Capacious Coastal Villa for Memorable Moments Along Coast of Maine
Imagine discovering a property with three (3) dwellings nested perfectly to ensure exceptional view corridors to the sea, while also allowing a family or friends group to mingle but also elude each other.
Delight in a well-appointed, not stuffy but comfortable, secluded compound. A place you can nap after tennis, enjoy a good coffee and book, or stay up late under the stars sipping wine with old friends and laughing effortlessly.
Now consider that it’s in the most adorable seaside village in Maine. A legendary and near mythical village- with a local cast of characters not soon forgotten.
This is an extraordinary bundling of three structures on the same property. A Big House, adjacent Tiny House and a new Carriage House. This allows a cohort of friends & family to gather together, dine under the moon or also isolate with their immediate family for indoor dining, etc.
Our home is airy and light-filled; south-facing with ample decks, terraces and even a rooftop lounge from which to take in the salty air and sea breezes; enjoy a shared meal ‘al fresco’ or play board games with your multi-generational horde. In other words our cottage compound is designed specifically to induce relaxation and restore tranquility.
The lot sits high atop a hill in Castine with panoramic views of the bay, it is south-facing; ensuring lots of sunshine and, aside from a neighbor to the West, quiet and private -unlike most in Castine.
Nine bedrooms yet with ability to accommodate others -on fold out couches, etc -means the price/ person is cheaper than a youth hostel but as splendid as any area hotel. In other words it’s a great value, leaving plenty of hard-earned dollars left over for lobster rolls, ice cream and frozen drinks!
Simply put, it all came together in the last two years: the Tiny House (guest bedroom and/or Zoom room) and Carriage House enjoining the Big House to create an idyllic retreat space -especially during this difficult chapter we’ve all found ourselves.
Skip the elevators and daily change overs, the license plates from ‘round the country and the hustle and bustle of nearby Bar Harbor- this summer treat yourself and your loved ones to a private estate, near to almost anything you desire (tennis, golf, hiking and biking, beach fires and s’mores!) but yet far from stranger danger!

Marge and her extraordinary family are always welcome at our home! We may even pay THEM to come back!
Her communication was timely and thorough.
Her manner kind and gracious. Exceptional guests do exist- and Marge & Co. modeled behavior every host dreams about but rarely encounters.
They left the property better than they found it and found the humor in its eccentricity.
It is guests like this, akin to that perfect winning 50-yard golf putt that keeps us going as hosts.
Marge is the Arnold Palmer of guesting! We hope they return- or send similar friends & family!!
These 3 houses were perfect for our family reunion! There was room for all 3 generations to gather together for games in the BH and the CH. This meant that there was also always a place to go for anyone who just wanted to read or nap. The kitchens were set up for actual meal making and the yard was beautiful. Ted was a tremendous host and immediately available to answer questions.

Liked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
Disliked: Cleanliness
Good location but cleaning below standard
Good location, can accommodate large group in 3 houses,
many activities available. Our family has travelled around the world and I would not recommend this rental unless the owner make a major cleaning to eliminate the bad odour of the rugs (cats and dogs are allowed but we have none), moles and spiders.

