About this property

Scottish Highland Holiday Cottage in idyllic loch-side setting

Liddesdale, Keeper's Cottage is set in stunning west highland scenery on the Morvern side of Loch Sunart facing a mountain called Beinn Resipol. We rent it to friends, family and new guests too. Our season is from March to November, minimum seven nights and always starting on a Saturday. What it offers is unique: a place where time has stopped.

Our cottage is a not for profit family home. It's not like a lot of rentals managed by estates or run as businesses.
There is an outside chance you may discover a mouse whilst you stay there, and there will almost certainly be a spider somewhere, the water comes from the mountain and as such is prone to disruption at times, but despite all of this it has bags of charm and is adored by many regular guests.
We have a lovely cleaner who keeps it spick and span and a plumber who can usually come and help within 24-48hrs, however a lot of guests get the water back up and running themselves, its an easy and satisfying job to complete oneself.
As a result those who love it, absolutely cherish it, but we do occasionally get guests who are looking for a city-like level of functionality.
I do feel it's always worth letting first time guests know this up front to help manage expectations. But it is truly the best place in the world in my, and many people's opinion, and I hope you will discover this too :)

Sleeping arrangements are flexible. There are 5 single beds and 1 standard double. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well kept. There’s electricity, a bath and separate loo, but little has changed inside and out since the mid-18th century. The peaty water comes from straight from the burn, we love it, but we advise guests to drink bottled water. There’s heat from the kitchen Everhot and a wood burner in the sitting room, plus plug in electric heaters, but there’s no central heating. The cottage does not have a television, but there is wifi. Dogs and pets are welcome, but not permitted on soft furnishings or upstairs. We ask guests to bring their own bed linen, ie sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers and bathroom towels. However if this is absolutely not possible, then a laundry service can be supplied with good notice and an additional fee.

It is a good idea to bring staple foods and provisions although there are two good general stores in Strontian which is about five miles away - useful for topping up. Petrol and diesel are also available in Strontian. We do not have any fast charging facilities for electric vehicles.

About the host

The cottage is owned by five siblings - the Emersons - all of whom come and stay here up to three or more times a year. At the beginning of the season, in late March, all or some of us come up for a few days of intensive maintenance and repair work. At the end of the season, in early November, we return to assess what we need to do in the following spring and do a thorough tidy in preparation for closing the house down for the winter. Liddesdale is much loved by all of us and co-ownership focuses and binds us together as a family.

Why they chose this property

Liddesdale has always been special. Its unspoilt nature and the beauty of its surrounds, its exceptional sunsets on silver water occurring late at night in the summer, make it a place to restore inner peace and good health.

What makes this property unique

Alongside the views, the cosiness and the charm of yesteryear, there are not infrequently stags in the garden - one or two of whom seem almost tame. We have a pet stag called Derek who stops there for weeks on end sometimes.
