LOCATION
It's an easy drive to the picturesque village of Guilford, with its stunning town green and colonial homes, including the oldest stone house in New England (1638). Farmers' markets, fabulous coffee shop (Cilantro’s), shops, lovely seafood restaurants (Lenny’s in Branford is a favorite) and a local lobster pound.
Near beach towns like Madison and Branford. (The tiny shore town of Stony Creek is really charming, is about a 10 minute drive, and has a sweet ice cream shop and daily tours of the Thimble Islands.) Yale University and New Haven are close. Convenient transport (Metro North or Amtrak to New Haven; and the Shoreline East to Guilford). 20-25 minutes to New Haven. It's about 2 1/2 hours from NY depending on traffic, an hour and a half from Providence and Newport, and roughly 4 hours to Boston. Ample space for off-street parking (which is rare in the neighborhood).

AMENITIES
Wood-burning Fireplace. Washer/Dryer, Dishwasher. Air Conditioning in main room and both bedrooms. WiFi, TV. Lots of books for adults and kids, plus board games and a relaxing hammock out back in the yard.

ACTIVITIES:
Plenty to do in the surrounding area, from hiking to tennis to antiquing and spa-ing. Boat tours of Stony Creek and the Thimble Islands just 10 minutes away.
The wonderful R Julia bookstore and the Hammonnasset State beach are in next-door Madison, plus ice cream stands, lobster shacks etc etc—very ye olde New England.
Easy push-button lock entry. (Will provide code pre-arrival plus all info in the ‘house book’ in kitchen and basics listed on fridge.)

Great stay!
We spent the month of August in this charming house and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was immaculately clean, with comfortable beds and seating arrangements, and all the necessary cooking staples. The grandchildren especially enjoyed combing the beach across the street for little crabs and seashells. There is plenty to do in Guilford and the adjacent towns and beaches. The hostess, Laura, was very accommodating when we dithered about dates! We will certainly come again. Thanks for a great stay.

Great spot, lovely home
The cottage is lovely, clean and more than adequately stocked with everything you need. The local beach was a great place to spend the day and the upper deck provides amazing views. There was more than enough room for our family of 4. We were able to easily make meals with the fully stocked kitchen. The a/c has trouble reaching the bunk room so it can be a bit warm. This is a place we would definitely stay again.

Awesome stay at The Cove
Our family rented this beautiful house for a week stay and completely enjoyed our time there. We walked, kayaked, and soaked in the views, the flowers, and abundant wildlife. So serene! We would love to return!

Wonderful retreat!
Though we didn't travel far to get here, we felt we were truly on vacation, beautiful sunsets and steps from the beach - thank you!

*THE COVE* has been in my family since the early 1990s. It was my parents' "weekend home" from New Haven, where my father was a Yale prof.
We've gradually restored and updated it over the years, bringing our kids up for many summers with their grandparents and friends.
It’s a house filled with love and memories. We adore sharing it with friends, families and friends-to-be. Please enjoy it and fill out our guest book!
NB: Although we have done academic rentals in the past we’re now doing only shorter stays (and please contact us about limited — ie less than a week — rentals around holidays or Yale events like graduation. Those are higher nightly rates than usual (as are the high summer months). Thanks.

Why they chose this property

It’s in a classic beach community that feels almost stuck in time — in a good way. Very communal and there are ongoing Association activities like the annual 4th of July parade, sports day at the beach, cookouts etc. The beach is super-close and almost feels like a swimming hole in the summer.
Fall is also a beautiful time to visit, with leaf-peeping, hikes and plenty to do — or not (think scrabble, fire, reading etc.)

What makes this property unique

Great for getting away from it all while still being 20 minutes from New Haven and just over an hour from Providence (and RISD/Brown U) depending on transport.

Not a bad drive from NYC or Boston.

Ferries are relatively nearby, going to Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons just across the Sound.

The local Shoreline East commuter train leaves New Haven’s Union train station at a regular clip and costs less than $5.

Easy 20 minute, $20ish Uber/Lyft ride from New Haven’s Union Station and equally easy MetroNorth New Haven line trip from NYC Grand Central Station if people need to come at different times. (Slightly more expensive Amtrak lines run the NE corridor from NYC or Boston through Union Station and Providence too.) It took us a while to figure out how proximate everything is.

Uber/Lyft/cabs operate in Guilford proper but can be a little slow.

Buses are available to and from Union Station from NYC or cities like Providence.

NH Union Station is basically a transportation hub.

Hartford and Providence International Airports are also a doable drive (hour and a half) or you can even get an Uber or cab ride (at least in our experience; not prohibitively expensive in a pinch) in case of tricky transportation situations.
