cosy and well appointed

We had a lovely stay at Explorers Rest. It is a very well appointed house with everything you could need and lots of advice/instructions available from the owner. All our dealings with Krista were business like but very friendly and always prompt. We loved our stay.

Fabulous spot!

I stayed in this holiday home for a small number of nights and can wholeheartedly recommend it as an excellent spot for a romantic getaway in the wonderful city of London! The close proximity to parks and the vital east end of town make the location great. Attention to detail is clear in the furnishings and renovations. Fond memories of my nights here are largely thanks to the owner's hospitable graces! I very much look forward to the next opportunity I have to stay!

Fantastic house and location

This is a fantastic house to stay in. Apart from being tastefully decorated and having a lot of soul, the location is great. It's really close to public transports and amenities, and central London is within easy access. The garden is an oasis of peace in the hustle and bustle of London. The house is clean, modern, and cosy. The owner has done a stellar job of turning it into a home away from home for all who stay there. I have many happy memories of this house and I would absolutely love to stay there again. Highly recommended.

A perfect home

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely and well equipped house in Woolwich very much. We felt at home right from the beginning and we could recommend Explorers Rest without doubt. The house has is a real rest - and after a long day out in London or Greenwich you could hide and relax. Krista is a very friendly host and although she was not in Woolwich everything was perfectly arranged - very personal and so much helpful information about the house and the area around. We would definitely come back again. Very warm regards from Germany.

Charming Victorian House

Charming mix of Victorian character and contemporary detail. Very welcoming and comfortable with everything one needs for a relaxing break. Lovely garden for those longsummer evenings. Main bedroom full of character, and second bedroom has a view over the garden. Easy to reach central London and also historic Greenwich with the Maritime Museum and the famous painted ceiling at the Royal Naval College. Only three minutes walk from Plumstead Common and two minutes from local shops. Would not hesitate to recommend it. I plan to return,

Restful holidays

We stayed in the house for 12 days with our three children (8, 9 and 10). It was very comfortable, clean and well-maintained. We really felt at home. The owner provided a very good customer service - there was a welcome book with lots of great informations about nice places to visit. The area is very quiet and save. When we came back from the city of London we enjoyed the comfortable and quiet ambiance. Our children loved to play football in the nearby park. It was easy to go to the city of London. It only took about 20 minutes by bus and tube.

Truly Amazing Holiday Rental

I travelled here on my first international trip and am truly delighted that we chose this location. Krista is more than acommodating, the house is exquisite, and the location is fantastic. From the first email she helped my friend and I with the trip and was extremely prompt in her replies. The house has all the ammenities that you need when renting a home. I was able to cook full meals here in comfort and felt like it was home when staying here. The beds are comfortable and the house is wonderfully decorated. The location is safe and near public transportation making it very easy to navigate to London's city centre. There is a quaint pub and a local market around the corner as well. This house and Krista are truly a delight, and I look forward to staying here again upon another trip to London!

Our best souvenirs of London!

We "lived" in this house for 15 days during Summer 2009. We were a couple studying English in London and we found this little hidden gem by chance.. actually we were really lucky! What I enjoyed the most was the garden: big, nice, plenty of plants, quiet, the ideal place after a day in the busy London. The house is just perfect: clean, big, romantic, so well decorated! It has a personality, it was a real "love nest" for us. We really appreciated Krista, she is a perfect host, she showed her house completely and left everything there: books & dvd were helpful for practicing our English. If I had to come back to London I'd choose this place without doubts!!!

Clearly personal and heartfelt

We were on a month long odyssey of a trip and we started at Krista's place. It remains our favourite place. It is true it is a bit of hike from downtown London but the return "home" after the frenetic pace of central London helps you keep your sanity. We weren't there for one hour before my son said: "I don't know what it is but it really feels like home". The kitchen had everything I needed to cook decent meals and it saved us loads of money on meals. Krista clearly is very serious and thorough about ensuring your family has a great stay. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Trust us, you won't regret it.

Cozy Greenwich Home

This property was a lovely location; out of the hustle and bustle of busy London, but just close enough that all the tourist sites were not out of reach. The house was very clean and had just been renovated when we stayed here (December, 2010). The house has everything you could need as a vacationer. We took advantage of the fully-functioning kitchen and the cozy fireplace on a nice winter's evening. The owners were excellent and easy to contact/provided really detailed directions, easily reached by public transportation. I would recommend this property to those who, at the end of a long day in London, just simply want to relax and unwind. We did not spend a lot of time in the actual area around the property itself, but as a Kent-resident, I have been to most of the sites in the Greenwich area on other occasions and they are all beautiful, peaceful and relaxing.

