Cass Lodge is a charming red brick barn conversion surrounded by open countryside on the owner’s arable farm. Set in a very quiet, peaceful location with no light pollution, and on a clear night, the Milky Way can be seen! The cottage looks out onto open fields where the owners keep a small flock of rare Boreray sheep, which originally hail from the Outer Hebrides. At times, there may also be piglets on the farm.
It is ideally suited to the cyclist/walking/retired person fraternity, being situated on, and close to, idyllic quiet country lanes/roads in picturesque countryside and within easy reach of various parts of Sustran cycle routes 65, 66, 166, 167, 656 and 658 which form part of the Way of the Roses, Yorkshire Wolds and Trans Pennine (east) cycle routes. You’ll be perfectly placed close to many of the locations used in the Tour de Yorkshire endurance cycle races which were broadcast around the world.
There are walks straight from your door, and the local countryside is criss-crossed with walks and public rights of way - through woodland and across farmland, opening up to lovely views of the Hambleton Hills, Pennines, Cleveland Hills and Vales of York, Pickering and Mowbray. Cass Lodge is within easy reach of the North Yorks Moors - recently voted as the best National Park in the country in 2018, and also the Yorkshire Dales and the coast, all with a plethora of walks. There are also national trails such as the Cleveland Way, Yorkshire Wolds Way, and the Lyke Wake Walk, a challenging route of over 40 miles across the Yorkshire Moors to the coast which has to be completed in under 24 hours. There are some excellent tea rooms in the area, all very popular with walkers and cyclists alike.
There are many castles, abbeys and prestigious country homes to visit, many open to the public and the most notable being Castle Howard, Beningbrough Hall and Fountains Abbey. Byland Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey, Ampleforth Abbey, Sheriff Hutton Castle (Richard III), Scarborough Castle, Harewood House, are either on the doorstep or all within a very easy drive. For the gardeners among you, Newby Hall with its famous borders is a 30 minute drive away, or alternatively Helmsley walled garden Scampston Hall, RHS Harlow Carr, Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey, with their water gardens and deer park, Stillingfleet Lodge garden, Thorpe Perrow Arboretum are all worth a visit. There are also numerous villages holding open garden events during the summer months.
