About Phil Verner
I'm a retired designer (exhibition/interior) and wood craftsman who loves timber houses. I design and make furniture and sculptural pieces often using recycled and salvaged timber. I'm currently restoring a timber house almost 120 years old where I live with my wife Ann in Sydney.
Phil Verner purchased this House in 1980
Why Phil Verner chose Blackheath
I purchased the land where the house now stands and have designed, built, extended and furnished the house over almost 40 years. As many trees were retained as possible and the house enjoys an outlook directly into the bush and overlooks the walking track to Govetts Leap. While sitting in "urban bush" the house is only 10 minutes very pleasant walk to Blackheath village with its cafes, restaurants, pubs & shops. The swimming pool (for summer) is even closer at the end of the street.
What makes this House unique
This is not a "standard house". It features a unique design, timber flooring & panelling along with handcafted furniture & decorative features. Care has been taken in the design to provide outlook and access for sun. Cross ventilation is available to provide comfort in summer including an "air chimney" to bring cool basement air into the main bedroom. A double sided wood fireplace is provided for winter backed up by externally flued gas heaters (ie no fumes in the house). A collection of largely B&W Australian photography is displayed in the house usually showing the Blue Mountains. The house is in a moist pocket and the bush garden includes many tree ferns (3 different species)

Great getaway location
Great house near the bush. Owner very responsive and helpful. Plenty of birdlife visits the verandah every morning. Easy access to Blue Mountains walking tracks. Good heating available (gas and wood fire, electric blankets) which would be handy in winter when I suspect it gets a bit cold. Overall a great spot for a getaway from the hustle of Sydney.
Perfect family weekend
From booking to check in to check out, the whole process was so straightforward. Location of the property was excellent, gorgeous bush views and private, yet within walking distance to local park, bushwalks, and town. Layout of the house was perfect for stay with extended family - grandparents got their own "wing" ;) House is really well appointed with plenty of kitchen and household items - loads of firewood too which was definitely needed for our weekend! Our stay was made all the more memorable with snow :) A great place to stay for families and a perfect weekender!
Birthday Celebration Weekend
Great weekend away in this cozy and well-built cabin. Plenty of firewood for the amazing double sided fireplace. Electric blankets in every bed. Tidy little kitchen and incredible views and close location to Govert’s Leap trail. Would recommend to everyone!
Loved the place, loved the area.
We had a great time , beautiful place . Great communication with owner
Great family house.
We had a wonderful mid winter holiday with our kids. Everything was provided in the house and it was so warm and cosy. And a lovely view of the forest.
Great winter weekend getaway
We had a wonderful weekend away with friends at this very comfortable cottage. On a very cold winter's weekend, we found the house to be wonderfully warm with a lovely slow combustion heater, heaters and electric blankets. The kitchen was very well provisioned with every utensil, pot and plate that might be required. (Unlike other places we have stayed).
The check in process was very simple and Phil was very easy to communicate with - even allowing us early entry and stoking the fire ready for our arrival.
I would highly recommend this house to others.
Blackheath is a mountain village at just over 1000 metres altitude at the top of the Great Dividing Range. It's an area of great nature beauty away from the bustle of Katoomba and has good walking tracks including the recently refurbished Grand Canyon walk. The house directly overlooks the walking track to the Govetts Leap lookout.
