Home away from home
A lovely little cottage on a picturesque setting. We absolutely had an amazing time here and felt instantly at home, the hot tub was a great touch with a view of the stars on a clear night. We will definitely be back.

Overall very enjoyable stay, few things to be aware of.
Overall we had a very enjoyable stay at Smiddy Cottage! We loved the location for its proximity to stunning landscape and local villages to visit. The cottage has many positives including its clean, spacious and well stocked with kitchen utensils. The garden is very nice (not the greatest view) and the biggest positive for us was enjoying the hot tub on a clear night whilst gazing at the stars. A few things on the listing could have been made clearer including, the proximity of the cottage to the road, there is a fast road right next to the cottage, the cottage is also one of approx 4-5 properties on the same area, neither of these were a problem to us but could be to others. The cottage is overall very neat and tidy but could do with a lick of paint in a few areas and the master bedroom mattress could do with replacing as it's very creaky (though we both still slept well). Like we say overall a very enjoyable stay, the multiple positives definitely outwaying the few drawbacks, no place is ever going to be 100% for everyone but this is defo coming it at 95% for us! 😎

About the host

Hosted by Sue Smith

Host profile image
Philip and Sue moved to Glenshee in 2006, after working in London for many years. Philip grew up in Scotland and skied regularly in Glenshee, so knew the area, and Dalnoid specifically.

Why they chose this property

We bought Dalnoid in 2006 after falling in love with the stunning views and have transformed it from derelict buildings, into much sought-after holiday accommodation.

From the first day we visited we knew how we wanted it all to look and how we would operate. After many months of hard work, we opened New Steading Cottage (now The Groose Hoose) in early 2008, followed by The Coo Shed later that year. Smiddy Cottage was opened to guests in 2010, and had some refurbishment work carried out in 2014. We have enjoyed greeting our guests ever since, with many returning year after year.

In 2014 we had the idea to build a 'Glenshee Treehouse' in the field to the North. Build started at the end of 2015 and we opened to our first guests in September 2016. Due to its popularity, the 2nd treehouse opened in October 2018.

What makes this property unique

We have had many self-catering holidays ourselves and are so often disappointed when we arrive, that the little things haven't been thought about - whether its a lack of coat hangers in the wardrobes, a desperate lack of suitable equipment in the kitchen, or a feeling that we need to clean the cottage before we can stay in it. So we have tried to ensure that at Dalnoid we've thought of everything:

- our cleaning standards are very high

- we don't charge for extras - so electricity, logs, bedding, towels, hot-tubs, wifi are all included in the price you pay

- you'll find a few treats in the kitchen when you arrive, along with plenty of basics you'd have at home (cling film, tin foil, plastic bags, kitchen roll, salt & pepper, oil etc)

- We've included everything we can think of in the kitchen, including a Scottish porridge spurtle! (but if you think of something else, just make a note in the visitor book and we'll see what we can do)

- there are at least 20 coat hangers in each wardrobe, so you don't have to live out of a suitcase on the floor

- there are soap dispensers at all of the sinks (including the kitchen), as well as a range of toiletries in the bathroom

- there are plenty of tablets for the dishwasher and washing machine and an initial supply of toilet rolls in the bathrooms

- there are a good supply of books and DVDs

- there are sledges (and snow shovels) for the winter months

- there are BBQs, comfy seating and a picnic table in the garden for summer months, as well as the private hot-tub which is available all year round

We try to ensure that our guests arrive and are pleased with what they see and they've not had to pack the kitchen sink to enjoy their holiday.
