We went back in time
My partner and I are both from a rural area and we remember childhood visits to great aunts and uncles who lived in cottages like Mickey's Cottage. From the knick knacks on the shelves, to the fablon splashback in the kitchen, the half nets on the windows and all the cushions and throws, we really were transported back. The garden is truly beautiful, with lovely old trees and a gorgeous barn next door. Bring your paints and pencils with you if you are arty, because you'll want to draw what you see. Amenities-wise, things are a little bit basic but they all work just fine, and we had some lovely meals at home in the garden at night. All in all, we loved our stay.
Quiet, comfortable, great owner
We stayed for 2 weeks in "Mickey's Cottage." Good features include comfortable beds, lots of towels, convenient location (not far to Gort), a quiet road with only one near neighbor, and a very friendly and helpful owner who lives nearby. (In truth, it's more of a 3-star house with a 5-star owner.) Parking is on the property, through a narrow gate. There is lots of music in several pubs in Kinvarra, and we were made welcome in sessions. The price was very reasonable, especially as it included electricity and heating oil.
The negatives are ones that may not be problems to everyone. One of the main reasons we do self-catering is to be able to eat at least some of our meals at home, (and the food in Irish grocery stores has become much better in recent years). It was not as easy to cook here as in some other places we've stayed. The kitchen is very small and somewhat erratically equipped. We think it needs a second frying pan and an electric coffee maker. We left (intentionally) several sharp knives and a small baking pan for the oven. There are lots of bowls and some measuring equipment, and there are pots in several sizes. The refrigerator has a very small freezer whose inside door does not close well and frosts up quickly. There is a flat-screen tv, but it gets a limited number of channels -- only RTE. The biggest issue for us was the lack of wi-fi in the house. Still, we enjoyed our stay very much and would consider renting this house again.
Loved this cottage! It was clean, well-equipped and had a great location for exploring the western part of Ireland. The gas fireplace was nice to have to help with the chilly mornings. Kinvarra, a 5 minute drive, was very nice. We really enjoyed the banquet at Dungaire Castle in town also. The only reason we gave this property a 4 instead of a 5 was the bed. If you are tall, over 6 feet, which my husband is, you won't quite fit. He did not sleep well, but otherwise highly recommended!
A little dated but exactly what we were looking for.
Great location but a little dated. It's small but was great for our visit. Priced right for what it is.
