About this property
Camphill - Original 1860's Stone Homestead
LARGE GROUPS OF 16 GUESTS CAN BOOK both Camphill Homestead (8 guests) and Camphill Cottage (8 guests). Please see Camphill Cottage listing. The venues are situated 250m apart across green paddocks.
Camphill Homestead is beautiful, authentic, and retains all the original features of the country home of the 1860's. The original sandstone and random basalt stone walls provide a view into the craftsmanship of the historic early Victorian era keeping the house cool in summer while the internal fires warm the stone in winter.
The house maintains original architecture in two halves with kitchen and living separated from 4 huge bedrooms by a Tuscan courtyard/breezeway covered in vines. The main bathroom is also in this breezeway with a rustic chic style of the era complete with original porcelain claw foot bath. The second bathroom has shower and toilet and stained glass windows.
The living room has original wide hewn cypress pine floorboards and cathedral ceilings and two large wood fires. There is also a 19th century wood fired stove in great working order that delivers mouth watering dishes. For those less inclined to try their hand at cooking "the old way" there is a modern well equipped kitchen with gas stove, microwave and all mod cons.
Bedrooms are large and reflect the Victorian period, two of which face north with french doors opening onto a wide sunny verandah draped in old roses and vines. The views over the valley and horse paddocks are spectacular.
The gardens are established with deciduous and fruit trees, vine draped abhors, and an acre of space for children to play or to curl up with a book.
Camphill Homestead provided a stop for Cobb & Co stage coaches to change teams of horses, travelling from Mudgee to Sydney and return. The old Blacksmith's forge is still housed in the original slab hut.
For the past 100 years the property has kept to tradition as a horse establishment raising and training Thoroughbreds, and more recently show jumpers and dressage horses.
If you are looking for modern, minimalism with en suites and shiny surfaces – then this is probably not the place. However, if you prefer to experience a slice of Australia's early settler history surrounded by green paddocks, set against a mountain backdrop of natural bushland only a five minute drive from historic Rylstone – then you will not be disappointed.

The jewel of the region is Gunguddy - featured on Getaway - the Wollemi National park and head of the Cudgegong River. Kayak hire, boat tours, fishing and swimming provide activities through summer months.
The historic gold towns of Sofala, Hill End and Hargraves are only a 25 minute drive away and are well worth a visit to the old pubs and miners huts of early settler Central West.
Or just laze around with a book or amble the laneways of the property and Australian bush.

We really enjoyed our stay. Just a couple of points of feedback.
Cleaning could be better. Top of the range hood and fridge were quite dirty, spider webs everywhere.
The listing might need to be updated. We couldn't find the second bathroom, not sure where that was.
Limited condiments, herbs and spices. No yoghurt, jams, rustic sour dough (just a loaf of bread, that's fine). Very limited coffee beans but the cappuccino machine was excellent.
Would stay again.
Amazing to stay in a piece of Australian history warm and cozy well supplied beautiful setting and lovely district especially the walks
Janet was a lovely generous host
Wish we were still there
Camp Hill has all you need for a wonderfully tranquil stay in a unique district. The house is full of beautiful historic features from the 1800’s and has all the modern touches needed. Janet is a thoughtful host and left us fresh milk, butter, eggs and bread. The coffee machine was a welcome addition. The dogs loved roaming the securely fenced property too and slept beside the fire. The electric blankets were perfect too! Thank you for a great stay, Janet.
My husband and I spent 3 nights at Janet’s house. We loved meeting Janet. She is absolutely wonderful. Janet provided us with great guidance about the area, including one of the best wineries, restaurants and hiking trails. There was no need for us to do our own research..We enjoyed every single place Janet recommended.
The house reminded us of French countryside. It is beautifully decorated and we loved its rustic style. Absolutely stunning. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to come back.
Gorgeous, sunny property. Very peaceful & relaxing. Glorious garden. Lots of country fun in surrounds. One problem in winter is you have to go outside to get to bathroom. really enjoyed our stay.
An absolute must-stay place, with a wonderful hostess (Janet). A weekend away for a 70th birthday celebration just wasn't long enough to enjoy beautiful Camphill cottage.

Wonderful stay - exceeded all expectations!
We stayed at Camphill homestead over Easter with friends and had the most wonderful stay. The house is beautiful and full of character. It is so comfortable with big fluffy doonas and all equipped and welcoming with fresh flowers and scented candles all around. The gardens are amazing full of colourful flowers and beautiful trees. The house is surrounded by lush green paddocks where stunning horses graze. The view from the deck is fabulous and we had a wonderful time there having breakfast or a drink before dinner. The house is very well heated with a well appointed kitchen and bbq.
There is a lot to do in the area - kayaking in the Wollemi park, visiting the local wineries and olive press, enjoying the local pub or yum cha at Rylstone, visiting the local markets and wineries at Mudgee. We went as far as the Drip for a fantastic walk and amazing view over the bush forest.
Janet was the most welcoming, generous and fun host full of great advice on what to do in the area. She also had our teens completely mesmerised by her country knowledge and the rides in the Range Rover to feed the horses or get some hay locally!
Thank you Janet for this magical country break. I can not recommend it enough!

Beautiful historic house in an idyllic setting
Our stay was wonderful, an amazing historic house, well presented with comfortable beds, lots of space for the children and dog to run around. Fresh flowers, locally made bread and a roaring fire on arrival. Our only regret was spennding so much time discovering the area and not leaving enough time to stay in and appreciate the creature comforts and beautiful landscape. Thanks Janet.

Glorious piece of Australia
A group of 8 of diverse ages had a fabulous week-end at Camphill Homestead, and will definitely be back, but next time for a week as there is so much to see an do in the area.
The historic homestead has a wonderful history and the views over the property are glorious.
Beautifully decorated, cosy fireplace and bedrooms. We enjoyed exploring the property and meeting the magnificent horses. We visited historic Rylston and the amazing De Beaurepaire winery and Mudgee - lots of good food and wine around the fireplace.
Look forward to exploring the natural wonders with a bit more time on our next trip.
Janet is a delightfully welcoming host, and I could not recommend either Camphill Cottage or Homestead more highly for a country week-end.

It gets better every time we stay
This was our second stay at Camphill and it does not disappoint. Janet is the most welcoming host. Such a beautiful property. Very relaxing enjoying the views and we also loved listening to and watching the Black Cockatoos every day.
We would always recommend Camphill to anyone looking to get away from it all and enjoy all that the local area has to offer.

Beautiful property - perfect holiday
We so enjoyed our time at Camphill. Big high ceilings, wonderful comfortable beds and sublime views looking back to Wollomi- what more could you ask for? Janet had the kids (and the adults!) intrigued while she fed the horses - whilst some of us just sat on the verandah reading our books. Perfect! Ryalston is a perfect get away for everyone.
