Essay by Susan F. - an 85 year old guest

…an aerie hanging in the treetops above a lake…

From the Lakeside dock:

Truly. Toad Lake has polliwogs.

A brown duck (which?) dashes for brush-cover. Two tiny ducklings follow her. (Are they really running across the surface?) They leave spidery wakes.

Dragonflies hover, dart. Butterflies flutter, alight, open, close. Yellow Irises cluster.

A woman suns on an inner-tube. A woman swims laps. A man, standing in the lake, plays fetch-a-stick with two paddling dogs.

A kayaker. Another kayaker with a fishing rod.

On the far shore, any time of day, people are fishing. Slanting light makes colors fluorescent: blue (beach chair), orange (vest), red (SUV), all repeated upside-down in the lake surface.

Bald eagles glide high above. Another raptor (which?) soars.

Swallows (which?) are skimming.

Robins and song sparrows are singing everywhere. More birdsong. (Whose?)

Timeless northwest forest trees that taper, are mirrored on the lake’s surface as wavering blocks of modern art.

Eight Canada geese form a flotilla and head to the far shore, reconnoiter on land, then slowly make their way to the small decaying raft beside us on the pier. They nibble at the covering of green growth and then depart. The geese have left the raft unstable. Untethered, it floats slowly into the middle of the lake. And then, where?

An alligator (?) with brilliant gold eyes drifts to the middle of the lake, then hides on the far side. He is retrieved by kayak, - that thrilling, life-size, plastic alligator head that was meant to keep the geese away.

From the Dwelling:

Look down on the top-feathers of swallows (which?), turned golden in the sun.

Catch sight of two young bucks with furred stubs of antlers strolling down the driveway.

Later, read by lamplight in chairs before the fireplace. One book can be passed between the two of you to share, reading aloud.

Sleep on a queen-size perfect mattress.

Brew morning coffee and take the morning easy in

This spot was great, we loved the balcony and the lake access. It was fun that they had so many board games and floaties and kayaks. Only downsides is that the dishwasher and kitchen light don’t work. But we made do! Fun weekend!

Great location, and nice decks and porches to enjoy the lake view. Comfortable beds, and well equipped kitchen. Very responsive owners when we had questions or any issues. It is an older property, with a few things that need fixing (and owners said they are working on them) - kitchen overhead lights not working, and a faulty septic alarm. Upstair loft has small bathroom (watch your head!) but very convenient, and also a nice deck and a working PacMan video kiosk! Fairly convenient to Bellingham, yet you feel like you are out in the woods on a quiet lake. If you are in the upstairs unit (like we were) be ready for a lot of stairs to get up to the unit (good exercise). Tight parking out front, but it worked. We didn't have time to use the kayaks, but it looked easy to get them out on the lake, and it would have been fun.

Kitchen was fully equipped. Deck was very pleasant to sit and listen to birds and enjoy your coffee. Lake was closed for fishing which was not what we thought so we went to a different lake for our fishing. Lots of stairs up to residence.

It’s like visiting grandmas house- nostalgic, cozy, but neglected. The house is very cute, directly on the lake with private dock. Dock house is well stocked with plenty of kayaks, paddles, fishing gear (use worms and you’ll catch endless pumpkin fish right off the dock), and floaties for everyone to have a good time. The lake is GREAT FUN! Warm and small enough for no power vehicles, so the kids are safe to wander. The house is quaint Very cabin feeling and eclectic decor inside Well stocked and mostly clean. The house definitely feels like neglected rental. Which is a shame because it has so much potential. I alerted the host of a few of the issues we first noticed upon arrival including- lights in kitchen don’t work (had to cook with my iPhone light), dishwasher was broken, pull out bed was broken (host had mentioned and said there was a blow up bed in the closet to use instead), the chair seats on the balcony were worn threw they would almost give way. When I messaged the host, her response could have been interpreted as sarcastic and indifferent to the issues. But she did offer us an immediate check out with refund. The deck was covered in grease stains around the grill, and I’m pretty sure there is mold on the ceiling of the only bathroom with a shower. I have stayed in many house rentals, and most hosts seem to take great pride in providing a wonderful experience for their guests. KIDS LOVED THE LAKE. Hubby says we'd come back, but im not as sure.

Gorgeous, peaceful lake location with beautiful views, decks, balconies and big windows. Cozy cabin will all the amenities we could have asked for, including great boating equipment for the lake. Loved that this lake is non-motorized craft only and no driving around it, because it was all wildlife sounds and quiet for our weekend retreat.

I'm passionate in what I'm doing with the Emerald Lake Chalet.
When I read guest comments that they have enjoyed their stay and want to come back, that's very rewarding.

Why they chose this property

This property is one of a kind. Swimming and fishing at the door.

What makes this property unique

My family has owned property on Emerald Lake since 1960. It's been a great retreat for my six children and grandchildren as well as our friends. Bellingham is minutes away where many activities, shopping and gourmet restaurants add to the wonderful lake setting apart from city life.
