Modern Farmhouse: Heart of the Jocko Valley, 23 Minutes From Missoula
We bought the modern farmhouse about 20 years ago when it wasn't so modern. Over the years, we've built fences, added walls and taken a few down. Most recently, we remodeled the whole place inside and out. The house is bright, roomy and comfortable with mountain views out every window. We got married in the pasture out back, our daughter was born here and we’ve always found a bit of magic in this place. We hope you'll find that magic too!
Specifics: Bedrooms The modern farmhouse has two bedrooms. The first is downstairs and has two cozy and comfortable single beds. This room has views of an old rock barn with mountains beyond. The second bedroom is upstairs with a memory foam queen bed with views of the hills in the distance, tall evergreen trees and a 100-year-old lilac tree. There are two additional sleeping spaces one in the main living room on the ground floor and one in the upstairs den. Other spaces: The living room is bright and comfortable with two arm chairs and an L-shaped couch. This couch pulls out into a full bed to accommodate extra guests. The dining room features a handmade table with seating for eight and views of Graywolf Peak. The kitchen is gloriously big with big windows, stainless modern appliances and a cafe table for two perfect for morning coffee or evening wine. There is one bathroom with a shower/tub combination, a low-flow toilet and two vanities with sinks and mirrors. Upstairs, there is a den with another fold out couch, books, books and more books, and a flatscreen Roku TV. Outside and facing one of the prettiest views around, our back deck has a patio table with chairs for outdoor dining and other chairs to sit, relax and enjoy the view.
A note on dogs: We love dogs. We own two poorly behaved puppies but when we bring them to the Modern Farmhouse we either keep them leashed or under flawless, strict voice command. We ask you to do the same for the safety of our neighbors’ livestock and for the safety of your dogs. It’s actually legal for a rancher to shoot a dog that’s chasing his or her cows. Harsh but a true fact of the rural west.

A note on place: Arlee, Montana sits on the Flathead Indian Reservation. It's a small western town with a mix of cultures and a serious high school basketball dynasty. American Indians, ranchers, Buddhists, hippies and some folks who fit in all of the above categories – some none -- live here and a few folks like us live here because we think it's pretty. In this valley you’ll find human complexity in all its grandeur! Arlee Wilson’s, downtown on Highway 93 North, is a gas station/small grocery store.

