About this property
Retro-Modern Cabin in the Pines
Greybeard is a custom-built vacation home on a private, ½-acre wooded lot. This unique property was completely rebuilt in 2015 and has been upgraded to include every modern comfort & technology, while keeping its classic1980s charm.
There's abundant natural light and air -- every room has several windows and/or skylights. Surrounding the house on three sides are over 750 ft² of illuminated boardwalks, stairways, and wood decks that seem to float out into the forest. Forced-air central heat and A/C, double-glazed windows, insulating open-cell privacy blinds, and foam insulation ensure year-round comfort.
On the main level is a roomy kitchen and dining area that can accommodate from 2-6 guests and overlooks the multi-level rear deck. In the soaring living room, sink into the leather furniture and enjoy a built-in entertainment system with 55" LG Smart TV and fiber-optic WiFi. Easy plug-ins if you choose to use your own streaming or gaming device. And stream music from your own Bluetooth device on the soundbar. Spend an evening curled up in front of the cozy, eco-friendly electronic fireplace.
The downstairs bedroom is in its own wing with direct access to the rear deck. This amazing sanctuary has 6 windows and a skylight, yet remains completely private even when the blinds are open. Custom built cabinets provide plenty of storage. The Stern & Foster pillow top queen mattress delivers a great night's sleep and a ceiling fan.
Up the circular staircase, you'll find another amazing bedroom that overlooks the treetops. This light-filled aerie has a queen-size Tempur Pedic adjustable mattress, a 32" Samsung "The Frame" Smart TV. Easy plug ins if you choose to use your own streaming or gaming device, an opening skylight, a custom-built desk and closet.
The spacious bathroom has under-floor heating, a large walk-in shower, and vanity. (Please note that the bathroom is adjacent to the kitchen.)
There's off-street parking for three vehicles.
Just steps from the door is a little-known open space with over 600 acres of pine forest, wildlife, and hiking trails with views of the Swan Mountains and Glacier National Park in the distance.
A large store, coffee hut, and gas station are just four blocks away; Super 1 and Safeway supermarkets are a 10-minute drive. Historic downtown Whitefish is a short 10 minute drive, Big Mountain Ski Area is 20 minutes, Glacier National Park is 30 minutes, Glacier International Airport is 15 minutes, and the North Kalispell shopping area (Costco, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, etc.) is 10 minutes south.
For your comfort and security, a home automation system provides keyless PIN entry, programmable central heat & air conditioning, automated exterior lighting, a programmable safe for valuables and smoke/Co2 alarms.

Thanks for your kind words Christine. I'm glad you enjoyed the property and hope to see you again in the future!
We absolutely loved staying here. It was the cleanest rental I’ve ever had. The location is perfect - easy access to the highway to get to the park, with both downtown Whitefish and Kalispell close by. The property owner was very nice and made checking in/out a breeze. Next time we’re in Montana, we’ll be looking to stay here again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house was everything we expected and more! This was the most "smart" place we have ever stayed. This was the perfect home base for Glacier National Park. Can't wait to come back and visit!

The house was beautiful and well-stocked. We would be happy to stay again and were sad to leave.
Stayed here for a 5 day Montana getaway. Property is better than described. Location is great. Cabin is even better! Would recommend this property to anyone going to the Whitefish area.
Updated, clean, well stocked, and comfortable. Great host. Stayed for a quick ski trip. Perfect little house for my friend and I. The only thing that would make it better is a hottub out on the deck. Would for sure stay again!
This is a wonderful remodeled home and if you are considering staying here, do not worry and go ahead and book it! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here for our trip to GNP. The house is super clean, modern, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. I would book this again in a minute! Tom was great to work with and I thank you again for letting us stay in your lovely home!
The cabin was absolutely beautiful! It’s located in a quiet neighborhood and a quick 30 mins to GNP. Super clean and high end amenities. Great place to relax after a day of hiking and just a few minutes to historic Whitefish where you can find a lot of restaurants and shopping. Tom is a wonderful host and we will definitely book here again on our next trip!!

