About this property

Lake James Historic Couple's Retreat 10 mins from Lake James, on Wine Circuit

This historic farmhouse is located in a picturesque country setting. Minimum rental period is 3 months. The location is on the winery circuit next door to South Creek Winery, and about 10 minutes or so from Silver Fork Winery. The home was built in the early 1900's from wood obtained from this farm tract. There was a civil war era cabin at the current home location where Daniel's great-grandparents, Adolphus Rowe & Annie Rowe Simmons, lived and some of the floor joists were kept and utilized when the home was built. Adolphus is the oval picture closest to the master bedroom and we are looking for a good picture of Annie Simmons. Daniel's granddad married his grandmother Anna Bowman, and her dad, Daniel's great grandfather Sam Bowman, is the oval picture to the left of the Adolphus picture. Anna Bowman is seen in a picture holding Daniel at the top of the steps. Daniel's 2nd cousin, Lewis Guy Flack, is in a picture on the fireplace mantle. He was the first casualty/death during WW2 from McDowell County. Daniel's uncle cline is the framed portrait picture in the living room. He is also seen in the master bedroom in the iconic picture with Dwight Eisenhower, soldier standing to the far right with a pack on his front, prior to the D-Day invasion. Daniel's grandfather, who was also named Daniel, lived in this home and told the story of troops coming through the area during the Civil War. Most of the community relayed this from one household to the next and word spread that troops were coming, so many of the household community were prepared. Troops were looking for food and valuables. Adolphus was in the war at the time so his wife, Annie Simmons Rowe and a farmhand, hid the livestock to keep it from being confiscated. Daniel's grandfather told him that the milk cow and other livestock were taken to a rock shelving/cave back through the woods and were not found by the troops. We have relatives that fought for both sides during the Civil War, hence the saying, "Brother Against Brother". Our family has an extensive military history and there are pictures in the home reflecting this. The home was first renovated after World War II when Daniel's dad and brothers came back from the War. They enclosed the rear porch and kitchen area to make it part of the home. The kitchen was detached from the home kitchen prior to that. The Sears & Roebuck cook/woodstove is still in the kitchen and this was used by Daniel's grandmother. You can see the lap siding in the laundry room that was on the outside porch before the renovation. The front gable, brick columns, and indoor plumbing were added at that time as well. The hardwood flooring throughout the home was installed and came from wood cut from the farm. Daniel & Ellen who are the owners, also worked on the home for several years recently and modernized it to some degree. There is central heat and air, dish TV, and Wi-Fi and the end goal was to add some modern conveniences, but keep it rustic as well. You will love it here if you love what we have described. This is one of 3-homes on approximately 100 acres. The home is about 10-minutes from beautiful Lake James and I-40 and about 35 minutes from the eastern part of Asheville. The home offers beautiful views, a peaceful country setting, comfort and roominess. The home rents for $2400/month. Friendly, house trained dogs are allowed but no cats due to owner allergies. All dogs must be leash walked. Puppies are not allowed. The main thing is to come and have a fun time!
