We had a wonderful stay! The home was beautiful and exactly as described. It was very close to Salem and the town of Marblehead was also an experience and beautiful town.
John was easy to contact and was available to help, thank you!
Lovely large house, comfortable for family group, fabulous location just at the edge of Old Town and just a few minutes’ walk to Gas House beach, Grace Oliver’s beach, and Old Burial Hill.
John is a highly communicative host. The location was the best part of the home, where we were able to walk the entirety of Marblehead! The property is spacious, though the bedrooms themselves were a little snug. The attic space was a great bonus area for our kids to play.

Great large family home!
This house was awesome to stay at. We will be coming back hopefully 4 years to come. It is nice to have a place to know we can come back to year after year. There's plenty of space or a couple families and everything you need to make your stay comfortable.
We rented this house for our daughters wedding which was in Nahant. John was a great host. The house was a perfect space for the wedding party to get ready. The location was great, lots of little shops and restaurants.
Charming old home with large family room that accommodated all guests. Unfortunately, a couple of the kitchen appliances did not function properly, making it impossible to cook at the house.

Very Nice and Comfortable House
First, John was a pleasure to deal with, and made everything easy.
The house is good sized and well located. Short walk to town. Has a great deck to enjoy a drink or a meal or just relaxing.
Plenty of rooms for a large family. The bed we stayed in was a comfortable double bed. Shower was excellent, and the house was very clean.
Do not expect the latest furnishings etc; house could use a bit of updating. But for us, it was a perfect place to stay for the weekend in the great and interesting town of Marblehead.
My only gripe, and it’s a minor one, is related to parking. I wish we could have fit two cars in the driveway. There is on-street parking, so it wasn’t terribly difficult, but we did have two cars and had to deal with folks parking outside the house in the additional spot. Otherwise, everything fab!
The house had lots of rooms, which was perfect for our family. The location was also amazing. Close to a beach and really nice area. The only issue we had was with the cleanliness. It could use additional cleaning especially all the touch surfaces. The walls around the kitchen staircase were very dirty. kitchen cabinets were absolutely filthy as well as inside the bottom cabinets, especially on the lazy susan. With a deep cleaning this property would be very nice. Property owner/manager said we could let him know if any issues but it is hard to correct cleanliness once your group has arrived, but it felt a little discouraging to not feel property was properly cleaned.
We had a very good stay at this property. The house is very large and spacious, great for our 4 teens to spread out in. The kitchen is well stocked and the tv room has multiple couches and chairs to gather and watch movies. It was great that 3 of the bedrooms have tvs in as well, as after walking around all day it's nice to watch tv in bed. It was so lovely to walk around the town. You are 2-3 mins from the ocean, and lots of restaurants and great shops. Getting to places like Salem, or Boston are also easy and not to far way. The one thing I will say is that the couches and chairs in the tv room are very worn out. My suggestion would be to get some covers to update the look, as they are still comfortable. John was very easy to communicate with and very helpful with recommendations.
This was the perfect house for our trip of 8 adult friends. The house is old and charming but all of the appliances and bathrooms are updated and the beds are unbelievably comfortable. The location was just 20 mins from Salem, a few mins from Stop and Shop and a bunch of other large chain stores, and just three mins from a Dunkin Donuts and liquor store. The neighborhood is pretty and quiet and the pond nearby has a ton of ducks. The owner was very reachable and communicative. Would definitely stay here again. The front door was a little difficult to open given the fact that it was so hot and the wood probably expanded but the side door was easily accessible and opened easily. And we had no problem parking three cars right in front of the house/in the driveway.

Best vacation all year!
Our group had an amazing time here. We explored the town of marblehead and Salem. There are great little walking paths all over town and beautiful pond across the street. The old burial cemetery from hocus pocus is close too! We went to The barnacle, Atomic Cafe, and the muffin shop. We took uber to Salem so we did not have to worry about driving.. there is a bus stop but it ended up being cheaper for an uber since there was 6 of us. Salem was great of course too! We definitely would like to go back !!!
The house is awesome and very large !!! Plenty of room for everyone. There's also a piano room! Got to brush up on our skills. Haha! Thanks John!

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Listing accuracy
Not what we expected
Listing is a little deceiving. Expected the property to be a little more updated. Musty smell when you walk in. Supplies not fully stocked, no ice. No one was happy that we had to wash bedding and towels used. You pay a cleaning fee that should not be our responsibility. We would definitely come back to Marblehead, but will not rent that property again.
I would've given 5 stars if not for a few things. First, there were no directions on how to use the stove. We didn't figure it out until our last day there. Directions should be somewhere on how to use it. Second, I got a sliver under my fingernail from the decking. It's very old and needs replacing. Lastly, we would have spent a lot more time in the attic if it wasn't so hot. I would recommend putting an air conditioner up there. We stayed at the end of August and it was extremely hot. Other than that, we had a great stay at this historic house! Thanks for having us!
Great size for multi families. Great location to walk to and enjoy the Festival of Arts, beaches, concerts at Crocker Park, restaurants, shops, Red’s Pond and to explore Marblehead’s rich history.

About the host
Hosted by John Johnson
We hzave ownd tis house since 1980 and have had many happy summers at the beaches and pond nearby. We added on a huge family room, kitchen eating area and back deck in anticipation of our growing family and we spent most of their time there enjoying views on three sides! I am a retired energy conservation engineer working for a large company but I am now travelling a lot (business and pleasure) so renting my home out during the summer is perfect for us (although we hate missing the best part of living in Marblehead - the summer activities!).
I moved here in 1977 straight after graduating my engineering program at University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana campus), since I fell in love with Marblehead at first sight! I have never tired of seeing and smelling the ocean next door and always feel that "Ahhhh!" moment when I drive past Grace Oliver Beach on the way to the driveway after a long hard day at work.
Why they chose this property
The neighborhood is filled with young children and everyone is very friendly. We are all professionals in the neighborhood and we live here because while the home is near the central Historic District, we all love the open areas and countryside features of the neighborhood. It is a very quiet neighborhood and everyone looks out for each other. That's why I always feel safe and welcome here in this little gem of a neighborhood. You will too!
What makes this property unique
This house always draws a "Wow!" when people first see it. It's a central-entrance Colonial built in 1875, but beautifully maintained and retaining all the original architectural features that made it special in 1875: exterior Greek Revival details, shutters (real ones) that still work, interior mouldings, and many built-ins that make living here both beautiful and convenient.
We added a huge family room that adjoins the conveniently arranged kitchen and allows everyone to join together in activities. An outdoor deck is right off the family room and has couches, chairs and tables for outdoor relaxing and eating.
The best feature, however, is the location - walkable to everything great about Marblehead and on the border of the Historic District. There are so many unique hidden walkways and stairs in Marblehead that you will undoubtedly spend many hours exploring the neighborhood and each time you will find something interesting you missed the last time!
