Mallacoota is an amazing place to visit with it's pristine waterways, forests & beaches. It would take days to explore the many arms & bays of over 300km of waterways & coastline. It is one of the last unspoilt places in Victoria. Nearby Croajingolong National Park is one of only 12 World Biosphere UNESCO reserves in Australia. The 87500 hectare park is home to 52 mammal species, 26 reptile species & 306 bird species representing half of Victoria's and a 3rd of Australia's total bird species. There are 40 species of migratory seabirds & waders and 6 owl species. Plus threatened wildlife including Ground Parrots, Eastern Bristlebird, Smokey Mouse, Grey-headed Flying Fox & the Australian Fur Seal. It is truly a very special place.
NOTE: We are a bit old fashioned - there's no air-conditioning! The house is breezy, being not far from the water and we have fans in the lounge and bedrooms.

About the host
Hosted by Sonia Grothe
Hi there. Your owners Dirk (signwriter & artist) and Sonia (photographer) hail from an hour up the road in Pambula, just over the NSW border. We are self-employed small business owners and love taking a drive down the road to visit beautiful Mallacoota. We renovated the property ourselves and a lot of blood, sweat and tears has gone into it over the last decade. We hope to retire here one day. In the meantime, we love to share the house with our wonderful guests, many who have been staying with us 10 years.
Why they chose this property
Definitely the location, the privacy and the ambience set Spirit Level apart from other properties. This house has personality plus! Wander to the shops, to the pub, the lake or hook up with one of the many walking and biking trails that lead off in all directions. The beach is about a 20 minute walk or a 2 minute drive.
What makes this property unique
The first time we saw the property, even though it was slightly run down, we started giggling at just how cute it was. We later found out the home was previously owned by Mr & Mrs Nailer - he was a window dresser and she was seamstress at 'Georges' - a old style department store in Melbourne. The house has a genuine charm and we love the uniqueness of it. It's a little bit kitsch and feels like staying at your grandparent's beach shack. We have retained nostalgic touches, adding some modern comfort. It's a return to the days of the good old-fashioned Aussie beach holiday!
