are enjoying your stay. The laundry room was also quite useful after our trek in the rainforest and kayaking expedition in Bio Bay!

Very confortable and quiet

Thank you for sharing your vacation home with us. It was very comfortable and quiet, we really enjoyed the night time music of the coqui with the other insects outside. We never saw an insect in the house and the cat never once bothered us. Getting there was a little scary because the GPS took us thru another route, but once back on 901 we called Jose Luis and made it okay. But all in all we had a good time, sat by the beach a couple of times and enjoyed the quiet beautiful surroundings. J n M South Carolina

Nice home for a family

The home was nice, very much a family vacation home. It was close to a beach. The owner was great, helpful and nice during the registration process and check-in was easy. the home would be good for a larger family who was interested in a quiet place for an extended period of time. We are a couple, so it wasn't the best fit for us. Unfortunately the power does go out a lot on the island and it happened to us while there. We were unsure how to handle that. The location is a bit far from restaurants and other sites in Puerto Rico.

Wow!

Pictures don't even do this property or the views justice. It is gorgeous and has everything you could ever think of right where you need it. Beautiful verandas with may seating options, a full kitchen that's fun to cook in and bedrooms with their own AC units so everyone is comfortable! The "inside-outside" shower, as our family called it, was a complete hit and we all waited patiently to use that one. Norma was a great hostess and checked in just the right amount too. Oh, and the beach is literally a quick walk down the hill. Don't pack anything for that though, Norma's got you covered with beach chairs, towels, boogie board and coolers!

Two weeks to toast the sun, wave to the sea, and call to the mountains.

A grand time. The best part were the two wrap-around porches and the rooftop deck with views to grace the sea. There we welcomed the mornings with coffee, played gin rummy in the afternoon, and graced the evening stars with a toast to the night. There were no downsides to our stay. The grocery store in Yabucoa was well stocked with fresh meats and vegetables, the local folk were gracious, and the 80 degree weather couldn't be beat. Would we come back? - in a heartbeat. The reviews by those who were there before us fit the bill to a T. And Norma was always available by phone, though once we settled in, there was no need for her willing care.

Excellent home away from home!

Vista Montemar was the perfect home away from home for us on our trip to Puerto Rico! The community is gated and there is a gate in front of the house as well, so we all felt safe and comfortable at all times. The house was clean and Norma even let us check in early since we came in on a red eye flight from LAX. Norma was an excellent host, communicating with her was quick and seamless. She answered text messages quickly and gave us some fun suggestions of things to do on the island. The walk down the hill to the beach was great, Norma provided a key fob since the entry to the beach is gated. Beach towels, boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas & other toys were provided. I planned other excursions as well, most of them ranged from a 30 to 45 minute drive from the house. We enjoyed this because it allowed us to get a sense of what living on the island is like since the house isn't in a heavy tourist area. We had fun singing songs on our drives too! We got groceries at the Walmart in Humaco for our stay, the Walmart was about a 15 minute drive from the house. It was on our routes to and from the house so it was easy to pop in and grab items on our way home as well. Overall, this is a great choice if you are planning a trip to Puerto Rico. The location puts you in a beautiful spot where the forest comes alive and night and you can wake up to the gorgeous blue Caribbean waters. Norma is an excellent host, if we come back to Puerto Rico we will defiantly be staying here again!!

Amazing!

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Montemar! The description is accurate and it was more gorgeous than the pictures! We had 5 in our group (my husband and I and 3 teenagers) and were very comfortable, plenty of room. The outdoor balcony and rooftop were great and that's where we spent the majority of our time (besides the beach of course). The beach was really a 2 minute walk, and we could choose to boogie board in the waves or swim and snorkel in the calm waters to the left. (the owner provided beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel gear, and boogie boards!) The kitchen was well stocked with equipment and a few spices. We cooked all our meals because it was just such a great kitchen to work in. The community is quiet and easy to walk. Nice neighbors that we had fun chatting with. We drove to Humacao Nature Preserve one day which was only about 20 minutes away. We went kayaking, paddleboarding, and hiked to a gorgeous beach where we swam and could see Cayo Santiago (Monkey Island) and Vieques in the distance. Communication with Norma was so easy that I felt very comfortable asking as many questions as we needed to. We texted a bit during our stay and it was fun learning about the place a little more. We also had a small issue while we were there regarding one of the teens locking a door and she was so helpful and understanding guiding us through what to do. We have traveled to Puerto Rico every year for the past 6 years and always stay in rental homes, and Norma was by far the easiest to communicate with! I have already recommended this place to family and friends and can't wait to come back!

