About the host
Hosted by Krista Beauvais
My name is Krista, and I am the long-time owner and lover of Explorers’ Rest. Originally from Canada, I moved to the UK in 2002 and instantly fell in love with the character and history of Royal Greenwich. In 2005, I found this Victorian home—a little worn, a little forgotten, yet full of potential—and knew it was meant to be mine.
When I received the keys in early 2006, I walked inside, sat down on the floor, and cried - not out of regret, but out of the sheer scale of what lay ahead.
At twenty-seven, on a young teacher’s salary, I had bought the only home I could afford in the neighbourhood I loved… and it needed everything. I didn’t yet know how to plaster a wall, handle a drill, or manage a renovation, but I was determined to bring this beautiful house back to life.
Over the next several years, I rebuilt Explorers’ Rest piece by piece, supported by skilled friends and trusted professionals. What began as a daunting project slowly transformed into the charming, warm, and thoughtfully restored sanctuary it is today.
It holds my history (and that of those for more than a century before me!), my creativity, and my heart—and every detail reflects that.
When you step inside, I hope you feel the care and the quiet peace that fills this home. I’ve even left a photo album for you to enjoy, sharing the “before, during, and after” journey of its transformation.
A few years later, I moved in with my husband, Erik, a South African IT specialist who had also made London his home. As we began our life together, I wasn’t sure what to do with this house that meant so much to me. Because we both love travelling and staying in beautifully cared-for homes, I decided to open Explorers’ Rest to guests. Within days of listing it, bookings poured in—and hosting quickly became one of the joys of my life.
I look forward to meeting you!

Why they chose this property
Greenwich is a truly unique corner of London—close enough to embrace everything the city offers, yet peaceful enough to feel worlds away.
My little pocket of Greenwich, Plumstead Common, is, in my opinion, one of its rarest gems. The Common itself unfolds north of Explorers’ Rest and seamlessly connects to Winn’s Common, Rockcliffe Gardens, East Wickham Open Space, and the ancient beauty of Bostall Heath and Woods.
To the south, you’ll find Shrewsbury Park, Shooters Hill Golf Club, and the vast and historic Oxleas Woods - creating a continuous landscape of greenery that feels almost rural.
Surrounded by vast, varied parks, the area offers an exceptional expanse of walking and cycling paths, comparable to countryside rambling - yet we remain just ten minutes from a major transport hub with two Tube lines, a riverboat service, trains, and an extensive bus network.
The neighbourhood itself is warm and welcoming. Neighbours are friendly, gardens are generously sized, street parking is free, and - perhaps the greatest luxury of all - it is blissfully silent at night.
After a full day in Central London, returning home here feels deeply restorative. You’ll be greeted by leafy parks, foxes crossing paths at dusk, birdsong drifting through the morning air, and quiet gardens that invite you to slow down. The surrounding neighbourhoods, once distinct villages of charming Victorian homes, have been gracefully woven into London’s landscape as the city expanded.
I also love how effortlessly I can slip into true countryside from here. While I adore London’s vibrant heart, there is always a sense of calm and comfort when I return to the serenity of my Greenwich retreat at the end of each day.
I hope you too will find that this home and its surroundings invite the explorer in you to exhale, unwind, and settle into a deep and peaceful rest.

What makes this property unique
Creating a beautiful, welcoming space is one of my passions. I love selecting thoughtful touches, small comforts, and little surprises to make your stay memorable. I also enjoy connecting with guests, sharing recommendations, and helping you craft a holiday that feels personal, effortless, and special.
One of the rare luxuries of staying at Explorers’ Rest is the peace and quiet. Situated outside the busy tourist centre, there are no flight paths overhead, and the neighbourhood rests in calm silence at night - perfect for deep, restorative sleep. The private garden is equally tranquil, offering a serene spot to unwind, enjoy a cup of tea, or have your own picnic amidst greenery during the spring and summer months.
Practical comforts make your stay effortless: free parking right outside the door, shops just steps away, parks in every direction, and a bus stop around the corner provides convenient access to the rest of London without needing a car.
Inside, my home’s character shines through in features guests consistently love: the deep vintage metal bathtub, perfect for a soothing soak, and the gorgeous fireplace that creates a warm, cosy atmosphere for quiet evenings at home.
London has its rainy days, so I’ve thoughtfully stocked the house with some books, a new Smart TV, and a puzzle with puzzle board, ensuring even a stay-at-home afternoon feels enjoyable and relaxing.
Above all, each room exudes a gentle, enveloping energy to help you breathe, settle, and truly rest after days of exploring this remarkable city.