We had a wonderful stay at this property. The location was gorgeous and we wished we were staying longer. The house and property were better than described and the host was friendly, responsive, and professional. We hope to stay here again one day!
We had a wonderful time at the farmhouse. It is in a lovely location and nicely secluded. It was nice to get away from the city and enjoy the peace and quiet this property offers. Will definitely be back!
Cute farm house with plenty of room for large family
Nicely renovated and appointed old farmhouse. Minor hiccup getting into the house--access code was changed last minute, which led to some late-night confusion and frustration getting into the house--and the upstairs double bed wasnt ideal (a futon that barely fit two small preteens)--but overall a great place to stopover on a long road trip. Would definitely stay here again.
This is a peaceful little place that offers plenty of things to keep the kids busy, is removed from town without feeling too isolated. We had a lovely campfire while the kids played in the tree house. We have a toddler which did require a watchful eye as there are some tricky stairs in and around the place as well as a small stream on one edge of the property, which also added to the charm. Accommodations are modest but cozy and more than sufficient. Would recommend to anyone.
Only snag we encountered is the deadbolt lock battery was dead. I reached out to the host who immediately called and remedied us we were in the home within 5 minutes.
Spactiuos and sleeps many. I have no complaints.
Excellence.
Cute place perfect for our overnight stay as we were passing through the area!
The driveway was every bit a rough as was described in the listing- any car or van would have trouble, good thing we had an SUV and a truck.
There were not pellets available for the stove, which was a bit disappointing, but we made due.
Loved the cool wood spiral staircase!
Beautiful property/views to wake up to, but also wish there were curtains/blinds for privacy.
All said, beautiful place and would recommend to anyone in that area!
This is a cute home nestled back from the road. The road can be a little rough, but with the location it’s to be expected. The no curtain/no privacy thing was a little odd for us big Texas city folk, but once we realized that only the cows were within viewing distance, it really was no big deal. I was every morning by the two horses next door. The creek that runs through the property was absolutely charming and the little hidden creek visitor was a nice touch. We also found a fantastic coffee shop up in Arlee (Black Bear Expresso) that we visited daily.
10/10 would recommend.
This is a wonderful place in a great location. I do have a few suggestions, though. On our first day we found several pots and pans that appeared to be put away unwashed or badly washed. It may be better to require guests to load unwashed dishes in the dish washer upon check out instead of have them put away "washed". This way the property owner/care taker has control over the cleanliness of the dishes. Just a suggestion. This little mishap did not diminish the great experience we had at the house.
We had a great time at this beautiful old farmhouse. We especially enjoyed exploring the property and looking at the old barns, the treehouse, the small creek, etc. The inside was perfect for our needs. Loved the staircase and all of the details that made it feel like a comfortable home. Will definitely be back.
What a treat! We stayed here for a night after traveling to Montana from Charleston and happily would have stayed longer. The property was magical and our children ages 3,5, & 7 fell in love as did we. Such a great kick off to our two week Montana adventure and would def rent this gem again
Stayed with family for a few nights on the way from Glacier to Yellowstone. It was fantastic. The property has a real sense of place, beautiful sunsets which were one of the highlights of our stay and was really clean. Easy, 20 minute drive into Missoula on big roads, but felt very ,very far away in the best way possible
This is my second time staying at this extremely peaceful property! It is the most private VRBO I have ever stayed in. The check in/check out process was a breeze. It was a very well stocked, creatively decorated, quintessential farm stay.
This quaint little house is decorated absolutely perfectly! Each room looks like an interior design photo op and every window presents a mountain view. What a darling place to stay! Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to come again.
It is important to note that it is pet friendly home and there was quite a bit of hair but other than that it was perfect.
While we only stayed one night while passing through, this place is exactly what we were looking for. Spent the morning watching the neighbors horse and donkey grazing the meadow and thoroughly appreciated the land and views.
A farmhouse first and foremost, but a nice retreat to a small town with a friendly vibe. Our stay was for 2 nights and we had kids that wanted to sleep nearby so we ended up all in the upstairs bedroom area and found it rather tight but doable. The summer sun woke us up early and we went our for coffee and breakfast and enjoyed watching cows and horses graze in the nearby pastures. A fun sight for us! Appreciated the extra linens and stocked bathroom amenities. We visit the area annually and the location works for us. Thanks for sharing your space and we look forward to our return visit!
Perfect little modern farmhouse. We never even turned the TV on. Can’t wait to bring our 3 kids back in the summer. The owner was easily accessible and super nice. There are beautiful views in every direction and within minutes to the nearest town. We can’t wait to stay here again.
We really enjoyed our stay. The location is very peaceful and the accommodations comfortable. The train is not close and was never disruptive as some other reviews indicate. The driveway was well maintained even for snowy winter conditions and the house was easy to keep warm with the pellet heater and other wall heaters. I would highly recommend.
The modern farmhouse rental was a beautiful space with everything we needed to make a dinner for friends. The property was very pretty and surrounded by acres of farm land. Overall, a great experience and place to stay. The only thing I would mention is that we went during the winter and the road to the farmhouse was very bumpy and icy (which was mentioned in the description), but consider using a car that can handle some of those deeper bumps in the road.

Beautiful place.
When we arrived they had the fire going in the pellet stove lights turned on very cozy atmosphere. We would come back again.
Had a great time at the farmhouse! Beautiful location and the house was adorable. Great sized kitchen and bathroom with all the basics. Clean and easy to find with instructions from the host. Easy drive to the airport and Missoula. Some noise from the road/trains, but the views are beautiful. Would absolutely rent again!

My husband and I moved to Missoula 20 years ago for a one-year job in a van packed with books. We never left. We've lived on a farm surrounded by fallen down fences where we had our two daughters. We've lived in the heart of Missoula in a tiny house with our daughters, two dogs and a wayward bunny. After ten years of farm life and two amazing years of living tiny, we want to share both of these spaces with travelers like you. We love our town, our community and our homes. We hope you will too.
Why they chose this property
The Modern Farmhouse has breathtaking views in a rural setting just 23 minutes from all that Missoula has to offer.
What makes this property unique
COVID-19 UPDATE What a crazy few years here in the pandemic! We wanted to let you know we are adjusting to the some-times daily changes that have come with hosting during the time of COVID-19. We’re adapting and learning every day and doing everything we can to keep our guests and our family safe.
We’ve committed to strict cleaning guidelines set forth by Airbnb and VRBO. We’ve displayed the checklist Airbnb created to let you know the cleaning measures we are adhering to during this time. Please let us know if you have any questions.
An important note about our tribal communities: The Modern Farmhouse sits on the Flathead Indian Reservation. American Indian populations are particularly susceptible to COVID-19, especially elders. When a tribe loses an elder, generations of knowledge and culture die with them. We’re glad you’re here but we ask that you do everything possible to protect this community. This means: • Collect your groceries in Missoula • Buy gas in Missoula • Limit stops on the reservation to those that are absolutely necessary • Wash your hands if you do have to stop • Respect that the residents of this reservation are still under a stay at home order
