The good quality finish and thoughtful decoration is evident as soon as you walk in. Downstairs you have an open plan living/dining room leading to a brand new fitted kitchen for preparing that perfect meal. A lovely spiral staircase, a real feature of the property, leads you to two bedrooms and a modern bathroom. The property sleeps up to four adults in a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, both of which have a TV and plenty of character. The property is aptly named Ghillie’s Cottage due to its links to the fishing rights on the River Derwent that are owned by the family. A ghillie being a person who acts as an attendant to someone on a hunting expedition, or in this case, a fishing trip. The River Derwent is a highly sought after river amongst anglers providing rich pickings of salmon and trout. As long as you have a National Rod Licence you may fish on the family’s beat. Details of the location and costs are available on request.

Your nearest supermarket and a couple of pubs serving great food and local cask ales are also a few minutes walk away. The main town centre is also easily reached on foot. Cockermouth is a thriving market town full of hidden surprises at every turn. It boasts a great selection of pubs, quaint restaurants, micro-breweries, local craft shops, independent coffee houses, delicatessens, speciality shops and of course, well known retailers and branded stores too. If you like culture, Kirkgate Arts shows movies, arts and drama. Fancy a swim? The leisure centre is also nearby as well as local cycle hire. You’ll also find the famous Jennings Brewery nestled beneath the castle walls where the River Derwent and River Cocker meet.
Cockermouth is on the border of the Lake District National Park, so whether you like the rugged adventure of the mountains or the serenity of the seaside, you’ve got the best of both worlds. You’re also within easy reach of some glorious lakes. Take a 5 mile drive to Bassenthwaite Lake at the foot of the Skiddaw range for fantastic walks, woodland, wildlife and watersports. You’ll also find the Lakes Distillery offering tasting tours as well as the Lake District Wildlife Park just 6 miles away. The popular town of Keswick is 14 miles away and can be reached in about 20 minutes. If you’re not into fishing, you’ll love Ghillie Cottage. If you are into fishing, life doesn’t get much better than this! Beach 9½ miles. Shop 175 yards, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

We had an enjoyable stay at Ghillie Cottage.
We had an enjoyable stay at Ghillie Cottage. We received a welcome text from the owners and that together with the welcome goodies were much appreciated. The property was warm and comfortable and the kitchen contained all the necessary equipment we needed - including a wine fridge! However, the kitchen is very small and would benefit from some storage space for guests’ groceries. There is a wardrobe in the double bedroom but no hanging space in the second bedroom. The property is located close to local amenities and is in a quiet area with no passing traffic. Cockermouth has a lovely variety of independent shops - including two great shoe shops, a fantastic cookshop and a welcoming bookshop. This was our second stay in Cockermouth and we hope to return to Ghillie Cottage one day.
Clean, comfortable and well-equipped. The convenience of a town centre with great access to this stunning part of the lakes.Thoughtfully prepped with Christmas welcome pack and festive extras. Really enjoyed our stay.

Ghillie Cottage was in a great location for exploring the Western Lake District.
Ghillie Cottage was in a great location for exploring the Western Lake District. It was comfortable and well equipped and Claire the owner was really helpful by sending a text when we got there and coming to see us to make sure everything was okay. She gave lots of ideas of places to go with the family. My family and I thourouly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning.

The street front, before you enter the courtyard is a bit scary,as not as nice as some of the surrounding houses and the actual court is clean , but dull. Certainly the outside does not match the inside which is gorgeous. Really nice town close to a lot of beautiful nature spots.
