About this property

Georgetown Square Minutes From Riverside, Countryside Farm Home, Family & Pets

Experience the evolution of vacation travel - stress-free countryside living at this one-of-a-kind Texas Hill Country home. Situated among centuries-old live oaks on a mile of San Gabriel River frontage (river is not visible from the house, but is a 5 minute walk or drive through the pature), 172 acres of working farmland, and full of history. This Georgetown farm is sure to captivate the whole group with its stunning views, terraced patios and original charm.

Throughout this thoughtfully designed home, you'll marvel at unique touches that speak to its special appeal. From the hand-laid stone pulled from the river, to the pond with fountain. You'll even find framed reproductions of art painted by previous owner and artist C.P. Montague (who happened to be one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorites) decorating the walls.

The open living area offers plenty of air conditioned space to catch up with friends, while the gourmet kitchen provides all you need to prep family-style meals, including a dishwasher for easy clean-up. Curl up with a book by the wood-burning fireplace (wood provided), host family movie night on the 62" flat screen Smart TV and DVD player, or stream your favorite show through free Wi-Fi on your devices. For those of you needing to work from while visiting, the Internet tower is in the top pasture, so you will have hi-speed Internet!

Two luxurious king suites come complete with light-filled sitting rooms and beautiful linens, while a queen sleeper sofa with an additional 4" mattress topper in the living alcove, or a 22" queen self-inflatable mattress with comfy bedding creates room for up to 8 travelers. If you brought the little one, a Pack-n-play and strap-in booster chair with tray, and a small canvas stroller are available too. Just let me know.

There are two baths; one with a walk-in shower, the other with a square soaking tub. A front-load washer and dryer helps keep packing light.and addition

An entertainer's paradise lies just outside! Relax with a glass of wine on multi-level terraced patios while listening to the song birds, or the fountain in the pond below. Fire up the charcoal grill and dine alfresco with the whole group. At dusk, a fire pit awaits for story swapping, S'mores making, listening to the Great Horned Owls, and stargazing.

Just 10 minutes down the road is historic Georgetown, with "The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas", with museums, man y wonderful farm-to-table restaurants and live music most nights. Wolf Ranch in Georgetown is a destination shoppers delight; shopping at IKEA and the outlet mall is just 20 minutes away; and you'll be in the heart of Austin in 30 minutes. Kalahari is a quick 15 minute drive from the farm. Sweet Eats Farm is very close to the farm and many guests enjoy visiting there, as well as InnerSpace Caverns in Georgetown.

Or stay close to home and find great fishing and tubing in the San Gabriel River, along with 172 acres for hiking and birding. Be sure to check out our free farm tour where the whole family can learn about local fossils, plants, search for arrowheads, engage with the animals, or take tractor rides. Don't forget your pets! Open acres of leash-free space are a dog's dream come true. Guests tell us their pets enjoyed their leash-free stay as much as they did!!

Ditch the city life for the serenity of the Texas Hill Country countryside and come see what it's like to live on a working farm and explore a living museum!

Our kids loved "the farmhouse" so much we visited for a second time after a year. We played in the river, and Ms Sharon even provided us some tubes! On top of that, she dropped off some delicious muffins as well. It's the perfect family Farmcation!

Beautiful, Comfortable and Relaxing Historical Home

This property is comfortable and in a beautiful setting. It is quite conducive to a family gathering while also offering a quiet, relaxing retreat atmosphere. If given the opportunity, we would stay here again.

unique property, lovely hospitality

A working farm with a spring creek and a short hike to a lovely river. The owner, Sheron, was a delightful hostess giving us tours of the (extensive!) property, bringing us fresh-from-her-oven muffins, etc.

Family Reunion in the Hill Country

Rocky Overlook provided a wonderful setting for our family reunion in the Hill Country. The house was beautifully decorated and the beds were very comfortable. Sheron was a pleasure to work with to arrange our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. I would highly recommend this property.

Loved Scurlock Farms

We had a wonderful week at Scurlock Farms. Sheron is the greatest hostess, from the tour, to the muffins, and the great accommodations, it exceeded all of our expectations. We loved the daily hikes down to the river and the bird-watching. Highly recommend staying here.

A Memorable Experience

Note: I actually believed I posted this eight months ago but I guess because there was a glitch it didn't go through.I stayed here with my husband and kids and we had the best time! Not only was the rental clean, comfortable, and well maintained but the location was just gorgeous. We got a lovely tour of the property and saw the most gorgeous view of the cliffside and river. Our kids loved relaxing on the hammock outside and meeting and feeding the cows and.goats. We had a blast and hope to stay again! Highly recommended

peaceful retreat with beautiful view

My family (six of us) enjoyed our stay at Rocky Overlook. It is a beautiful home with an interesting story, just the kind of place my family loves to find. It is not far from the busy I 35 corridor, so it is easy to access Georgetown, Round Rock and Austin, yet it is in a peaceful location away from the crowd. It is spacious and clean, and the owners are so hospitable. We would definitely stay here again!

Property owners provided gracious welcome and hospitality. The history and beautiful artwork added to the overall beautiful setting. We look forward to returning!

