About Jill Rankin
More about the owners We are the Rankin family - Jill and Alan and son Ben (aged 11) and we live in Warwickshire in the UK. We bought in this area after spending many happy family holidays here. We liked the sheer volume of places to visit and things to do as well as the sunny micro-climate in this area and the ease of getting here from the UK. We love the area and the house and we wanted to make a holiday home for people to enjoy. Having rented extensively ourselves we feel we understand what is required to make a real holiday home from home where people can relax - especially with children. Ben our 9 year old has been involved in making sure all our younger guests are well catered for. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do....
Jill Rankin purchased this Farmhouse in 2015
Why Jill Rankin chose Brioux-sur-Boutonne
We also wanted a place that wasn't isolated, in easy reach of day trips to the coast and in walking distance from a restaurant - but still set in countryside overlooking fields. After an extensive search we found Les Ecuries. We loved the feel of the house and the lovely original features and the garden and the fabulous pool. It was simply a house you could relax in.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The lovely relaxed feel of the house, the countryside views, within walking distance of a small real French village with three restaurants and an amazing boulangerie and a supermarket and it's only just over an hour from the coast! The garden is simply great for children with lots of space to run around and the heated pool (We've stayed in so many properties over the years that had unheated pools that were only used by the children as a result with adults never venturing in!) It's a lovely place to relax and do nothing or get out and about. There is so much to see and do around here - even we are still discovering new places!

Away from it all!
We stayed here in August 2017 and had a super week. The weather was amazing and we were in the lovely pool every day without fail.
The house itself is a real home from home. Comfortable beds, quality bed linen and towels and an excellently equipped kitchen with an easy-to-use gas range cooker. The American style fridge freezer with ice maker was a big hit!
The house is very spacious - the layout of the bedrooms really works - as a family of 4 with 2 young children we had the ground floor accommodation and my parents and brother were able to be separate upstairs with their own (very nicely appointed) bathrooms.
There were a lot of games and toys at the Gite which were a big hit - darts, table tennis, pool inflatables etc My youngest son was very taken with the ride on tractor.
The surrounding area is very pretty and very rural. Melle market was great, a real genuine french market with delicious produce. We also had a delicious lunch in Melle at the Secret Garden.
The supermarket at Melle is new and smart with a great range. Only a 7 min or so drive away.
Jill provided a very comprehensive guide to the house and the surrounding area - we were quite lazy as the weather was so good but there are a lot of interesting day trips to be had.
In all we had a really relaxing, comfortable stay here - highly recommend!
Many thanks for your lovely review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay!
Well appointed house, gardens and pool ... with luxurious touches and attention to detail
We had a wonderful week in the house in July 2017. The house and gardens are very spacious and well furnished and maintained. We were three generations of a family holidaying together, so the bedroom layout particularly suited us (2 bedrooms upstairs and 2 on the ground floor). The bedding and towels we're all high quality, we all slept extremely well, in the very comfortable beds. The pool was a big hit, with plenty of comfortable loungers to relax on. We also enjoyed the games provided and it was lovely to have do much outside space to use. The owners have really payed particular attention to detail, with little extras and thoughtful touches which made it extra special, such the arrival pack, and toiletries in the bathrooms. We have visited the region before and particularly liked the facilities in Brioux and Melle so close at hand, and with the house being so we'll appointed we were happy to just relax there. Saying that we ventured to the lovely Angouleme, La Rochelle and the highly recommended Île de Ré, which are all within easy reach from the property for a day trip.
I would highly recommend the property, its situation and the region.
Many thanks for taking the time to write such a fabulous review!
I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the house and had such a lovely holiday.
You have captured in your review what we have been trying to achieve with Les Ecuries Brioux so I'm delighted that we seem to have hit the mark!
We'd love to welcome you again sometime.
Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Fantastic holiday home for families
This house had everything we needed for a wonderful holiday. The owners had thought of everything - a real home from home with some lovely touches. The beds were incredibly comfy and showers very powerful and a great sized bath for the children. Loads of space to spread out, great sized garden and the wonderful pool. My 9yr old son also loved the full sized table tennis table and we used the pool every day even though it was October! Highly recommend.
Peaceful idyllic retreat in rural France
This newly refurbished property was just the place for a family & friends get together. The spacious garden and lovely pool mean that you can easily fill your time at the house with children occupied with pool and games. There are also a number of easy walks around the house. Further afield we visited Cognac and the beaches of the coast and the islands. The local supermarket, and the usual French shops and restaurants meant we could stay locally for a significant period of the holiday without driving anywhere. The house is beautiful with ample internal space, well maintained, very clean and it is very well equipped. The beds and pillows were the best I have had in a rental property. The kitchen feels like a real home from home - and caters for the most experienced home-chefs. I really recommend this property to anyone. The weather was stunning for the entire week we were there and we had a fabulous time.
Thank you for such a fabulous review!
I'm delighted you and your family enjoyed your holiday so much

Les Ecuries Brioux is located on the border between the Deux Sevres and Charente Maritime departments of France located about an hour inland from the coast at La Rochelle . It’s an unspoilt agricultural area dotted with sleepy little towns and villages in rolling countryside – but within easy reach of the fabulous coast and islands for day trips. Cosmopolitan La Rochelle with it's fabulous port thronged with restaurants, the beautiful Ile De Re and the traffic-free Ile D'Aix are all within easy reach for a day trip. Bikes can be rented everywhere at the coast and there are some lovely cycle paths and quiet corners to be found.
This area of France has a micro-climate and boasts a similar sunshine record as the South of France but with temperatures in summer hovering around the mid to high 20s - meaning it's generally warm and sunny but without getting too hot. If it does get hot then you can always cool off in the private heated swimming pool!
As well as numerous places to visit at the coast, inland there are more half day and day trip options suitable for families of all ages such as Futuroscope (one of the best theme parks in France - suitable in my opinion for those age 7+), The Vallee des Singes (monkey valley 40 mins away ), Zoodessey, (nice animal zoo set in large open parkland and forest 20 mins away), silver mines at Melle (10 mins away), Planet des Crocodiles, Marais Poitevin (known as the Green Venice – lovely for walks and cycling) both 40 minutes away.
There are lots of interesting towns to explore and markets to visit - all within easy reach such as Confolens, Cognac (where you can also visit the Cognac houses), St Jean D’Angeley, Niort, Poitiers and Saintes.
There is more information on places to visit at the house and a wider description of beaches (there are too many to mention here) there is a range of options from quiet family friendly shallow beaches to wilder surfing beaches - often backed by forests of pine.
The area is great for cycling and walking with lots of quiet lanes and hidden corners to explore. We have provided walking and cycling maps and books for guests to use. From the house there is a lovely walk which takes about a three quarters of an hour and is suitable for children of all ages.
The area is renowned for its goats cheese, cognac, pineau de Charente (an aperitif made from the cognac eau de vie), the most amazing melons, oysters and mussels.
Brioux has 3 restaurants, take-away pizza, a supermarket, a butcher and a fantastic boulangerie/patisserie. An oyster and moule seller sets up a stall by the river on Sundays. There is a small weekly market held on Thursdays.
Brioux is 10 minutes drive South of Melle a 'petite city de charme' where there are bigger supermarkets and a wider range of eating options from simple to gourmet.
