The property is aptly named Ghillie’s Cottage due to its links to the fishing rights on the River Derwent that are owned by the family. The River Derwent is a highly sought after river amongst anglers providing rich pickings of salmon and trout. As long as you have a National Rod Licence you may fish on the family’s beat. The popular Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, birthplace of William Wordsworth, is just a short walk away. In fact, the National Trust Wordsworth House is just a few minutes walk. Your nearest supermarket and a couple of pubs serving great food and local cask ales are also a few minutes walk away. The main town centre is also easily reached on foot. Cockermouth is a thriving market town full of hidden surprises at every turn. It boasts a great selection of pubs, quaint restaurants, micro-breweries, local craft shops, independent coffee houses, delicatessens, speciality shops and of course, well known retailers and branded stores too. If you like culture, Kirkgate Arts shows movies, arts and drama. Fancy a swim? The leisure centre is also nearby as well as local cycle hire. You’ll also find the famous Jennings Brewery nestled beneath the castle walls where the River Derwent and River Cocker meet.
