About this property
1,500' Shore on Deep Bottom Cove, Tisbury Great Pond
This is our year-round house, built for us in 2015, located on a gentle bluff on the west shore of Deep Bottom Cove. We wade, swim, sail, sun, paddle and row from our 1,500' feet of private shoreline where we can also just sit and enjoy the natural stillness and wildlife. To reach ocean waves, sail, row or kayak 1.0 - 1.2 miles across Tisbury Great Pond to South Beach. Fall asleep with the sound of the ocean.
The contemporary style house features a expansive wooded waterfront views, single-level living open floor plan, Baltic birch custom cabinets, spacious well-equipped kitchen, hardwood ash floors, and handicap door widths. It sleeps 6 (1 queen, 1 double, 2 twin beds) in 3 bedrooms with 2 baths. The deck features a gas grill, furniture, and an enclosed outdoor shower.

About the host
Hosted by Felicity Russell
We hope you enjoy your time on Thumb Point. Between the two of us, Joel and Felicity, we've spent 118 summers or parts thereof within 400 feet of this spot. We love it, and now we live here year-round, in this house built (in 2015) for us, our retirement, and extended family. Please cherish and enjoy it and the beauty and tranquility of the land and water around it.
Why they chose this property
From Joel -
Serene, secluded, scenic. A delightful wooded waterfront hideaway abutting undeveloped forest with oaks and pines. Accessible from the West Tisbury/Edgartown Road via a 1.6 mi. single-lane private dirt road. The house is situated on 5.7 acres and out of sight from neighbors to the north and south that sparsely populate Thumb Point. No neighbors to the east and the one neighbor on the other side of the cove is largely obscured by the woods. The house is about a 15 min. drive from Edgartown and Vineyard Haven and about 20 min. from Oak Bluffs.
From Felicity -
My father came to the island every summer of his life. My mother married him in 1931. They continued to come. We 5 children spent all our summers with lots of cousins (otherwise only seen on Thanksgiving).
In 1965, Mother and Father met the Fishers, a couple in their 90's, who were charmed by the nice young (50's) couple, and took them to see a hunting camp they had built on Deep Bottom Cove off Tisbury Great Pond. The camp was on a small bluff, close to the water, with 1,500 feet of shoreline on 5.7 acres.
Mother and Father bought it. In those years, opening the barrier beach to flush the Great Pond in support of oysters and other shellfish was done with shovels. I did my part.
There have been a lot of changes on the island, with an accelerating building boom, and many more people arriving by air. You see this growth most starkly in the winter. On this part of Deep Bottom Cove, we look across to the same 3 houses and barns, now much harder to distinguish, due to tree growth, as we did 50 years ago. In the last half century, one additional house (ours) has been added to this side on of the cove, although two have been replaced.
Human-induced change is minimal. It's peaceful to experience change due to only natural processes, the tides and weather, the decades of slow transition from tiny scrub woods, to taller scrub woods.
It's relaxing.
It's reassuring.
We hope you find it so.

What makes this property unique
From Joel -
How do you take your water? Ocean, Great Pond, Cove? You have your choice because all are within convenient reach. The calm waters of Deep Bottom Cove are 100’ from the house and lead to Tisbury Great Pond, which is just a narrow barrier beach away from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the Vineyard’s beautiful south shore.
But also, the Trustees of Reservation’s Long Point visitor center is a 1-mile wooded walk from the house which will bring you to an assortment of wooded walking trails through conservation land and include easy access to Long Point beach.
From Felicity -
I know many other places on the island that have been cherished by families for centuries. Our half century is not record-breaking. But if you can slow down to island pace, you will have what is to us, our sisters and brothers and their children, and our children, a unique benefit.
