About this property

Glass House • Mt Mitchell Views • 5 Min to Penland

Explore. Cook. Create. Relax

Some places are simply where you sleep between adventures. Conley House was designed to be part of the experience. Set on six private acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, the house is filled with natural light, long-range mountain views, lush gardens, original artwork, and thoughtfully chosen details that reflect the character of our region.

Mornings begin with good coffee and views stretching toward Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. In season, hydrangeas, azaleas, herbs, native plants, and tiger lilies fill the landscape with color while fireflies twinkle in the treetops above. Open the doors and welcome the mountain breeze as you settle into the slower rhythm of mountain life.

For those eager to explore, waterfalls, hiking trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Penland School of Craft, Sugar Mountain,, and Asheville are all within easy reach. But many guests find themselves lingering a little longer than planned—reading in a cozy corner, baking bread from scratch, cooking the way they do at home (only with a better view), watching the sunset paint the ridges while ribbons of mist trace the river in the valley below, or waiting for fireflies to emerge beneath a dark sky full of stars. Whether you’re here to discover the mountains or simply enjoy the rare luxury of time and space, Conley House offers an authentic and comfortable home base for both.

ABOUT THE HOME

Originally two cabins joined by artist and former Penland director Bill Brown Sr., the home now features two suites and an open, light-filled living area. Many original railings and details remain, including a Doug Sigler-designed kitchen. Its passive-solar design captures warmth and sunlight year-round, framing mountain views from every room. The home features commissioned artwork and handmade pieces that reflect the area’s craft heritage.

VISITING IN THE OFF-SEASON: Winter views are breathtaking! Trails and waterfalls are quiet and serene. Some businesses adjust hours mid-December through February, but others offer pop-ups, events, and winter menus. If you’d like help deciding whether the off-season fits your plans, just ask—we’re happy to help.

CHILDREN: Children are welcome! This is a home, not a museum, but we ask parents to be attentive—move delicate items or cords out of reach as needed for safety.

Have a larger group? Our sister property, Dougs Way, sleeps up to 10 and is just 4 minutes away. Ask for details!

About the host

Hosted by Lisa Smith

Host profile image
Owner Rick Smith is an artist/blacksmith and professor of metals and blacksmithing. He operates an independent studio making work for galleries and by commission, while also heading the metals program at SIUC in Carbondale, IL. Rick was a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts and has taught workshops there many times over the years. His work is in the permanent collections of the Mint Museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Metal Museum, and the John and Robyn Horn Collection, among others. Rick likes nothing better than to spend the day on water, sailing or fishing, and really loves to travel.

Lisa Smith is a branding professional with a background in graphic design. A homebody, her favorite way to spend the day is cooking and baking. Lisa wrote a food column for seven years and her passion for the culinary arts is evident at Conley House.

Rick and Lisa have one son, Isaac, who is a photojournalist. With his wife Megan, a fibers artist and teacher with a specialization in Waldorf education, they have a young son whose name is Henry.

Lisa manages the property and oversees the day to day functioning of the vacation rental with the help of a cleaning service.

Why they chose this property

At 3600 feet above sea level, the view is fantastic and the weather tends to be mild even in the depths of summer.

THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The house was originally two cabins. Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the retirement of its founder Lucy Morgan, connected the two cabins with a living space and made a home for his family. His studio and many of the original touches can still be seen, including the railings made by his son, Bill Brown Jr. who is now a studio artist.

Having been a resident artist and studio coordinator at Penland not long after Bill Brown retired, Rick Smith admired the property for years. When it became available, he and his wife Lisa knew they had found something special!

Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women, teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. They now offer classes in all media and are the oldest and largest crafts school in America.

The history, beautiful surroundings, slower pace, artwork and the connection to the craft community all make Conley House quite exceptional! From the handmade cabinets and sinks to the stonework, artwork and tableware, you won't find another property like it . . . and, of course, it has a "million dollar view!"

What makes this property unique

We like to make it easy, because traveling can be stressful. By providing the basics like herbs and spices, flour, sugar and cooking oil, plus all the kitchenware and appliances you'll need, as well as things to help you relax, such as an assortment of teas, bath salts and infused bath oils our guests relax, get in vacation mode much faster and enjoy their stay more.

One the aspects of the house that sets it apart is all the attention to detail. From the complimentary bowl of chocolates and bath salts to the original artwork and craftsmanship, Conley House is not like any other vacation rental. Our guests often tell us that we "thought of everything!" We take pride in that, because we strive to make your stay something you will remember for years to come.

Conley House is clean, very private and has unobstructed views! It is located in a safe community of mostly studio artists and craftspeople. Being just 15 minutes to shopping, good restaurants and cafes, it is conveniently located, too.
