Loved the location!
It is a great place to stay, convenient to everything. We also appreciated how clean it was. The biggest drawback I think are the stairs, 3 flights and pretty steep but if you can do these, it’s great!

Thanks for the review, Kathy, and I'm so glad to hear you loved the location! We love this neighborhood, too - all of the cafes, restaurants and parks, and the proximity to the best spots in NYC. The stairs can give you a little workout, but this is a brick historic landmark building, built in 1868 - a walk-up full of character that we don't find in new construction. The architecture in this historic district is pretty stunning. And the stairs are at least good preparation for the walking you do touring NYC! :) Thanks again for your stay and kind words.

terrific apartment in great part of jersey city. very comfortable, near key amenities (supermarket, mall with lots of restaurants, movie theater, path train) and major roadway (but apt is on quiet street). owner was more like a host - responsive and very nice. highly recommend.

Live like a local!
We loved our stay, my wife and I were in town for a wedding. The location is perfect. The apartment is directly across the street from a small grocery store. There is a gas station , Burger King, and liquor store one block away as well. Not to mention a 5 minute walk from a couple of neighborhood restaurants and Newport Center Mall. The train station is next to the mall and a 5 minute walk. It’s quiet at night and feels safe.
The apartment has everything we needed, multiple space heaters, linens , kitchenware, and it was CLEAN. It is a bit of a work out to carry your luggage up to the 3rd floor but other than that, the building is old so you get that vintage northeast feel.
Cindy was very responsive, even though we had no issues she did make herself available at all times.
I recommend and would gladly stay there again.

Small clean apartment on the 4th floor
We had a wonderful time in NYC. My daughter got engaged while we were there, and he ended up staying with us. Maybe It is a little small for 5 people. HAHA! The kitchen is well equipped, and easy to work in. The bed in the master was heaven to sleep on. Plenty of storage, and an updated bathroom. Linens were abundant, and of good quality. There is really only one bed, the day bed is so squeaky, that no one could really sleep on it. There were various groceries left from previous renters. A little unusual, but came in handy. It is a pretty easy 30 min PATH train ride to 34th street.

Kay, glad to hear that you had a wonderful time and that you appreciated the updated bathroom, well-equipped kitchen, "heavenly" master bed and close proximity to Manhattan! This one-bedroom apartment is not intended for a large family - it is listed as a one-bedroom, ideal for one or two guests and can sleep up to four maximum. We accepted your original reservation of four people and made it clear we don't accept groups larger than four since it is a one-bedroom. Days before your stay, you requested to add a fifth person because your daughter's fiance planned to propose (your request: "would you mind if he slept on the floor for those 2 nights. PLEASSSSE! We would never do this without asking first. She is totally unaware of his plans, and we are so excited about the idea of her engagement happening this way.") How could we say no to a special family moment and a proposal in NYC? Despite the acknowledged space constraints and in support of your special trip, we accommodated you - we made an exception to our large group policy and we even waived the standard fee for an extra person, saving you $125. Due to your group size, it seems you punished the apartment with a low rating, as this is the lowest review we've ever received. The apartment is less comfortable for 5 people than it would be for 2-4 - it's not intended for that. What a shame, as we were trying to help (and since we didn't charge more, it really just meant more linens & clean up for the service team). Sadly, I feel conflicted about this stay - we would always try to help the next guest with special circumstances, but it's a shame that our accommodation of your circumstances led you to leave a lower rating. I hope your trip was memorable and enjoyable and I'm glad you mentioned you had a wonderful time. I hope our future guests will consider our other reviews more reflective of the experience they would have with a group that fits the listing requirements.
Pros: Highly functional space - everything within the apartment works and good layout if you are mixing remote work with vacation. Secure but easy building access. Very convenient location, felt safe at night. The apartment itself was clean.
Cons: Building entryway and halls are messy and cluttered. Hall smoke detector was missing on our floor (clearly had been removed). The apartment could use a paint job and other sprucing up. We left a couple of days early and checked into a hotel (despite paying in full) when I saw a mouse scamper across the living room.
Bottom line: It is an old row house that is only partially renovated. The price is right if you are willing to accept the tradeoffs.

Hi, Carla. Thank you for your stay and review. I'm glad you appreciated the convenient location and our great neighborhood, as well as the layout of the apartment. This is a historic rowhouse that is included in the National Register of Historic Places as it was built in 1868, and the full block was created as housing for a historic brewery, the Eagle Brewing Company, that was on the block behind our building. Both the building and the neighborhood retain their historic character, and we try to convey that with our descriptions and photos. I wish we had known about your issues during your stay so that we could have attended to them. I am frequently on site and the building is regularly serviced by the exterminator, and we're always happy to do our best to make our guests as comfortable as possible. We appreciate the feedback and have incorporated it into our next servicing of the apartment. Thanks again for your stay and safe travels.

