The experience was amazing! The house was very beautiful and clean. John is very thoughtful about the comfort of who stays there and has provided every amenity one could need. My family and I loved the stay and would recommend it to everyone! I will definitely visit again if I can!
This was a lovely apartment and we enjoyed our trip very much. John was very helpful and responsive. Just what you hope this kind of experience will be!
Our family of four stayed at John's place for a week. We needed somewhere close to Northwestern, so the location was perfect. Loved that it was also close walking distance to a few restaurants and shops. We really enjoyed Backlot coffee in the morning. The condo itself was very cozy and very spacious and creatively decorated. The last few days of our stay it got pretty hot outside, but the AC window units kept the condo very cool and comfortable. John is a very responsive host. He would respond right away if we had any questions or concerns. Street parking was easy and always available for the duration of our stay. Just watch the no parking signs, as there are specific times where parking is restricted due to street cleaning. Also, this unit is on the top floor of a 4 unit condo building. So, make sure you can manage the stairs.Overall, a very comfortable stay. Would totally rent here again should we need a space in Evanston.
Quiet neighborhood in Evanston. A nice property for 3 people who stayed there. It was convenient location in between northern suburbs and downtown Chicago where we had to visit.
We very much enjoyed our stay at The Arnold. Beautiful furnishings, well stocked kitchen and a quiet block that’s walking distance to coffee shops and restaurants. It was the perfect location for my family to either travel into the city or visit family in the northern burbs. Thanks John, you made us feel very welcome.
We very much enjoyed our stay in the apartment and felt right at home. John and Amy are welcoming and attentive hosts and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The location is terrific--walking distance to the local district with cute shops and restaurants. The apartment was large, well-equipped, and comfortable. Definitely recommend!
This is our 2nd time staying in the very large, 3bd, 2 bath, 3rd floor unit. We've also stayed twice in the smaller garden apartment. You can't beat the location -- 1 block off the shopping district of Central St, and 1 block to the Metra to go downtown (or a handful of blocks to the "el" . And a 20 min walk to the beach. Perfect! John is a great host and totally responsive to any needs.
The property comfortable, hip and vintage. The neighborhood was great with tons of cool spots to eat and cafes all within walking distance. Also very close to public transportation if you want to visit the city. Great spot.

Excellent
This summer we took a four week vacation in Evanston to be closer to our daughter and grandchildren. The Arnold was a perfect choice. It was within walking distance of the grandchildren and even closer, when we had time off, to restaurants, shops and parks. The apartment was spacious, clean, quiet, safe; in short, everything we were looking for. We will certainly be back.

Great Temporary Home During Remodel
We stayed here for a few weeks while our kitchen was being remodeled. Our family of four (two elementary school age kids, two adults) really enjoyed our stay. The apartment is very clean and well stocked with essential supplies in all areas, the decorations and art are very interesting/fun and the neighborhood is awesome for folks interested in seeing the sights/living daily life on foot. John is a great host and was in touch throughout our stay whether just saying hello as we came and went, or addressing any questions or concerns we had. We would recommend it for both vacationers and for others like us who are looking for a more long-term, yet fully-furnished rental solution.

Excellent stay in Harrison Evanston
We have spent two and a half months in John and Amy's apartment, first in Casita Reva and then the Arnold. Everything was magical; the neighborhood, the apartments, the location of the house and the hospitality of John and Amy. We will definetly return back to Harrison Evanston. Thanks for making our summer unforgettable and thanks for making us feel home in Evanston.

very nice condo in very nice part of Evanston
John and his wife are very hospitable and this condo worked out very well for my family. We were in town for a tennis camp. Lots of room and the place was very clean. Each child had their own room and large living room to relax. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

About the host
Hosted by John Fell
I’m a lifelong North Shore resident with a real passion for this community and all it has to offer. When we travel, we love finding off-the-beaten-path accommodations that feel authentic and personal — and that’s exactly the kind of experience we want to share with our guests.
We’ve been hosting since 2011 and enjoy welcoming visitors who appreciate Evanston’s charm and character.
Note: We also offer two additional VRBO rentals — Casita Reva (listing #374086), a one-bedroom in the same building, and Colfax Cottage, a nearby two-bedroom.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this neighborhood for its perfect mix of character, convenience, and community. It’s a quiet, tree-lined pocket of Evanston where everything feels close — cafés, parks, shops, and the lake are all just a short walk away.
Central Street is the heart of it: filled with independent restaurants, boutiques, and friendly locals, it captures the best of small-town charm within a short train ride to Chicago.
We love that you can bike to the lakefront, grab coffee from a local roaster, or catch the Metra downtown — all within minutes. It’s the kind of neighborhood where life moves at just the right pace.
What makes this property unique
The Arnold stands out for its soulful character and thoughtful design. Set on the third floor of a classic Evanston building, it combines the warmth of a century-old apartment — with original details, antique furnishings, and eclectic art — with the comforts of modern living.
Guests love the light-filled atmosphere and the flexible layout, featuring a cozy office/den that doubles as a guest room. And the location couldn’t be better — just a short walk to Evanston’s Central Street shops, cafés, and Lake Michigan beaches, yet peaceful and residential.
It’s a place that feels authentic, personal, and distinctly Evanston — a home with real history and heart.
