Mountain Retreat in Magical Setting with Heated Pool and Beautiful Garden
A beautiful house nestled in its luxuriant garden, with a large saltwater pool and two separate cottages providing flexible accommodation for up to fourteen people, all in the magical setting of Monchique Mountain, with stunning views across the foothills to the coast beyond.
Established over fifty years ago, Casa Ginjeira enjoys one of the mountain’s prime locations, in a peaceful south-facing valley, yet close to the local amenities. The house is set in a large garden surrounded by olive and citrus groves and ancient terraces that are still traditionally farmed, against a backdrop of cork oak forests. While sitting on the veranda or by the pool you will be able to relax in total seclusion, and yet the nearest restaurant is actually a short walk away, up a country track. Monchique is the perfect holiday location. The region is popular with walkers, cyclists and lovers of nature, as well as people who come for the gastronomic specialities of the area. The numerous excellent restaurants specialise in black pork dishes as well as favourites such as chicken piri-piri. You needn’t miss out on any of the famous beaches of the Algarve, as both the south and west coasts are equally accessible from our house, and when you return, the countryside provides a green refuge from the busy resorts.
The pretty market town of Monchique is just 4km away, with more restaurants and bars and a large supermarket. Further afield you have the choice of two coastlines within easy reach; the glamorous and busy South, or the wild and spectacular West, with world class surfing. There are many famous golf courses also within easy reach. There are also historic towns, and miles of empty lanes that wind around the valley to be explored. Wherever you go it is a pleasure to return to our peaceful valley.
When you first arrive you come to the large courtyard, with a typically Portuguese pavement of marble mosaics in a wavy pattern depicting lemons. To the side is a high retaining wall of beautiful granite stones, broken by a waterfall that trickles into a basin. This is the rock that the mountain is made from, and everywhere the slopes have been formed into wide terraces, mostly by manual effort without machinery, to create the food-basket of the Algarve, where the rich fertile soil is watered by numerous streams.
The feathery leaves of some mature jacaranda trees can be seen over the wall on the other side of the courtyard, their brilliant blue blossoms tempt you down into the garden below. When you look over it, you can see down into the first of many terraces that make up our garden, melding imperceptibly into the surrounding countryside, so that the neighbours’ donkeys, sheep and cows seem to be grazing on our land. The side of the house facing the courtyard resembles a traditional Portuguese country house, with decorative pediments in yellow ochre over the door and windows.
Casa Ginjeira retains the gracious style and comforts of an established home, with antiques and artworks collected over the years, whilst it has recently been thoroughly modernised with new bathrooms and beautiful terracotta floors which are heated when required and cool in the summer. The sitting room is furnished for comfortable evenings around the log fire, and has modern entertainment systems as well as a host of books. The well-equipped kitchen, decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles, opens onto the dining room, with a large dining table of African hardwood. The main house has two bathrooms with baths and walk-in showers and four spacious bedrooms all with terracotta tiled floors and enough space for a desk, an armchair, and other comforts that make a bedroom more appealing. All the rooms have french windows, with louvred shutters, that open onto the wide veranda, giving the house a colonial feel. With the french windows open and the curtains drawn to let in the breeze, the rooms are kept cool by the shade under veranda’s pretty tiled roof, and their high ceilings with ceiling fans ensure the air circulates within. Air conditioning is available in all the bedrooms.
Further accommodation is provided by the 60 sq.m. Pool Cottage. A double bedroom on a mezzanine has an ensuite shower bathroom, and below this a further shower bathroom and a large open-plan living area with underfloor heating, a full size kitchen and enough seating around the open fire for twelve, or alternatively to bed-down two extra people. The Pool Cottage would be ideal for a couple who want to be a little separate from the rest of the house, or a family with young children, the single beds being futon-style sofas under the mezzanine.
The 10x5metre swimming pool is built behind the main house so as not to spoil the peace of the garden in front. It is on the level of the rooftop, and so it also enjoys magnificent mountain views. You reach it by climbing a flight of curved steps in the courtyard. It has plenty of places to sunbathe between dips, and shares its broad terrace with four olive trees, which also provide the shade for another place to eat. There is a large built-in barbecue with a sink and running water. At the other end of the pool is the Pool Cottage with its kitchen, so you can easily prepare the food close by.
There is a house cat, called Baby, who is very cute and friendly. We ask if you can feed her during your stay. Cat food will be left for you. Thank you thank you thank you!
The extended season ensured with underfloor heating inside the house is also extended to the swimming pool, which is heated by a heat pump powered by our own solar electricity. From April to October pool heating is included in the price of your rental. This is a great benefit, as many holiday rentals charge extra for pool heating.
Above the pool is a decked area surrounded by flowerbeds providing another place to relax on sun-loungers under grapevines clambering over a rustic pergola. Our large garden has many more places to relax; in a hammock slung between jacaranda trees; amidst lavender and olive trees; or way down in the orange grove, where you can gather armfuls of sweet juicy fruit. Water runs through the garden in a rill, the air is cooled by fountains and waterfalls, and there is a large semicircular fish pond presided over by a garden spirit sculpted into the wall.