Thanks Quinn and Tanya! I'm glad Greybeard could be your home away from home. There really is no better compliment.

We loved everything about the property. Its in a nice quiet neighborhood and not a bad drive to Glacier. Very close to downtown Whitefish and Kalispell. The place was very clean. Loved having a deck to sit on at night.
If I am ever in the area again, I would definitely stay here again.
This cabin could not be any more perfect. It was exceptionally clean. The kitchen was well appointed with everything needed for cooking a full meal. The beds were the most SOOO comfortable. Communication with the owner was always easy. Thank you for allowing us to rent your cabin. We highly recommend and would love to come back.
Stayed here on a road trip to Glacier National Park. Scenic and quiet drive to the park and other activities we wanted to partake in as well as downtown whitefish. Beautiful little cabin that was in a quiet neighborhood. Patio was great for having dinner with great views after a long day or in the morning where we got to see some turkeys. The house was very clean and had instructions for everything along with all the amenities we looked for. Would stay here again!
House was perfect for the two of us. Good location near to the park in a nice quiet neighborhood. The house was well thought out and was very comfortable. Very clean. Well stocked with towels and appliances in the kitchen.
Perfect accommodation for me and my wife to enjoy our vacation to GNP and surrounding area. The home is everything as represented. Clean, cozy, comfortable and close to everything you want to visit .... Whitefish, Kalispell, and of course GNP. Thanks again Tom.
Enjoyed our stay, the house was convenient for what we had planned. Kitchen was well stock and the house was very clean. Perk of the walkways being shoveled for us in the morning. Appreciated the responsiveness of the manager.
It seems like every detail of the property has been well thought out and planned. The automation and tec seems like lots could not work right, but everything was flawless. Place was clean and cozy. Privacy is decent considering it’s in a populated area the neighbourhood was super quite.
We loved everything about the property! It was clean, cozy, and well located. The owner was easy to get ahold of and responded quickly to any messages. Just a heads up, the entrance and parking are actually through the alley behind the house. GPS will take you to the front which was a little confusing because there was no entrance there. Once I went around back, there was a very nice parking area and super cute entrance.

Absolutely beautiful and well equipped!
We are outdoor enthusiast and spend a lot of time skiing and hiking. This house was right in the middle of it all! Trails and skiing galore. I was also happy to be close to the grocery store and the movie theater. The house its self was beautiful and had every thing we wanted. I can't wait to come back to stay in the summer to hike Glacier National Park. We already made our reservations.

Thanks for visiting Greybeard and for leaving it so sparkling clean! Could barely tell anyone had even been there.
A lot of effort did go into making the house a nice place that people will want to come back to again, and we look forward to seeing you for that summer hike!
About the host
Hosted by Tom Dietrich
I spent 30 years in the hospitality industry, starting in Yellowstone National Park and eventually working all over the world, before settling back down in Montana. I'm really excited to be able to share my amazing small house and the big, beautiful state of Montana with you!
Why they chose this property
I bought this property 20 years ago after falling in love with it at first sight. It's small and quirky, and the original owners were obsessed with over-building everything. It suited me perfectly!
I moved out of the area for work, and the house became a long-term rental until 2014. Renovating the house took more than 1½ years, everything except the foundation and studs was replaced. Most of what you see today was done by me personally.
Because it's a smaller house, a lot of design and effort went into making the best use of the available space, without making drastic structural changes.
What makes this property unique
The location is central to downtown Whitefish, Kalispell, and Glacier NP. The property is in a quiet residential neighborhood with easy access to the main highway, but it feels more like a remote mountain cabin.
Despite the wooded hillside setting, I've tried to create a more sophisticated and contemporary vibe than you'll typically find in Whitefish vacation rentals. A lot of extra attention and expense was given to ensure maximum comfort, convenience, and security.
Unique to this area is a 600-acre forest preserve that's literally across the street from the house. You can wander for hours on easy trails without seeing another person. There are fantastic views of the Swan Range and the peaks in Glacier NP from here. Don't be surprised if this is the discovery and highlight of your trip!
