About this property
Gorgeous, quiet, and well situated homely pet friendly cottage
Welcome to “Smugglers Blues” – your perfect Cornish hideaway.
Tucked away in the peaceful heart of the famously picturesque and spirited fishing village of Fowey, this lovingly restored 18th-century granite cottage is the sort of place that feels like a secret worth sharing.
Perched quietly on Rose Hill, “Smugglers Blues” offers the best of both worlds: you're just a gentle 4-5 minute stroll from the vibrant village centre with its independent shops, friendly pubs, and waterside cafés yet far enough away to enjoy the calm, laid-back atmosphere that makes a holiday feel like a true escape.
Whether you're a devoted foodie or simply enjoy a good meal in good company, Fowey is a delicious destination. The Sunday Times recently named nine of the area's eateries in their "Best Places to Eat in Cornwall" list and there are many more worth discovering, from cosy wine bars to waterside seafood spots (you’ll find all our favourites in the house guide).
Inside, the cottage comfortably sleeps up to four guests across two charming bedrooms. But it’s the outdoor spaces that often steal the show especially the private, sun-kissed courtyard garden. It's a perfect little sun trap for lazy afternoon reading or unwinding with a glass of something chilled as the day fades into dusk. Thanks to the cottage’s unique aspect, you’ll enjoy sunlight from sunrise to sunset, ideal for those who like to chase the warmth.
Fowey itself is brimming with character and choices. Browse artisan shops, local galleries, and boutique stores, or simply take in the salty sea breeze along the harbourside. Dining options run from classic Cornish pub fare to award-winning cuisine, and once night falls, the village has a gentle buzz that invites you to linger just a little longer. (Just a heads-up: the walk back up Rose Hill may feel a little steeper after a few well-deserved sundowners!)
On the water, there’s no end of ways to enjoy the river and coastline—hop on the short ferry to Polruan, charter a boat, try your hand at fishing, or join in the local tradition of crabbing off the quay. And don’t miss Readymoney Cove, just a scenic 10-minute walk away, with breathtaking views along the way that are pure Cornwall.
For those occasional rainy days, you’ll find a great selection of books, board games, and an impressively stocked DVD collection—think everything from kids’ favourites to thrillers, rom-coms, vintage classics, rugby matches, and even a few surf movie gems. (Yes, Bond is here too.)
Whether you're here for the food, the sea air, the sunsets, or just a slow, beautiful break—“Smugglers Blues” is ready to welcome you.

About the host
Hosted by James Clifford
I have been visiting Fowey for many years now, and finally decided to use this as a permanent base for family holidays. Given our love of water sports (Fowey has the lot), particularly sailing and kayaking, and the outdoors generally, not to mention good food; especially seafood(check out the Bouillabaisse at Sam's Bistro), it would be difficult to find a better, more “Perfect Place” than the "Smugglers Blues". This is where we wind down, chill, relax.. whatever you call it these days, and is somewhere we look forward to coming back to, from the moment we leave until the moment we roll back down the hill into the village for that first view of the river and sea.
Why they chose this property
I have been visiting Fowey for the last 20 years and finally moved a few years ago. From my first visit, I fell for the place, its superb range of shops, pubs, restaurants, walks, and water activities. Over those years I have travelled the length and breadth of Cornwall and can honestly say I have never found anywhere else that had the same vibrancy, variety, coupled with the views, and that wonderful feeling of being close enough to see and feel the ocean, but having the sanctity of harbour.
But perhaps the biggest reason, the biggest driver, was the feeling of relaxation that sweeps over you in those first few hours there.. and that's whether your just casting your eyes out to sea, or sitting enjoying that first, refreshing drink. Come experience it, you wont regret it.

What makes this property unique
My little girl will say that the most unique benefit is the fantastic crab catching on the pontoons (she is a record holder) or the shopping or possibly even her favourite Samburger at Sam's Bistro.... however...
Perhaps the most unique benefits are its location. Just a five minute walk into town, slightly more on the way back if you have had a few rums..! The cottage is equally set back enough to avoid the hubbub of the village. The rear garden is an all day long suntrap with table and chairs for those late breakfasts in the sun or warm evening meals in the embers of the sinking sun. And for pet lovers, dog owners especially, it is just right and one of the few properties in Fowey to offer accommodation for pets as well.
One could go on about the unique benefits.. but sometimes its best to come and experience it all... and we haven't had any disappointed customers yet.
