About this property
Luxury villa with large garden and private pool in a quiet corner of Gaucin
Los Buhos (The Owls) is a very spacious and luxurious traditional-style villa, full of character and charm, located in a quiet corner of the white village of Gaucin, with a large, well-stocked garden, private salt-water pool and unbelievable views - ideal for outdoor living in the summer. The villa is decorated in 'campo chic' style and stocked with paintings and sculptures, most of them the work of the large artistic community for which Gaucin is well known. A forty-foot long, five-arched loggia, with covered outdoor dining area, looks over the south-facing garden, as well as enjoying the stunning views down to the far distant straits of Gibraltar and the Rif mountains in Morocco. The garden has many quiet corners to sit in sun or shade, as well as an area for playing boules, or table-tennis, or simply relaxing in the hammock.
The large kitchen was completely modernised in 2024 in an open-plan style with a large central island, with the latest modern appliances, including two ovens and a large induction hob, while retaining a luxury rustic feel that fits in well with the style of the rest of the house. A breakfast room with multiple-aspect windows sits alongside the kitchen area.
Outside kitchen is a barbecue area overlooking the pool, with its terrace and sunbeds.
In the cooler months the spacious villa, with its garden and multiple terraces, creates an ideal space for enjoying the winter sunshine during the day and then retreating to the deliciously warm and cosy interior once the sun sets, with under-floor heating throughout, plus two wood-burning stoves in the lounge and the formal dining room, and an open fireplace in the kitchen.
The four large double/twin bedrooms are all light and spacious, with beautiful wooden-carved beds, very comfortable mattresses and fine quality cotton sheets. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.
Although the villa feels as if it is in the countryside, the many excellent tapas bars, restaurants, shops and other facilities of the village are all within a few minutes walk. The only problem is you might find you just don't want to leave the villa!

About the host
Hosted by Ian Cockburn
We are a professional couple (both art historians) from Wimbledon, with three adult sons. We run our own business (Art & Culture Travel Ltd) which operates in London and also runs cultural trips to Europe. As well as a strong mutual interest in art, we also enjoy tennis, outdoor activities and a very full social life. Living between London and Gaucin allows us to enjoy all of our interests to the full.
Why they chose this property
The climate in southern Andalucia is wonderful, and Gaucin is probably the most beautiful, authentic 'white village' in the whole region, as well as being home to over twenty artists studios.
Villa Los Buhos is exceptional, being very spacious and well-designed, with a large garden, private pool and incredible views all the way to the straights of Gibraltar and the Rif mountains in Morocco. It feels as if it is in the countryside, yet it is also in the village, within a short walk of all the bars, restaurants, shops and other facilities.
We invite many friends here and most of them don't want to leave!

What makes this property unique
The villa was built in traditional style over a period of seven years, by a lady who had a remarkable eye for detail and quality, combined with a great instinct for layout, light and double-aspect views from almost every location in the villa.
The garden was largely created by a Japanese man who lived here for 14 years and introduced a great variety of exotic plants and trees. As well as a very beautiful salt-water swimming pool, the garden has many quiet corners, and exceptional views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, but also spaces for playing boule and table tennis, or just relaxing in the hammock.
Overlooking the garden is a wonderful south-facing loggia which provides space for relaxing as well as covered outdoor dining, with a view to die for.
The only problem? It's such an incredible environment that we sometime have to force ourselves to go out and enjoy everything the village has to offer as well!
