Once a hive of activity and frequented by smugglers, Allonby, with cobbled lanes, Victorian charm and a history of herring fishing, has a long standing seaside heritage. Porthole Cottage has its own place in history; this former stables used to house the village donkeys and commands a prominent position right on the beachside. Now converted, this stunning holiday home offers all the indulgences and stylish interior design you could hope for from a 21st century, seaside hideaway.
All on one level, Porthole Cottage comfortably sleeps up to six guests in two spacious double bedrooms and one twin bedded room, which makes it the perfect accommodation for couples and families. The property offers contemporary and tasteful décor but is still in keeping with its coastal beginnings; the round porthole that looks out to the village offers an ever-present reminder of this property’s seaside heritage. On sunny days, guests can enjoy sitting out in the courtyard garden, complete with table and chairs, or continue through the gate 50 yards to reach the famous Allonby Beach. After a long stroll along the shore, you can throw a couple of logs on the wood burner and put your feet up in front of the TV, while enjoying a wide range of movies and box-sets courtesy of Netflix, included at no extra charge. There is also an Amazon Alexa with unlimited music choice. The property benefits from lots of natural daylight, thanks to the roof light windows, and this continues throughout the property including the bathroom, where you can find a full size bath for a soak after a long day of exploring. A well equipped kitchen finishes off this stunning property.
This popular sleepy seaside village on the North West coast of Cumbria, nestled between Maryport and Silloth, has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village shop and tea rooms are within easy reach on foot, as are the two village pubs, the first of which is just 50 yards across the road. With its long sandy beaches, Allonby offers great views over the Solway Firth to the mountains of Southern Scotland. For those seeking some more rugged outdoor adventure, this Cumbrian hotspot is only a 10 mile drive to the Lake District National Park and 16 miles to the nearest Lake, Bassenthwaite, home to the famous Lakes Distillery offering guided tours and tastings. The Lake District Wildlife Park, with over 100 species of exotic animals, makes a fun-filled day out for all ages. Beach 50 yards. Shop ¼ mile, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Absolutely beautiful place; definitely want to go again.
Absolutely beautiful place; definitely want to go again. A lovely welcome pack with a bottle of wine and some doggy treats. There's even bowls and dog towels. My only issue was there was no hoover to clean the rug. Both my dogs are white and it's noticeable when they shed, which seems to be all the time. The area is extremely dog friendly and it was so nice to be able to take them everywhere with us. The beach is literally over the road.

Lovely, well maintained and clean cottage.
Lovely, well maintained and clean cottage. Warm and inviting. Very nice furniture, soft furnishings, towels, bedding etc. Very well equipped. Highly recommended.
We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay in Porthole cottage- very relaxing. Don’t think we’ve ever stayed in a holiday cottage that’s so well equipped. On arrival it was lovely and warm and a welcome gift of wine and biscuits was very thoughtful.
The owner, Cath, was very friendly and helpful.
Thank you Cath for a lovely week and we hope to visit again.

Porthole Cottage truly exceeded our expectations.
Porthole Cottage truly exceeded our expectations. On first entering the cottage we all felt this looked just perfect. On further inspection it certainly didn't disappoint. The kitchen/ dining room and lounge where all open plan and very cosy looking. The three bedrooms were airy, light and very spacious, with clean matching bedding linen throughout, even the wardrobe handles made from small rocks were quaint. The bathroom didn't disappoint either with both bath and separate shower. The courtyard at the front of the cottage was perfect for our 3 little West Highland Terriers, they loved it.

A delightful cottage in a truly stunning area.
A delightful cottage in a truly stunning area.
The beach, literally just a few strides away from the cottage, stretches for miles and allows for so much exploration. The cottage is very pretty inside & so cosy to return to after all the sea air. Well equipped, with some really thoughtful little touches (like holiday cottage ID tags for your dog). Would recommend replacing the mattresses soon, to maintain the comfort levels.

Nice little cottage by the sea.
Nice little cottage by the sea. It doesn't overlook the sea but it is on the front so step outside and walk around the side and the beach is right there. A few local amenities - pub, cafe, fish and chip shop and leisure centre in the village. Nice to run/cycle along a good walkable path along the seafront. Lovely views and sunsets over to Scotland.
The cottage was all on one level which was good for my 82 yr old Mum. Good size bedrooms and lovely kitchen and bathroom and a large wood burning stove. Lots of useful information on things to do etc. and good communication from the owners. From other comments & reviews they seem to be trying hard to ensure people have a good time and add nice touches to the cottage to please. If I was to make one suggestion, a handle in the large shower would be useful and reassuring for those elderly or less mobile as my Mum found it too daunting to have a shower as her balance is not the best anymore. Hope this add value.
30/40 mins drive to Bassenthwaite & Keswick.

A very well equiped cottage with everything you could need. Fantastic location only yards from the beach, which is not busy at all, but beautiful.
We ate fish n chips from the Codfather, had breakfast and lunch at the tea rooms which were all yummy.
Great location being so close to the beach but also a 40 minute drive to Keswick.
We all (parents, 2 teenagers & dog) loved our week away and will definately be returning.
Highly recommended.

We had a lovely family holiday at Porthole Cottage.
We had a lovely family holiday at Porthole Cottage. The cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. Location is great, very close to the beach and local areas including Maryport and Dodd Wood, with Scarfell Pike not too far away. We did lots of local walks and the cottage and surrounding areas are also very dog friendly.
