About this property

Large Home With Lovely Gardens Short Walk To Main Street STR22-26

Large home and quiet street, with Parlor, Library, Dining Room, Kitchen and full bath on first floor, four Bedrooms, Sitting Room and Sewing Room, one full and one 1/2 bath on second floor. Small lot with lovely gardens. If you have seen the movie In The Bedroom you have seen our house.

Short walk to restaurants, art galleries, shops on Main Street and harbor. Short drive to good hiking and mountain biking. Good road rides right from driveway. Close to light houses and national wildlife refuge. We have two very friendly cats that we hope you would let in and out and feed. Our Airedale dog will be with us.

We also have five laying hens. If you would rather not deal with them, we have neighbors that will do so - no worries! The fresh eggs are amazing.

This is our home, not a rental property. It is probably a lot like yours is, not a pristine high end hotel.

We had a great time in Rockland! The house is a perfect location to walk to restaurants and shops.

The owners were extremely nice and left us lots of beautiful fresh flower arrangements from their garden—a very nice touch. Besides the ideal location, the house is rustic and charming. We made a big lobster feast and the kitchen is was easy to work in.

Great family home in Rockland

We had another great stay at this home. Perfect location within walking distance to downtown Rockland. We had everything we needed and were very comfortable. Great home for families and/or a group of adults. I especially enjoyed the cook's kitchen, with everything you might need to make a great family meal. Thanks again.

House was exactly what I pictured a house in Maine would be. You cant beat a place with fresh eggs every morning and fresh picked berries right out the back door. Perfect for walking to Lobster fest

We rented this house for 3 nights. We were 2 couples doing the Lobster Ride Bike (which was very nice). The location is perfect, walking distance from everything and the house is warm and welcoming as are the owners! We tend to agree with Jack G's review (July 17) regarding the fact that this home needs a little TLC. The kitchen is perfect to cook, we had a great dinner on Saturday night. Still for a family or for couples travelling together, this house remains a more interesting option than a hotel. PS, the chickens adds a fun touch to this rental and the cats are very friendly!

Property Needs TLC

The owners are lovely people and the gardens, although a bit overgrown, are beautiful. The location is as convenient as described, and our little ones had a blast taking care of the chickens in exchange for their eggs. Our children also enjoyed making sure the cats had food and fresh water at all times. The child-oriented amenities -- like Air Hockey and Foosball and Legos and hundreds of games -- were much appreciated. All of us also enjoyed the countless books in every nook and cranny and the truly "lived in" feeling of the property. However, there are currently two problems with this rental -- both of which can be remediated. First, there are unfinished projects everywhere. For example, a half bath was only half painted, and several of the rooms were only partially re-plastered. Second, the owners' personal effects were everywhere, including in every drawer in every dresser, so there was no place to put our things. We literally had to stack our belongings in piles on top of the dressers. In sum, with some TLC to the physical plant and some accommodation for renters' personal effects, this place could be a wonderful escape back to the 19th Century close enough to downtown Rockland to get the "best of both worlds." By this review we are not discouraging future renters. Instead, we are encouraging the owners to address the shortcomings that can readily be addressed so that this property can be a stable source of additional revenue for them as well as a great place for travelers to rent. In closing, we wish the owners the best of luck.

Thank you for the feedback. We are very glad that your family enjoyed their stay. In response to your comment about dresser space - we have emptied drawers for future guests. We certainly want to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We do provide a hanging rack for clothes as well. When we are not renting out our home, we reside here, so the "lived in" feel is in fact reality. That we live here also limits the amount of work we can do as far as updating the house, the original portion which dates back to 1825 and the newest portion to 1902. We plan on repainting the half-bath next week, as well as repair the plaster work in the library - an area hidden behind the upright piano. That entire wall will receive wallpaper this fall as part of a phased project to install built-in shelving. The first unit was finished this past spring. Despite this work, I will note that our house is very clean, with no evidence that construction projects have recently occurred. It is our goal to make every guest enjoy the same warmth and welcoming feel that we live with daily. GW