Very serene location-just a quick 10 minute drive to Southwestern University. Love the history of the home! The owner made us delicious homemade muffins with their fresh eggs upon our arrival- my son said they were the best he'd ever had! Nice and clean and comfortable. I highly recommend for a relaxing getaway!

Great place to stay and play.

My family and I stayed at the overlook property for 4nights. It was a great place. The layout of the house is unique and the one shower took some planning to ensure we all showers, but over all the stay was great. Sharon’s tour and muffins made us feel very welcome. The “free reign” of the property was the highlight for us. We went to the river and spent the day.

This place was perfect!

My expectations were exceeded. The delivery of freshly made muffins, a hayride, feeding goats and chickens. Being able to pick vine-ripened tomatoes and having a fully stocked kitchen. Topping it off with breathtaking sunsets. There were so many unexpended pleasantries, we can’t wait to go back.

We had the privilege of staying here for our daughter's graduation from Southwestern in Georgetown. We entertained a large group & there was space for all. Beautiful retreat with amazing patio complete with waterfall & firepit....large kitchen, well-equipped. Short walk to the river~ Sheron's home-made muffins are to die for...secret...ask for the almond poppyseed! We hope to have the opportunity for a re-visit soon!

Georgetown Get Away

The property is very scenic and relaxing. Access to the river was easy and rewarding even though the water level was low due to the drought. The house is very well kept and well stocked. We enjoyed the wild bird variety and the deer. Sheron Scurlock took us on a tour of the property and gave some history which made us love it even more. Access to Georgetown and Round Rock was easy and fun. We would stay there again.

Dan and I both grew up in Rockdale. I grew up on a small 3 acre farm and Dan grew up in town. We were childhood sweethearts and both attended Baylor University.

I love to garden - there are even kitchen gardens for our guests to enjoy!, and I am an avid reader. Since I have retired I have more time to volunteer. I have volunteered at The Caring Place, a local non-profit in Georgetown with an upscale thrift store. Many guests have enjoyed shopping there - sometimes more than once!

Our youngest son, David, was 6 weeks old when we moved to the farm and he and his family live on the farm. David chose a home site along the bluff and built his home. He is a Georgetown motor officer, so if you see a police car on the drive, there is no problem - it is just David coming and going!

Our oldest son, Daniel, sold his IT business in Dallas and moved back to the farm in 2018! He and Sherry are avid gardeners and cooks/chefs. Look for some of their homemade goodies in the home that you can purchase.

My nephew, Grant Burnham with Grant Burnham Ceramics has made custom mugs and tankards for me, and guests have loved them as souvenirs. they are in the homes as well. Grant makes them, then fires them in the kiln on the farm. He photographs them on the terraced patios of Rocky Overlook.

As you can tell, Scurlock Farms is a family affair! We have all loved meeting and getting to know our guests as we meet them out and about the farm or while giving tours or tractor rides. We have had guests from all 50 states and 29 countries! We take great pride in what we do. I believe we offer a boutique farm stay experience to our guests. Not boutique as in "fancy schmancy", but boutique in providing a one-of-a-kind experience to our guests. I gave a tour this afternoon, and as I dropped a guest off, she commented, "Thank you so much. You made me feel like a member of the family!"

Why they chose this property

When Mom and Dad bought this beautiful piece of property, they gave each of their 5 children the option of building a home at a location of our choosing. Dan and I jumped at the opportunity and were the only ones to take them up on it. We moved to the farm in 1971 and built our current home in 1977.

After my dad died in 1986 Dan and I began buying the farm. When my mom died in 2010, she left her home and art studio to us.

We've raised our family here and made the same offer to our two sons and our youngest took us up on it, and he built a beautiful home for his family in the middle of the property.

Our oldest son can't wait to retire and return to the farm, and he bought a third short-term rental home on the farm.

Rocky Overlook and The Palette Pad are the heart of the farm and I could not even think of selling them. I didn't want them to fall in disrepair from not being used, or vandalized. Both are so unique that I wanted to share them.

My sisters helped me and we totally remodeled the interiors of both and the results have been spectacular. It has been so gratifying to share my parent's dream home, my Mom's art studio, their history, and talents with others.

In each house, I have a notebook with the story of their searching for and finding the property and building the houses. Also, the story of mama's painting and how she became C. P. Montague and a favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The joy and appreciation that guests have when staying there are a living tribute to mama and daddy!

What makes this property unique

This large, open home was designed around centuries-old live oak trees. It is constructed of river rock; every rock was picked up at the river on the property by Sheron's parents, Bill and Pauline Thweatt. The home construction is very unique - Mama designed it around the large heritage oaks that surround the home.

Guests have marveled at how the rock was laid - all of the grout exactly the same depth and smoothed, and the lines of rocks precisely straight. Mama laid all of the rocks that show on the front of the houses, the columns in front of the homes, and the interior rock fireplace walls. Daddy laid rock on the back and sides where they would not be as visible! Daddy did an outstanding job, too, but the artist in Mama had to have the very straight, precise lines!!

There are special rocks interspersed with the river rocks and Mama could tell you a story about each one. I am sorry I didn't write those stories down.
