About this property
Cosy Family Cottage In Rolling Country Near Beach - Sleeps 5
Burnside is a charming detached holiday cottage, built in the 1850s and tucked away off a quiet country lane.
The cottage opens on to enclosed front and back gardens, where you can bbq local meats abd lobster; or enjoy a drink while watching dozens of varieties of bird and wildlife. In the mornings, deer are often found grazing in the garden, while Yellowhammers sing from the hedgerows as the sun sets and Meadow Pipits trill overhead all day.
The kitchen is very well equipped, since we visit too for family holidays and we are keen cooks. It has a full range of utensils, sharp knives(!) and an expresso machine, as well as cafetieres, plenty of wine glasses and mugs. There is a dishwasher, microwave, electric hob and oven, washer/dryer. There’s also a log burner with free wood to keep it cosy in winter. Plus free wi-fi.
In 2022, we had a new bathroom fitted with powerful shower over the bath. It is a spacious bathroom with plenty of storage.
There are three lovely bedrooms with garden views - a double, a single and a twin room -- with two zip and link beds that can convert into a kingsize double.
Galloway’s glorious coastline is on your doorstep with many sandy beaches and rocky coves to explore.
We’re a great base for for walking (Southern Upland Way, Galloway Forest Park), cycling (7 Stanes Kirroughtree), golf (St Medans) and fishing (river, loch or sea). Plus bird watching (35 species and counting seen in the garden by visitors).
It's just over a mile from the fishing village of Port William (shop, cafe (serves beer) and takeaway).
All bed linen and towels are provided. Unfortunately, we're unable to take pets.

We were delighted with Burnside cottage. It was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the area
Excellent all round! Cottage and location - tucked into the peaceful countryside. Contemporary decor but still a cosy and welcoming space with lovely views of green hills. We had everything we needed and Charles couldn’t have been more helpful! We even saw the promised deer and little resident vole!
We had a fantastic week. Great prooerty everthing you need and more.
The cottage was very clean on arrival and the location is perfect. Our 2 grandsons loved how quiet it was and all the wildlife around about. Plenty to do and see for trips out and we would definitely recommend this property .
Just spent 3 fabby days at Burnside Cottage celebrating my husbands 50th birthday. Such a cosy cottage and in a beautiful location. Loved the views, the location and the cottage is really well equipped. Would love to return.

Thank you, Julie. Really glad you had a good stay.
This is a lovely, peaceful cottage, ideal for couples or families. There is plenty to do close by but you definitely need a car. Lots of beaches to visit. Check venues before you go, as a few were not open. Overall a lovely peaceful holiday.

Hi katherine, thank you so much for your kind review of our cottage. It is much appreciated. I am very glad you had a nice time. All best. Charles
A lovely family break to get away and relax. The cottage was perfect and just what we needed for a cozy getaway. It was plenty big enough for two adults and two teenage children to have the space they needed. The small kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed, we even made pancakes on Shrove Tuesday! We would highly recommend this cottage we had a lovely relaxing time and explored the nearby towns and distilleries.

Hi Emma, thanks so much for your lovely review and for being such excellent guests. I am so glad you and the family had a good time. We would love to have you back! All best. Charles
We enjoyed our stay at Burnside immensely. The cottage was very well equipped and very cosy and the perfect place to return to after a day exploring the beautiful surrounding areas. We saw deer and hares in the garden a few times which was exciting. Weather was good too. We will definitely consider returning next year.

Hi Suzanne, Thank you for your review. We really appreciate it. And I am very glad you had a nice time. Please do come back! All best. Charles
This gave us everything we were looking for. The cottage itself is well kitted out, and has everything that is needed, but the quiet county location is perfect.
Sited near the main road, but not close enough to be bothered by traffic noise, so you can get out and about easily, there are also walks from the door so that you can just leave the car and head out for the day.
My family and I have just enjoyed a wonderful week at Burnside cottage. It was just lovely.
There's nothing the owners haven't thought of.The cottage was so well equipped from cooking in the lovely kitchen, games night, movie night, bedding, towels etc absolutely everything was top quality and available.
The owners have also taken the time to put together a very compact folder, containing everything you could want to know about the area, things to do near by, directions etc
We all had a fantastic week and will definitely return.
Thank you.
Wonderful first stay in Scotland . The cottage is warm , welcoming, clean and has everything you need and more for a comfortable stay. It is in a fairly remote position with just a couple of properties in eyesight . So if your looking to engage with nature then this ideal . During our stay we woke every morning to 3 deer at the front of the property, we observed birds building their nests in the nesting boxes and watched various species of birds around the property. The cottage is an excellent base to explore the surrounding area such as the White Loch , Drumclodden stones and Port William all in walking distance .
We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage . Charles the owner left all the information for the property and places of interest nearby . We would definitely like to revisit in the near future .
Thank you Charles for a lovely stay

This cottage is in a quiet location a few miles from Port William. There are no other dwellings nearby, except a farm further along the lane. We saw a small group of deer twice in the garden in the early morning. The cottage is warm, comfortable and well equipped. It was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The host was friendly and helpful both before and after our stay. Dumfries and Galloway is an excellent area to holiday in. It is quiet and unspoilt, with woods, waterfalls, coastal walks and beaches. We saw grey seals and many birds, including gannets, egrets, herons, curlews, a peregrine falcon, red kites and buzzards. We would be happy to return to both the cottage and the area.
Lovely cosy, warm cottage. Well equipped with all you need for a great stay. Good communication with hosts who let us check out later. I particularly liked the 100% cotton sheets as sleep is better with cotton!

Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
Disappointed
So disappointed with the appearance outside and in. Marks on sofas, damp in many places, pillows on beds awful (we bought our own in Aldi) Horrible bottom table cloth, etc, etc.
Quiet location and very cosy cottage. Very easy to communicate with hosts. Manual with cottage info and walks, beaches, sights and restaurant suggestions very helpful. Bathroom (particularly the shower) could do with updating and dining chairs need replacing. But overall a very relaxing and enjoyable visit
The cottage was a perfect place to sty for our family of 5 - a great space, warm and well equipped. Galloway is beautiful, with loads to do, and we really appreciated the big information booklet which had ideas of walks, places to go and eat - a nice touch.
Had a brilliant 4 nights away.. looking forward to stopping there again in the near future
Great little get away in the great out doors

About the host
Hosted by Charles Walker
Our family has owned Burnside Cottage for more than 45 years. We spent our holidays there as children, and for many years it was used only by family and friends. A few years ago, our parents passed on the baton to us. It was time to fix the roof and refurbish the inside of the cottage. We have been letting the cottage since the improvements were completed in 2009. We still take our own holidays there, and a third generation of the Walker family now hike with us along the quiet country lanes, play poo-sticks in the stream, and are learning the names of the wildlife that continue to trek and fly through the garden. Charlie and Robert Walker.