Home away from home

There are no words to describe how wonderful staying in this house was. Krista is an absolute GEM!! She is beyond helpful, beyond warm, beyond inviting, beyond everything! Her house was just perfect! Very clean, and peaceful after a long day of exploring the wonders of England. Krista is so detailed, she has notes for everything; how to work the radiator, the shower, the front door, labels for every product in the kitchen, the pantry, the bathroom, etc. Bottom line is - you will not go wrong with staying in this beautiful house. After meeting Krista and her husband, I feel I've made lifelong friends. I will definitely be staying here again on my next trip! *If you're lucky, you might see a fox in the garden*

Home away from home

Explorers rest was a perfect home away from home for my family. I am so glad we found this place! Krista was so nice and easy to work with. She was thorough and fast and went over and beyond in answering my questions, from our first correspondence to the last. After we arrived, we could tell that Krista put a lot of time and effort into this property to make it a comfortable and relaxing home away from home for her guests. The property was very clean (inside and out), well maintained and the neighborhood felt safe. The beds were very comfortable and the shower and amenities were wonderful. The kitchen was set up to make it very easy to cook meals. We enjoyed the tranquility explorers rest provided after a long day out in London. The public transportation was easy to navigate and there were a couple of shops close by for basics. We truly enjoyed our stay at explorers rest and would stay again.

Wonderful place to stay in South London

Dear Krista, Last July, we had a wonderful holiday at your place. We stayed two weeks with our two very young children (2 and 5 years old), and we all loved your house ! Everything was perfect : the house was very clean and so well fitting ! We had the feeling to be "at home", and now our children are asking us to come back in Greenwich !! It was also a good area to be : it was easy to travel to central london as well as to the south and the countryside. (free car park in the street in front of the house !) We would like to recommend your place and would like to thank you for your welcome and your help during our stay. :-) Next time we will stay in London, we will come back to your wonderful explorer's rest !! Thank's from us four ! Yanouchka, Luca, Emma and Noam from Switzerland, Geneva

Amazing stay in London area!

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful home for a week. Every detail was just like in the pictures- from the lovely garden to the space saving kitchen to the artfully finished bedrooms. What the pictures cannot tell you is that Krista is a fantastic host! She has everything in her home labelled for ease of use; binders of maps and information; movies to watch and cd's to listen to- and Oyster cards to help us get on the train and tube! No hotel would ever do so much. The area around this home is convenient and the people are friendly. Greenwich itself was beautiful to explore and London was about a 20-30 minute transit trip away. This is the 4th time we have booked a "home away" spot- they were all great but Krista's attention to comfort, care and convenience makes this our #1 choice! Bravo- and can't wait to return!

Awesome, look forward to return visit!!!

To date we have stayed at Krista's on three seperate occassions and look forward to our next visit- Such a clean, cosy, comfy spot with easy access to the center of London or the countryside. She has great books and brocheurs that had us exploring places not on our list. Unlike other homes we have stayed, she had personal notes with extra information that made it so easy to know how to get everywhere easily. Maybe it is because she likes to travel herself, but she seems to know what visitors need. Just make sure you leave time at the end of the day to enjoy a nice wine in front of the fireplace. Also, I'm a morning person so loved taking my first coffee and a book into the garden- this time we had exceptional weather so 6:30 every morning that was my spot while my husband, the "chef" had fun creating our English breakfast. Great that the local "shops" are so handy and have everything you need!! Overall, delightful!!!!

Cute place, far from London...

The house is well maintained and you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into making it comfortable for visitors. The special touches like a welcome basket with a note as well as taking the time to spread Easter eggs over the house (since it was Easter time) for the kids was very lovely. Just a note to those wanting to travel to London centre for the tourist attractions, this place is quite far away. It took us 2.5 hours just to get there from the airport (the Piccadilly line was closed and it was rush hour). It also took us a minimum of 53 minutes to get anywhere near London centre. With three exhausted kids after a day of sightseeing this was a bit frustrating. Downtown Royal Greenwich is also a 20 minute bus ride. The reviews about it being so close to everything is definitely misleading.

Truly adorable!

My husband and I wanted a 'real Londoners' experience on our holiday and were really pleased with our choice! We rented this charming little home for almost two months. You can imagine that we were a little worried since we had never seen it but it did not let us down! We loved every second of our time here. And it was such a heavenly treat to be able to have the back door open into the garden, just like home. The biggest thing we appreciated was being able to wander through all the green spaces around the house and not worry about any sort of crime...you can imagine that is a real treat for us. Krista made sure the place was cleaned once a week and the kitchen was so well stocked with cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc that we were as comfortable here as we were at home. I would go back in a heartbeat and so would my husband. I highly recommend this charming little home! In fact, I can't recommend it highly enough. You will feel wonderfully relaxed here.