The garden extends down the valley, and a natural spring wells up forming a stream that falls into a pond surrounded by watercress.
Wherever you wander in the garden you will always return to the veranda, which is an outdoor room with many uses; enjoy lunch around the dining table in the shade; take a siesta in one of the recliners; watch the valley fill with golden sunlight as you take drinks in the evening and at night gaze up at the sky filled with countless stars.

We had a wonderful stay! The house was beautiful, spotless, and equipped with everything we needed. The terrace offered an amazing view, and it was the perfect place to relax. We were a group of 7 adults and 2 kids, and there was plenty of space for everyone. Communication with the host was smooth and easy throughout our stay. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend it!
Have just got back from my stay at Casa Ginjeira and I have nothing but positives to say. Communication prior, during and after was fantastic. The property itself is genuinely breathtaking, well beyond any expectations I had before arrival. Property was clean and held a lot of character. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic views. Pool was well maintained and a pleasant temperature. There is no air con in the main house - but with the rooms being at the front of the house, we found it was plenty cool enough for just the ceiling fan. Plenty of parking options, the only element that needs some bravery is the drive up the mountains. Will definitely be back!
We had the most amazing family holiday. Everything and more was available at the property. If you fancy yourself as a budding chef there is every kitchen implement you will need to prepare a gourmet dinner. There are also some great restaurants nearby and in the local towns. Everything from real tradition Portuguese country food to contemporary dishes. The accommodation is great for a large family and the use of the detached pool cottage allows for that bit of space away from the crowd when needed. The location and views are stunning and the pool is an amazing location for a refreshing dip and an evening BBQ. You can explore the huge gardens and relaxing water features and find something new from every stroll. We will be making plans to return to this fabulous homely spot very soon.
We fell in love with this property just based on the photos but once we were there, it was even more wonderful than we had hoped. It was beautiful, serene and welcoming. I am already looking for a way to book another stay. Thank you!
No cars, no planes, no trains. Beautiful views across green valley to the coast. If you seek peace and rest in a comfortable home that is cared for, this is for you.
If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in nature with all the comforts of a luxury home, this villa in the Monchique mountains is the perfect choice. It’s a place where you can truly unwind, create lasting memories with your family, and experience the beauty of the Algarve in its most serene form. We can’t wait to return!
Quiet and charming
Casa Ginjeira is in a quiet location yet close to Monchique and some nice restaurants. The villa oozes charm and is certainly not a sterile holiday home! We were not aware that the villa is so close to Foia (highest point of Serra De Monchique). The pool is heated which is a big plus at the end of summer!
We spent five glorious days in this magical villa in early September. The house is spacious, beautifully decorated and very well equipped. The grounds are absolutely stunning with numerous sitting areas and gardens. Communication with the owner and Eulalia, the property manager, was excellent. A bottle of wine and food essentials awaited us upon our arrival. We one hundred percent recommend this property.
Casa Gingjeira is quite simply stunning, a beautiful Villa set in the most tranquil location. The gardens are truly magical, a piece of paradise and with so many areas to relax in or pick oranges and make the sweetest of juices you will ever try. The Villa had all we needed and more and the heated swimming pool is perfect, difficult getting are four granddaughters out! Communication with Edmund and Eulalia was excellent any questions answered straight away. With all the personal touches around the villa it felt like a home but for a week it was our paradise.

Stunning!
We were a group of five friends and were unanimous about Casa Ginjeira - an outstanding and unique villa, which is far removed from the usual sterile places you can rent. Lots of personal touches, with flowers from the garden in many rooms, made the house seem more like a much loved home. We made good use of the beautiful and generous terrace and an equal amount of time in the fantastic swimming pool. Lots to see in the local area, we would very much like to return.

We are so delighted to hear that you had a good time and that you liked the house. We would be happy to welcome you back for another visit.
Renting this beautiful and cosy villa has been wonderful. The host was super friendly and cooperative in Covid-19 time. The villa has all the necessary equipment in the kitchen, digital to watch and (mobile) audio to listen, and gear for the beach to borrow. The separate house is really cosy, and there are many places in and around the house in the garden to relax. Kids have been active on the ping pong table, and have spend many hours in the pool. Lovely stay!
We really enjoyed our stay.First of all, the pictures are nice here but don't do justice to the stunning property at all since it looks even better in person. The house is spacious, the pool tidy and big enough. Also it's very calm ontop of the mountain - but you need a car, otherwise reaching Casa Ginjeira wouod nearly be impossible. Also make sure the car is fitted to drive the steep mountain in Monchique. We wholeheartedly recommend a stay at the location if you seek a quite, beautiful Holiday.Loved every bit of it.Oh, also if you can read a book in english, no need to bring one by yourself. There are hundreds of books for every taste - which we really appreciated :)
We had an unforgettable stay at Casa Ginjeira. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the charm, beauty, and thoughtful design of the home. Every room is tastefully decorated, full of character, and equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. The surrounding terraced gardens were enchanting, filled with blooming flowers, citrus and other fruit trees, the scent of rosemary and jasmine in the air, and little fountains, sculptures, and benches waiting to be discovered. We took daily walks and spent time unwinding in the garden, which quickly became one of our favorite parts of the stay. The pool was absolutely wonderful as well. Both Edmund, the owner, and Eulalia, the property manager, were warm, responsive, and welcoming throughout our time there.Thank you for sharing this gem of a home with us. We hope to return one day!