Paradise - Found.

I cannot say enough good things about this home - it was one of the best things about our PR vacation. My 4 friends and I arrived to Norma's home in the dark and did not get to see the full delights of the home (like the view!) until the morning. The house is a great size, very comfortable for us 5 and I think would even be comfortable for 8 (with 3 couples sharing beds). There is balcony space galore, with nice deck furniture, so the house feels twice the size that it is. I think we spent every minute outside on the balcony / patio. (the hammock is a nice touch!) Yabucoa beach is paradise. It's swimmable and surf-able, clean and pristine, and nice and quiet. There are fun community grounds at the beach entrance that would be nice for small kids and picnics. I felt totally at home walking down to the beach and felt that my belongings were safe on the beach. The nice neighbors (turtle protectors) were an added joy. The house is obviously well-loved. Preparing meals together rather than always eating out saved us tons of money. Kitchen, bath, laundry, bedrooms - all furnishings were in great shape and totally sufficient for our needs. It was nice that the kitchen had a few spices / sauces / salad dressings left from previous vacationers, and a few more left after our departure as well. The garden was in gorgeous condition, and we had friendly lizards, snails, and a certain bird keep us company all the time. The only suggestion/complaint I could possibly have was if the outdoor shower was in better working order (the handles were missing), it might have allowed our group to move faster in the morning! (less waiting for the shower). The hose was sufficient tho. The owner was generously available for my last-minute questions and totally understanding about the fact that they were last-minute. One thing to note; the gardener / gatekeeper speaks spanish almost exclusively. We were late arriving and tried to communicate this by phone with him, and it was a bit comical, but we worked it out. Yabucoa is less touristy-crowded, but an easy drive to attractions like Charco Azul, a nature preserve with a pristine freshwater pool about 30 minutes eastward, and El Yunque and San Juan. We wanted to snorkel, so instead of returning to the crowds of Fajardo, we called the closest yacht club and asked for a referral for chartering a Catamaran (details are logged in the guest book at the house.)

Wonderful Week at Camino Nueavo

We loved our stay. Really enjoyed morning coffee on the veranda looking out at the ocean. Many comfy seats throughout the property. Norma was a wonderful host, checking in with us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and that everything was satisfactory. We had a little problem with the gate, but Norma got it fixed right away. About the host

Hosted by Norma Pettit

Host profile image
My husband and I fell in love with Vista Montemar at first sight. It was exactly what we were looking for--a quiet, relaxing place away from the hustle and bustle of San Juan, yet conveniently located close to shopping and restaurants, and only a 40 minute drive from the airport. I am Puerto Rican, and though my husband is not, he loves the island and its people, sights and culture as much as I do. We want to share our beautiful home with you and allow you to experience this island paradise in what we consider to be the perfect setting.

Why they chose this property

El Cocal Beach and Country Club was established fifty years ago to create a community of residents dedicated to preserving the flora and fauna of the area. The southeastern corner of Puerto Rico has unique vegetation and wildlife. The variety of coquí, or Puerto Rican tree frog, that lives in this region makes a distinctive sound. All coquí frogs sing their name, ”Coquí! Coquí.” But the variety of coquí found in Yabucoa sings, 'Coquí-qui-qui’. We were also thrilled to find out that marine turtles lay their eggs on our beach between the months of March and June! A local conservation group watches out for and protects these turtle nesting areas.

What makes this property unique

Most of the time the only sounds you will hear are those of the birds and coquis serenading you to sleep at night. Wake up refreshed and ready to enjoy a cup of Puerto Rican coffee and a view of the azure Caribbean Sea from the second floor balcony. Come and enjoy nature at its best at Vista Montemar!
