About this property

COZY, RIVER-FRONT CABIN, PRIVATE, ROMANTIC AND *PARTIES OK W/CONDITIONS

AT JUST 2 MILES from Bergstrom airport and 6.2 miles from CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS (COTA), the Penny River cabin built in 2014 is located in the absolutely perfect location -- far enough fr town for relaxing peace and quiet but a short hop via paved access to 2 main highways and 3 main arteries that feed directly into north, central and south Austin, respectively. We rigrously sanitize and disinfect the property inside and out.

We are gated for extra security and feature a privacy fence on all 3 sides (the side featuring the beautiful Colorado River is open). The ideal arrangement here is for 3 adults. This puts mom and dad in a master bedroom on a beautiful new Tuft N Needle King Size bed with their own private bathroom and one additional individual (up to and including an adult) in the guest/study on a Murphy single (also brand new Serta, very comfy!).

KICK BACK...
in our Athens Mountain Pine Cabin. It is super-efficient, comfy and features decor that lean antique. Hit the deck and take in the beautiful Colorado River with all its wildlife and hundreds of songbirds. Moms, pops, kids, seniors, friends, *all welcome, even *Parties, but please advise us at the time of the booking of the number of anticipated guests you will invite and the expected duration of their stay and the duration of the party. (*Parties and guests temporarily restricted because of CV19). A huge plus at Penny River is that your cabin is basically 100% private; the owner lives on the property as well, but in a fenced-off, separate section. A reminder safety-wise is that the entire property is gated and fenced (except the side open to the river), adding a major degree of safety for you, your family, possessions and automobiles. Management accesses the area with the cabin for maintenance and to access their automobiles. Night lights feature motion-detection activation. Management will email, phone or knock on cabin door before entering -- should some maintenance issue require. We will only enter the cabin in your absence if some urgent or emergency issue warrants, " first knocking on -- twice -- and only then entering the premises.

Nights at Penny River can be almost magical. An impressive 115' x 30' back yard, plush with St Augustine grass, opens to a huge night sky above. Moonlight lights are especially captivating. Grill on the patio and handle a full party of guests (up to 25 total, which includes yourselves) on the deck/patio. A sliding glass kitchen window allows through-food-service to the deck for convenient serving and clean up.

We can't over-emphasize the 9 glorious miles Penny River is from downtown and the downtown noise, bustle and pollution, but if you must go into town you are mere blocks from 2 major highways to get you there using any 1 of the 3 major arteries into Austin from the east side. These connect to the north, central and south sides, accordingly (ask us). The lower section of the wine rack has lots of pamphlets on where to go, what to do and how to get there. Or maybe you're the quieter type that would prefer to stay close to the cabin and nature and just visit one of several beautiful hicking trails in the immediate area.

You might be looking for the ultimate quiet rest, in which case fill your pipe with your favorite tobacco, your glass with your favorite wine and drift away in the quiet and peace of Penny River.

INSIDE THE CABIN:
Every attempt is made to stock the cabin with essentials (paper towels, bathroom tissue, mosquito spray, charcoal starter, etc.). Should you throw a party for guests other than those booked, please give us a body county in advance and, most especially, AN AUTOMOBILE COUNT. This is to make sure we advise you in advance as to where on the street overflow parking is permitted.

If you do decide to explore downtown Austin don't miss beautiful Zilker Park, which abuts an amazing botanical garden. There are hiking trails everywhere. Ask locals what THEY like and don't be afraid to ask them what you'd like to see and explore. Austin is extremely friendly.

Finally, Penny River is secured by a gated and locked entrance and further secured by a privacy fence on all sides except the River, of course. 2 cars can easily park inside the confines. Please remember to ask before arriving in more than 2 cars; fire regulations by our insurance company require us to situate the cars in a certain way.

Once again, as we are subject to scheduled and sometimes unscheduled maintenance (lawn mowing, a plumbing problem, an electric failure resulting from a brownout or blackout) we will always attempt to give you as much advanced notice as possible before accessing the general area of your cabin. If we can't reach you, we may need to access your area unannounced. Unscheduled maintenance emergencies may not allow much advanced notice and possibly none. Thank you for understanding.

Very nice hideaway!
We had a very enjoyable stay! The host (Jim) is a super nice guy who made our stay even better. The kitchen was very well stocked, which is important to us as we cook our own meals whenever possible on our trips. It is located very close to COTA so that made it very easy to get to the track and back.

Great host, great patio, great property
We were in Austin for a week for our daughter's wedding. We had numerous friends and family visit us at the property. There is plenty of parking, plenty of chairs, great patio and a great view of the river. The host lives behind the property which was a great asset as he was always "on call" if/when we needed him. The property is close to the airport so that was also a plus for us as we had lots of folks coming and going. I highly recommend this VRBO for folks who want a quiet place with rustic beauty.

About the host

Hosted by Jim Lacey

Host profile image
A native Texan of Laredo, Tx, and a Vietnam War Era vet, owner JIM LACEY is a pianist, guitarist, composer, artist and inventor, now retired. Always anxious to meet new folks and hear their stories but I understand many guests are here for privacy and seeing the sights, not visiting the owner. Ask to visit if you like but no matter if you don't.. =)

Why they chose this property

I found this amazing untouched lot on the Colorado in 2012 and could hardly believe it was available. Surely someone should have been grabbed it way before then if for no other reason than as an investment. Once cleaned up and decked out with its wonderful river view 42 feet above the Colorado, numerous parties came calling wanting to buy it. Thanks but no thanks! I wondered how it remained so unnoticed for so many years (8 years after the owner died, it was still unclaimed). Being on south-east side of Austin it has the huge benefit of catching the prevaling south-easterly wind, so there is virtually no smog or pollution from the city. My favorite plus out here? The huge open night sky full of stars and the moon. You won't forget Penny River, that's a promise.

What makes this property unique

The incredible quiet.
The peacefulness.
The super clean air.
Watching the pelicans and ducks and others "fish" in huge numbers and knowing that the opposite bank is in the flood plain (at 25 feet vs 42 feet on this side), the far side can never be built on, meaning the view from Penny River will always feature the river, the trees, the wildlife, the quiet and the peace...

Within very short drives in almost any direction there are numerous
walking trails in this area. In fact, Austin boats one of the highest Walk Scores in the nation. The trails are extremely well marked and maintained, identifying length of walk to be expected and often include terrific photos of the wildlife you can expect to encounter. Histories, mating practices, eating habits and evolution are usually revealed.

Many trails are free to walk; those charged are very inexpensive.
Still others ask for a small donation to help maintain the trails.
Early spring and fall along these trails can be exceptionally gratifying but the State and City upkeep of them makes a special treat no matter what time of year you choose to visit Austin.