The Perfect Way To Spend A London Holiday!

If you’re looking for a welcoming home to stay at during your London Holiday, look no further. As travelers who prefer to immerse ourselves in the culture we visit, Explorer’s Rest was the perfect place to stay during our travels in London. This lovely home—situated in a charming neighborhood in Greenwich—provides travelers with the care and comfort of a relaxing and beautiful Victorian flat. Explorer’s Rest itself is lovely and enchanting. Throughout the picturesque home, we found helpful books, notebooks, and pamphlets on how to travel around London, as well as information on where to eat, shop, and explore the city. Additionally, small labels are located around the flat, which permitted us to navigate throughout the house easily. Books, DVD’s, and televisions filled the home, which enabled us to relax and enjoy our surroundings—especially after a busy day in London! Staying at Explorer’s Rest allowed us to spend quality time together. As we reflected on our adventures in the city, we enjoyed a nice meal, and a relaxing cup of tea around the kitchen table. Furthermore, Krista’s kindness and wealth of knowledge is what truly made our journey to London special. One could not ask for a better place.

A Fantastic Getaway!

Explorer's Rest is an absolutely lovely place to stay, whether you are looking for rest and relaxation, or want to explore the sights and sounds of London. Explorer's Rest has an ideal location in lovely Greenwich. You can take a leisurely tour through Greenwich and area, or hop onto a bus/train/DRL/boat and quickly and easily be in the heart of London. The location offers you the opportunity to experience the hustle and bustle of London, yet retire from and relax out of the crowded city at the end of the day. Explorer's Rest is a beautiful, well-maintained, and tastefully decorated home. It has a warming and welcoming atmosphere, which was gratefully received after a long journey. I took full advantage of the kitchen, which had everything and more to enjoy a lovely meal and mulled wine with friends in the comfort and warmth of the kitchen. Each room is decorated in a way that makes each room unique and elegant. Movies, books, and other small touches ensure the house feels welcoming and comfortable. I would highly recommend Explorer's Rest to anyone traveling or staying in the London/Greenwich area. You can travel at ease and peace of mind, with the unbeatable location and lovely condition of the house.

A place like home

We convey you glad tidings About a beautiful country, In that on my trip We found a special place. Old indeed, but reborn, It holds explorers rest. You open the door To a different world. No noise anymore Midst the global city, But softly scented air Envelops you. All kinds of furniture And decoration are Lovingly combined. The way through the house Is worth a journey for itself. Again and again lovely things Are discovered On every step. And not to forget: I’d never slept Better in my life Than in this bed. Kitchen and bathroom - You’ll never miss anything, If you stay for a short Or a longer time. The pretty garden and Outside the near park, Our dog was so happy As he were at home. In a few days You can’t see all. But now we know a place like home To come back to for the next time. ------------------------------------- A million times thank you, Krista, for everything you did for the house and especially for us! Love Andrea and family We stayed at Explorers Rest from 2011/09/02 till 2011/09/08

My dreams came to life here!

I can not say enough about this home away from home - except I didn't want to go home! Beyond the cleanliness, and beauty of the space, the feeling you get when you walk through the doors and throughout the rooms is what I have remembered most. The owner of the home has clearly filled this home with love, personality, and life. The location is perfect - a few minutes from the tube, a market, shops, and close to local pubs if you're looking for a pint :) The owner of the home was absolutely lovely; friendly, warm, and generous are just three words I would use to describe her. If you are looking for a breath of fresh air, this is the vacation spot for you - if you are looking for adventure and want a relaxing space to come home to - this is it. If you want tranquility, and to just relax with a book - take another look at that fireplace and garden; you've found it. The couch goes perfectly with a glass of wine, and the tub is great when filled with bubbles :) From one traveller to another - don't miss out on this opportunity, because you'll never know what you've missed! I can't WAIT to go back!!! If you want to Do, See, and Live the Dream... you can stop dreaming and start living your own reality in this beautiful home away from home :)

the best holiday ever

We are a family with two boys; we have spent in the house two fantastic weeks in July 2011. The property is absolutely perfect regarding everything. It's clean and tidy. You can find all you need since it's truly well organized. The house is extremely pleasant and the furniture is new and lovely. The garden is relaxing, well-kept and very nice. The location is fantastic; you can reach London easily but near the house there are shops and supermarkets, so that you can buy whatever you like. The neighbourhood is peaceful and safe; it's also good for children since you just have to cross the street and you find amazing enormous parks with enchanting trees. The property is definitely charming and the best thing is that you can experience living as English people do. This means that if you like travelling and learn different way of living you should experience a holiday with no hotels. You can reach the airports easily with no stress. The owner is kind, friendly and always prompt in providing you of everything you could ever need. I strongly recommend this property to anyone who wants to spend the most incredible holiday ever! We left there a part of our heart... Friendship we have found is even better than the best house we have ever rent.

