Very good

Not good for dogs with only a postage stamp of yard available. Place also smelt very musty and stale due to all old furniture from 2nd hand shops. Was extremely clean though. Also was left an out of date carrot cake which was very stale. Not a good recommend for local bakers.

Your comments are misleading and inaccurate. Most of our furniture is new with a few family period pieces. All mattresses were bought new for this house and are less than 5 years old. The property was clean, aired and had been used all summer by guests who detected no smells. Indeed, the only smell we have detected was the strong smell of dog in an unaired house on your departure! Fortunately we had some free days immediately after your departure and were able to clean and air the house so this did not spoil the enjoyment of others.
Until now we have found all our dog owning visitors very considerate in using the many country lanes within a few minutes’ walk to exercise their pets, and also in keeping the house aired to prevent the build-up of smells. Our normal policy is one small dog only, you asked to bring two and we agreed to this without making an additional charge. Our property description and photos are quite clear about the limited external space, which is intended as an internal sitting out space, not an exercise area for dogs.
The carrot cake was bought from our very reliable local artisan bakery on the day you arrived. We should no doubt also have checked the best before date for reassurance (it was for the day before your arrival) but you were under no obligation to make use of our gift. In fact, you did not even open it to check the freshness, so we were able to do so a week later when it was still moist fresh and delicious!
Used cottage as a base to visit North Devon. Lovely location and cottage. Property was a lot bigger than expected. Owners left bread, cake and milk which was appreciated. Many scarecrows around Bampton. Unfortunately visited over Sunday/bank holiday so most of village shops were closed. Used Exeter Inn and The Swan for food (booking essential). Parking was as simple as parking in any available space along Brook Street.

About the host

I am an artist living and working in the Devon village of Bampton. My husband, Peter, and I moved to Bampton in 2012 to start our art holiday business. We live and work from Weston House, which is about 300m from Coombe Dene, and where we also offer B&B between our art courses. Our art courses have proved very popular, drawing students from across the UK and from many other parts of the world.
Why they chose this property
We love living in Bampton, which is a large village in a lovely setting, with lots of local shops and services. The surrounding area is a beautiful and unspoilt part of rural Devon, with hills, lakes and river valleys. It is within 12 miles of the M5, yet quiet and peaceful: an ideal place to get away and relax for a few days or a week, yet very accessible.
What makes this property unique
Coombe Dene has been completely renovated and refurbished to a high standard since we bought the house in 2016, with modern kitchen, bathrooms and shower rooms and new carpets and floor coverings throughout. It is spacious and comfortably furnished, yet in the heart of the village, with pubs, restaurants and shops within a few minutes walk or less.
