NOTES OF TOURIST INTEREST

COMILLAS: historical villa located in a privileged natural environment, near the Picos de Europa. Possibility of numerous walks and visits (sea, mountains, towns and charming places).
Comillas lived its period of splendor in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when its most emblematic buildings were built, favored by the initiative of Antonio López y López, emigrant to Cuba and founder of a large shipping company; his financial power and his friendship with the Crown earned him the title of Marquis of Comillas in 1882. In 1881 a Council of Ministers was held in the town, and the first public lighting in Spain was installed in Comillas.
The population will allow you to choose or vary your vacation period combining rest with activity as you like. From important cultural visits in the town itself, to mountain activities (Fuente Dé cable car, bike descents, etc.), river (Sella descent -with activity departures from Llanes-) or the classic beach, surf included (several schools in the area).

BUILDINGS TO VISIT
-Cemetery (located on the ruins of a 15th century church), presided over by the outstanding modernist sculpture of Llimona: "El Ángel".
-The old square, the parish church and some houses in the center of the town are an excellent example of popular architecture from the 18th century.
- Sobrellano Palace (residence of the Marquis), designed by Martorell and Domenech i Muntaner. Next to it, the chapel-pantheon of the same style.
- “El Capricho”, the modernist palace of the great architect Antonio Gaudí.
-From the Palace, at the top of Cardosa, you can see the Pontifical University, in a neo-Gothic style with Mudejar influence. Also built at the expense of Antonio López, it is distinguished by its monumentality and its characteristic reddish color.

Comillas a vécu sa splendeur à la fin du XIXe siècle et principes du XXe, quand ses édifices les plus emblems ont eté construits, merci à l initiative d Antonio López y López, émigrant à Cuba et fondateur d une grande compagnie navale; son pouvoir financier et son amitié avec la Couronne lui ont valu le titre de Marquis de Comillas in 1882. In 1881 he was celebrated in Comillas a Conseil des Ministres, et à cette époque on a installé le premier éclairage public de l Espagne.

-Cemetery (cimetière) (placé sur les ruines d une église du XVe siècle, presides over the modernist sculpture of Llimona: "L´Ange".
- La vieille place, l église et quelques maisons du center de la villa sont un échantillon d architecture populaire du XVIIIe siècle. - Palais de Sobrellano (residence du Marquis), dessiné par Martorell et Domenech i Muntaner. Près de celui-ci, la chapelle - panthéon du même style.

Comillas experienced its greatest period of splendor at the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, when its most emblematic buildings were built, thanks to Antonio López y López’s initiative.