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
My name is Krista, and I am the long-time curator and caretaker of Explorers’ Rest. Originally from Canada, I moved to the UK in 2002 and instantly fell in love with the character and history of Royal Greenwich. In 2005, I found this Victorian home—a little worn, a little forgotten, yet full of potential—and knew it was meant to be mine.

When I received the keys in early 2006, I walked inside, sat down on the floor, and crie - not out of regret, but out of the sheer scale of what lay ahead. At twenty-seven, on a young teacher’s salary, I had bought the only home I could afford in the neighbourhood I loved… and it needed everything. I didn’t yet know how to plaster a wall, handle a drill, or manage a renovation, but I was determined to bring this beautiful house back to life.

Over the next several years, I rebuilt Explorers’ Rest piece by piece, supported by skilled friends and trusted professionals. What began as a daunting project slowly transformed into the charming, warm, and thoughtfully restored sanctuary it is today. It holds my history, my creativity, and my heart—and every detail reflects that.

When you step inside, I hope you feel the care, the craftsmanship, and the quiet joy that fills this home. I’ve even left a photo album for you to enjoy, sharing the “before, during, and after” journey of its transformation.

A few years later, I moved in with my husband, Erik, a South African IT specialist who had also made London his home. As we began our life together, I wasn’t sure what to do with this house that meant so much to me. Because we both love travelling and staying in beautifully cared-for homes, I decided to open Explorers’ Rest to guests. Within days of listing it, bookings poured in—and hosting quickly became one of the great joys of my life.

I look forward to meeting you!

Why they chose this property

Greenwich is a truly unique corner of London—close enough to embrace everything the city offers, yet peaceful enough to feel worlds away.

My little pocket of Greenwich, Plumstead Common, is, in my opinion, one of its rarest gems. The Common itself unfolds north of Explorers’ Rest and seamlessly connects to Winn’s Common, Rockcliffe Gardens, East Wickham Open Space, and the ancient beauty of Bostall Heath and Woods.

To the south, you’ll find Shrewsbury Park, Shooters Hill Golf Club, and the historic Oxleas Woods - creating a continuous landscape of greenery that feels almost rural.

Surrounded by vast, varied parks, the area offers an exceptional expanse of walking and cycling paths, comparable to countryside rambling - yet we remain just ten minutes from a major transport hub with two Tube lines, a riverboat service, trains, and an extensive bus network.

The neighbourhood itself is warm and welcoming. Neighbours are friendly, gardens are generously sized, street parking is free, and - perhaps the greatest luxury of all - it is blissfully silent at night.

After a full day in Central London, returning home here feels deeply restorative. You’ll be greeted by leafy parks, foxes crossing paths at dusk, birdsong drifting through the morning air, and quiet gardens that invite you to slow down. The surrounding neighbourhoods, once distinct villages of charming Victorian homes, have been gracefully woven into London’s landscape as the city expanded.

I also love how effortlessly I can slip into true countryside from here. While I adore London’s vibrant heart, there is always a sense of calm and comfort when I return to the serenity of my Greenwich retreat at the end of each day.

I hope you too will find that this home and its surroundings invite the explorer in you to exhale, unwind, and settle into a deep and peaceful rest.

What makes this property unique

Creating a beautiful, welcoming space is truly my passion. I love selecting thoughtful touches, small comforts, and little surprises to make your stay memorable. I also enjoy connecting with guests, sharing recommendations, and helping you craft a holiday that feels personal, effortless, and special.

One of the rare luxuries of staying at Explorers’ Rest is the peace and quiet. Situated outside the busy tourist centre, there are no flight paths overhead, and the neighbourhood rests in calm silence at night - perfect for deep, restorative sleep. The private garden is equally tranquil, offering a serene spot to unwind, enjoy a cup of tea, or have your own picnic amidst greenery during the spring and summer months.

Practical comforts make your stay effortless: free parking right outside the door, shops just steps away, parks in every direction, and a bus stop around the corner provides convenient access to the rest of London without needing a car.

Inside, my home’s character shines through in features guests consistently love: the deep vintage metal bathtub, perfect for a soothing soak, and the gorgeous fireplace that creates a warm, cosy atmosphere for quiet evenings at home.

London has its rainy days, so I’ve thoughtfully stocked the house with some books, a new Smart TV, and a puzzle with puzzle board, ensuring even a stay-at-home afternoon feels enjoyable and relaxing.

Above all, each room exudes a gentle, enveloping energy to help you breathe, settle, and truly rest after days of exploring this remarkable city.