Spacious rental in safe neighborhood and walking distance to cafe, park, mall & public transit to NY
We stayed four nights and family loved the spacious rental with gleaming hardwood floors and full kitchen accessories to cook a gourmet meal. Unit is extremely clean, linen and towels were fresh, and bed was very comfortable.
I worked remotely for two days and Internet speed is very good and building/neighborhood is quiet enough for conference calls.
Unit is on the 3rd floor of the building so it's a climb up the stairs if you don't mind. Being on the top unit allows for a nice quiet stay.
Instructions for check-in was easy with lock box. Surprisingly, there is plenty of street parking and although the sign says resident only, they do not actively check for resident stickers, only that you must avoid parking on alternate days between a certain time for street cleaning.
We left our car parked except for moving it on alternate days and used public transit all five days. Although NJ transit might be a bit confusing at first as it uses PATH and light-rail, it was easy to get to NY and use MTA. There are two subway options within walking distance nearby and it to takes you directly to WTC or 33rd Ave. close to mid-town.
The last item worth mentioning is the proximity of cafe for an amazing cup of coffee and breakfast sandwich, mall, and nearby park where we were able to play tennis and splash park park to cool off afterwards. There is also a convenience store around the corner with grocery and fruits which we frequented several times.

Thomas, I'm so thrilled you and your lovely family enjoyed your stay! Thank you for your kind review and for spending your 4th of July holiday in our apartment!
We renovated the hardwood floors and soaring, beamed ceilings when we lived in the apartment - we're pretty proud of how it turned out and glad you loved it, too. :) Smith & Chang is just the best for coffee on your way to visit the fabulous Hamilton Park. Impressive that you got a tennis match in!
So happy that you were able to enjoy everything the neighborhood has to offer and the easy access to all the sites in NYC. It was a true pleasure meeting you and your family. Thank you for being a great guest and treating the apartment so well. I hope you will be back again in the future!
I had a good stay for three weeks while I searched for an apartment in the area. Cindy helped resolve a couple maintenance items during my stay. Enjoyed it.

Location,location,location
Cindy was a very responsive host. The unit is a short walk to the PATH train to NYC by cutting thru Newport mall (which Cindy clued us into). You have a supermarket, regional mall, and mega liquor store mere blocks away. If you forgot anything from the market there is a small grocery store (with great Indian food) literally next door. There are great restaurants nearby as well (I’d recommend Rumba Cubana and Hamilton Pork). We had family and friends over for Xmas Eve and Day. There was ample room and everyone remarked how the brick wall, exposed wood beam ceiling and (artificial) fireplace made the unit look “like a country cabin in the city”. 2 guests slept over comfortably with the pullout futon. The only negative I can think of are the stairs. If you don’t think you can negotiate 4 flights of steep and narrow stairs on a regular basis, this unit probably is not for you. Any inconveniences in this older unit are outweighed by its superior location. So easy to get to NYC, without the price and hassle of NYC !

Very nice stay experience
Cindy, thank you for hosting my family (2 adults and 2 kids under 11). The place was very easy to find. Your directions, information and communication was excellent. The apartment was clean and as you know we felt it clean as well - it was treated as we treat our home.
Two things to consider changing: (1) could be the bed with the metal frame. The frame made such a squeaky noise that I didn't sleep the first night. The other nights I was able to sleep because I was probably so tired of walking so much in NYC. (2) could be the TV to smart TV. So, tenants can tap into their streaming services accounts like Netflix , Hulu, Amazon...ect
The place was close to the metro/subway and very easy to commute to NYC.
Parking was hard to find, but once we got a spot, I didn't move the car except for the cleaning day like you told me - and we got no tickets :)
So, yes I would recommend this probably to family and friends.
Thank you for being such terrific host!

About the host
Hosted by Cindy Mullock
I grew up in a bed and breakfast, with twenty strangers-turned-friends at the breakfast table every morning, so sharing my home with fellow travelers seems natural to me. I've called New York home since 2000 and have also lived in France, Ecuador, Chile, and Australia. I love planning my next trip and would be happy to help you plan yours. If you need any advice on navigating New York and Jersey City, let me know!
Why they chose this property
I love the historic nature of this property - part of an old 19th century brewery complex - as well as the neighborhood, which combines beautiful brick rowhouses, scenic parks, and loads of charming restaurants, coffee shops and bars. All in quick access to the best of NYC!
