About this property
Cozy cabin in the woods within walking distance to Lake Michigan
Fern Hollow is an easy 7 mile drive to Saugatuck and was designed/built in 1980 in traditional Michigan-cottage style. Taking cues from old summer camps, Fern Hollow creates an atmosphere where guests can return to their youth and a time when they enjoyed 'camping out' with family and friends. Whether sitting around the campfire or the fieldstone fireplace, enjoying an outdoor shower, sleeping in the open air of the bunkhouse, or strolling the trails to the beach and playground, time spent at Fern Hollow is sure to relax the mind, sooth the soul, and return you to a time and place once cherished but not forgotten.
Fern Hollow is a charming cabin located on 13 secluded acres and comfortably sleeps 8. Roughly a half mile path walk to public beach access: West Side County Park (the north stairs by the restrooms are open) which can be walked to by trail or you could drive and enter through the park entrance.
Worried about not having air conditioning? There are tall trees surrounding the cabin so it's shaded… It’s very comfortable with ceiling fans, the double doors open, floor fans on as that really helps move the air with the screened in porch. While we DO NOT have Cable TV/channels -OR- WiFi at the cabin, cell phone service is good so you can use your phone and hot spots. There is a TV used as a monitor in the living room with an HDMI cord so you can stream from laptop/device as well as a Bluetooth Speaker.
The property is professionally sprayed for mosquitoes.
Public beach access within walking distance: West Side County Park which can followed by trail or you could drive and enter through the park entrance. If you choose to walk, please follow the Beach sign trail that is behind the fire pit until you reach a gravel road which is called Park Lane. You will see other houses/buildings on your trail walk, this is normal. Turn left onto Park Lane and follow to Lakeshore drive, you will cross the road into a parking lot and will see the playground. You will use the north stairs located by the restrooms to get down to the beach. This is a bit of a hike so if there a smaller children, a lot of gear/wagons or people who won't do well with unsteady grounds, please be sure to utilize the option to drive as many say that's easier.
There are 5 beds total:
- Full bed on the end of the screened in porch off of the bunk bedroom. There is a door that separates the bunk room from the screened in porch. There is curtain for privacy from the rest of the screened in porch.
- A set of full size bunk beds in bedroom.
- Queen size bed in bedroom .
- Queen size bed in separate sleeping pavilion outside.
• Please note that the queen and full size bunk rooms in the cabin do have walls/doors in between them and the living room but they do not go all the way up to the ceiling.
The cabin has a large screened in porch that wraps around 3 sides. There is an outdoor shower, gas grill, wood fireplace, fire pit (we provide wood and propane gas for grill). There is fully equipped kitchen with oven, microwave, toaster, silverware, plates, utensils, pots and pans, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to do check-in/check-out on Saturdays during the Summer Season (mid June through Labor Day weekend) as it's a very busy day for our cleaning crew.
When requesting to book, please do not leave a night or two in between other reservations that will leave un-bookable nights for future guests. We are not responsible for acts of God or Mother Nature.
Fern Hollow was built by a seasoned local contractor who was nearing retirement and who welcomed the opportunity to build a replica of the building style he claimed 'he cut his teeth on' in the 1930's as a young carpenter. His experience and attention to detail show throughout the cottage in authentic elements such as a hand stacked fieldstone fireplace, French-doors, open-shelving, single-timber-hand-cut beveled window sills and a center-floor radiant furnace ideal for cool Michigan mornings.
Fern Hollow has served as the epicenter for over 30 years of family reunions and many annual gatherings of old friends. We’re thrilled to share our slice of the woods with you.
We invite you to join in our history of spending summer days with loved ones, nature, and time.
