About this property

Crinan Canal Cottage No8 Cairnbaan Cottages

This terraced cottage at no8 is the sister of no4 (almost identical) sitting on the banks of the Crinan Canal at Cairnbaan, Lochgilphead close to Kilmartin in Argyll.

The Crinan Canal offers the ideal environment to enjoy the wonderful scenery, fishing, canoeing, sailing, horse riding, walking and cycling with many cycle tracks signposted throughout the glen and plenty of forests and hills nearby should you wish something more energetic.

Wildlife includes many woodland birds and birds of prey, beavers in the reserve at Knapdale, red squirrels, red and roe deer, seals, otters and occasionally pine martins.

Kilmartin is home to the spectacular ruin of Carnasserie Castle, Nether Largie standing stones, Temple Wood Stone Circle and numerous ancient burial mounds. The medieval hill-fort of Dunadd was considered to be the capital of the ancient Gaelic Kingdom of Dalriada and has ancient stone carvings and the stone footprint believed to be part of a mediaeval coronation ritual.

Kilmartin Museum is well worth a visit to discover the rich history of this ancient land.

The nearby town of Lochgilphead has a variety shops, cafes restaurants, hospital/doctors surgery, a swimming pool, golf course and sports center. There is also a shop where bicycles can be hired.

Boats can be chartered from Crinan harbour and there are wildlife safari trips around the islands where it is possible to see whales, porpoise, seals, many sea birds including golden and white-tailed eagles, and the spectacular Corryvreckan Whirlpools. A walk, cycle or drive from Crinan to Ardrishaig is 9 miles and provides you with the perfect opportunity to take in the stunning views of Mid Argyll and watch the boats sailing by.

The cottage has been recently decorated to a high standard with double glazing and the bath room with a claw foot bath with a hand held shower, the cottage has two bedrooms, with the room to the front giving open views across the canal to the hills beyond, and the rear twin bedroom having views out to the woodland to the back of the cottage.

The ground floor comprises a newly fitted kitchen with a dining area and a cosy sitting room with an enclosed wood-burning fire. Starter pack of logs etc provided. Free Wi-Fi and internet connection recently installed (Fibre-optic)

Outside table/chars are provided in summer months in the small alpine garden to the front to relax and watch the boats go by. There is a bike store at the rear of the property in the lane. Perfect for a relaxing holiday. Ideal for walking, cycling, hill climbing, bird watching, fishing, change over days are flexible depending on length of your visit and by prior arrangement.

The cottage is easily accessed from Glasgow via Loch Lomond and also from Oban to the north.

One well behaved dog is allowed in the cottage living areas but only under responsible supervision and by prior arrangement. Unlike other cottages there is no charge for your four legged friend as long as they bring their own bedding.

At this cottage you have your own dedicated car space.

Prices are based on the start date of your holiday and are for one week (Saturday to Saturday). The cottage is also available to rent for weekends (Fri-Mon) and midweek (Mon-Fri) out-with the peak periods. Please contact me for prices for shorter breaks. I do not take bookings that overlap the weekends i.e. Thursday to Monday.

Entry is usually available after 4pm and departure is by 10am - these times can be changed if required.

Very cosy place to stay
We were so looking forward to coming to Cairnbaan and we were not disappointed with the property. It had everything for a nice comfortable stay. The log burner was a nice treat in the evening, which kept the cottage nice and warm. There's plenty to do and see in the area. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. Pauline, our host, was most welcoming and gave us plenty of ideas of what to do in the area I would highly recommend this cottage.

Great spot
Really lovely cottage in great location. Pauline (owner) very nice and helpful and local hotel does great food ( looks terrible from outside - 5 mins walk) People in local town (loughilphead) very lovely ( tried all the pubs with my dogs ) and the area is spectacular. Also stayed in Crinan Hotel- great food but tired, needs a refurb and a hospitality training package.