If you want to have a calm and relaxing holiday away from all the buzz, this is the place for you. When we arrived at Casa Ginjeira we were amazed. The house exceeded our expectations, and could easily accommodate all of us - 2 adults and 5 kids. The garden was beautiful and the veranda with its magic view overlooking the valley and sea was fantastic, just as the much loved pool and pool house (with bathroom!). They owner must have put a lot of love into the interior of the house. It felt very homey, and designed with good taste. The only downside were the beds, which were a bit too hard for our taste. But in all, we are just thankful that we were able to rent such a wonderful house in the most beautiful of surroundings.
Stunning location, great pool and beatiful gardens!
The villa is in a fantastic location in the hills, peaceful with wonderful views. The pool area and pool house are wonderful and the villa largely had everything we needed. The majority of the main villa and pool house are very clean and tidy and nicely put together and have been recently renovated. The kitchen and living space are a little tired in places but we still had a great time relaxing and cooking as a family. Most of the pool furnature could do with replacing, im sure it gets a lot of use! We will 100% be back. Our only suggestion is the addition of a few more gates (at the end of the balcony, top of the stairs by the pool) as we wouldnt suggest it for toddlers, we had a 1 year old with us and we would wait til he was a little older to return.
The four of us had such a great stay at Casa Ginjeira. The villa was just as described if not better! If one got tired of sitting on the porch looking at the view and listening to the birds, there was always the well equipped kitchen or snuggling by the fire. We were fortunate to have delightful weather in February and even had a couple of dips in the great pool. Every day it seemed more leaves and flowers burst open. Coming from frozen Canada made it especially good.
Are hosts made our arrival so generous and welcoming. Not only a bottle of wine but basics for breakfast. The caretaker, Eulália Was so available for our many questions and gave us great advice for local activities and food.
There were some issues with wifi that Eulália was trying to sort out.
Many thanks and we hope to return.
This is a unique, simply stunning property. It is one of those magical places that just makes you wish you could up sticks and spend the rest of your days there in serene, tranquil bliss! The owner could not have been more helpful from the initial communication to the lovely emails checking in on us to make sure we were happy. Not to mention the 25 pages of extremely useful information he sent before our arrival!
Eulália, the property manager, had left us general helpings of all the essentials in the fridge, as well as a welcome bottle of wine. The house is equipped with everything. Eulália is a delightful lady with a can-do attitude who speaks perfect English and checked in on us the next day.
Each room is beautifully furnished but in a loving, quirky rather than a sterile “Country Living magazine” kind of way. It is very obviously a family home with lovely touches everywhere. Most importantly, it is also extremely functional (sockets plentiful and in all the right places, lovely underfloor heating). We were also impressed with the environmentally conscious approach (it derives most of its electricity from its own solar panels, the pool is regulated with salt rather than chemicals etc).
The Pool Cottage stole our hearts - maybe because the house seemed almost wasted on two people alone. The house would be a perfect setting for a reunion with everybody gathering by the pool but also able to enjoy private time in one of the property’s numerous lovely hideaways. Pure magic!

I have been coming to Casa Ginjeira since I was a child. My wife Nedra first came to Casa Ginjeira first in 1988 with a bunch of friends; then we had our honeymoon here; we brought our sons here while they were still swaddled and now our sons have started coming with bunches of their friends. I am a writer and Nedra was a pathologist until she took early retirement in 2018 so that we could spend more time in Portugal in the winter, while still renting it our in the summer.
Why they chose this property
My parents first came to Portugal in 1968 and fell in love with the Monchique area. In 1970, whilst on a walk in the valley my father found a half-built house nestled on a magical site among cultivated terraces with stunning views to the coast. They bought the property and finished the building, employing 40 workmen including José with a winning smile, who stayed on as a gardener and still grows potatoes on our land for his own use. As a child I played with José's son Carlos, who is now the builder responsible for carrying out the great improvements of the recent years, and his daughter Euália is our manager. My parents decided to build a large pool above and behind the house so that their long naps were not disturbed by the sounds of my sister bullying me. My parents planted many trees including jacarandas and orange trees, which are all now fully grown.
What makes this property unique
Casa Ginjeira is ideal for a completely relaxing holiday of gentle strolls around the mountain, lazing by the pool and walking up to the local restaurant, but it is also ideally placed for venturing out, with easy access to the South and West coast. As well as taking trips to the sea, there are miles of empty lanes that wind around the valley to be explored on foot or on the bicycles that are for use of guests. There is underfloor heating throughout the house enabling a comfortable stay off-season. Our manager Eulalia will make sure your stay is perfect. She ensures you will arrive at a beautifully arranged and welcoming house. She speaks several languages and is a great fount of local information. Since both her brother and father are builders and have worked on the house, she can easily get any problems fixed, but more probably you will meet her when she comes to check on the pool and water the garden.