Dear Guy and his guests-
Thank you for choosing our lovely property for your family retreat. We have shared our home with over 150 families for almost two decades- treating our home as if it was their own.
However, you are the rare guest that did not.
Your review is erroneous and spiteful. You’re guests destroyed a family heirloom: A beautiful 9x12 wool/silk rug that we received as a wedding present- only five years ago!
We pride ourselves on presenting a well maintained and well appointed home- and have done so for 18 years. We’ve achieved ‘Premier Host’ status and almost always get FIVE star ratings. Why: because we go to great extremes to ensure everything is perfect! Your review is an outstanding anomaly. (Future guests can confirm that by scrolling the other reviews)
And, I belive your review is a thinly veiled effort to deflect blame for ruining a carpet and damaging a mahogany floor. By your own words, after THREE inquiries that went unanswered, you stated that the french doors to balcony off of the primary bedroom “did not close properly and swung open during a torrential rainstorm whilst you were away for the day.” Uhm. This was not mentioned in review or to me for several days (after departure) after multiple texts, emails, and calls. We’re left unanswered. The doors work fine, always have, no one has ever mentioned an issue. Operator error happens - simple tele call and I could have explained: you just need to lift the handles up to lock into place. Super simple.
You dragged the drenched rug down two flights of stairs- soaking wet- and left in a heap on first floor!?! (And two others that were not damaged, nor smelled). Never once did you alert me to this “smell” concern or that you did not know how to secure the French doors properly.
You did not call or text or email with ANY concerns at all that week but instead ignored my inquiries asking if all was well. Only upon departure did you text me that you’ve left a note explaining your “disappointment”.
Just to be clear: I have a handyman that literally lives next door. My ‘Clean Team’ are only 30 minutes away and available to resolve any issues. Furthermore, although I live a few hours south if the concern is great enough I am more than willing/ able to drive north and resolve.
It is not fair for you to make false claims- “smells” and pet concerns when in fact a simple mistake aggravated by weather turned our turnover day into a nightmare as we had little time to resolve rug concern before next guests arrived. We rarely have dogs at property, no dogs reside there from Sept-May, and cats have never been allowed! All rugs are professionally cleaned 3-4 x /year! Moles- never seen one. Spiders: guilty as charged- especially this wet summer; albeit harmless ‘Daddy long-legs’.
In other words Guy- I apologize for having to make an insurance claim (damage exceeded $$8,000 between the ruined rug and damaged floor) but it does not give you the right to post false claims. (BTW: I have only filed 3 insurance claims in 18 years of renting our home! We often overlook slight or accidental mistakes such as broken chairs, china or vases. ‘Ship Happens’ as we say in the maritime community). But, when it is egregious and you exhaustingly claimed it smelled of dogs yet would not answer WHY it was soaking wet- for three days- and resented that I was posting our exchange by text to VRBO I was left with no alternative. Furthermore leaving a 9x12 wool/silk area rug in a heap, preventing it from drying, essentially is what ruined it- that and the fact it absorbed stains from the hardwood floors. Rugs dry if cared for thoughtfully and immediately. We all make mistakes, if I had been notified when it happened; seemingly several days before your departure, I could have had our handyman transport to a rug cleaner and for a few hundred dollars the problem would have been fixed.
Guy, you had a responsibility to let me know what happened - early and in detail. You also had a responsibility to leave a fair and impartial, fully told review. Yours was clearly written out of spite deflecting blame to others. It has been our experience that dogs and their human companions are -more often than not- better guests than … some people: present company included!
Regrdless, I wish you and your family continue to travel the world safely and that your hosts are as conscientious and thoughtful as we are.
Woof, woof.
This was the perfect property for our family of 14 people. We had plenty of room to be together when we wanted to be, which was most of the time, and freedom to do to have quiet time apart. Castine is a beautiful, small New England village with its common surrounded by picturesque New England houses along side of the ocean. The people were very friendly. Easy access to the beach. Plenty of things to do or not.
Ted Regan, proprietor of the property, was very accommodating and helpful in any way, and easily reached.
We had an absolutely fantastic stay at this rental—perfectly designed for a large family reunion with plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms, and inviting common spaces ideal for both socializing and working. We shared unforgettable family dinners in the two spacious, fully equipped kitchens—one in the Main House and another in the charming Carriage House. The compound is thoughtfully stocked with everything you could need—pots, pans, grills—truly making it a home away from home. The location couldn’t be better: stunning seaside walks, leisurely picnics at Fort Madison and the Wilson Museum, and a convenient hub for day trips to Acadia, Blue Hill, Deer Isle, and Camden. The town itself is a gem. For dining, we highly recommend The Castine Inn for breakfast, The Breeze and Castine Variety for lunch or brunch, and Dennett’s for afternoon cocktails or a delightful dinner. Don’t miss the snack shack at the main town dock—it’s cozy and perfect for a casual picnic. What truly set our experience apart was the exceptional support from the owner, whose careful pre-planning and attentive help throughout our stay made everything seamless. If you’re looking for a picturesque coastal getaway that perfectly balances togetherness and tranquility, this is it.
Gorgeous place, comfortable, and overall fantastic experience!
This is a GORGEOUS property. The house is very comfortable and plenty of room. The gardens are beautiful, lush, and fragrant! I loved the tiny house! I could live in it! Everything is top notch. THE BEST cookware we have ever used in a rental. Nice dishes and glassware. So nice to have top of the line grills available, and gas cook tops!!! We actually cooked several meals because we enjoyed just relaxing in the beautiful space. The owner is super nice and everything went smoothly. I don't think there is enough space to write all I want to write here. Fresh flowers in vases awaited us. Chocolate!! A sweet thank you note. The place and spaces are extremely well thought out. Comfortable beds, nice hot water pressure in the showers. Pet friendly! If you are looking for an over the top nice place to stay and an owner who truly cares about his property and his guests, look no further! Thanks Ted for being such an awesome host!!!

Kim and her family were the type of guests we all imagine are mythical. She proved us wrong- great effusive communicator, thoughtful and appreciative of the little and large touches, she and hers are welcome at our home anytime! May other hosts reading this know: Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus -and leprechauns, and unicorns! If Kim comes knocking open your doors wide!!
Ted's Castine Coastal Compound was the perfect location for our family reunion. We used the Big House for my mom and the three siblings/spouses and the Carriage House for the adult children (two couples and two singles). This allowed the whole family to gather together in the BH and gave the cousins their own space to hang out together. The Tiny House came in handy for people to work during the day and for folks to gather later at night without disturbing those who went to bed. It's an easy (and pretty) mile walk into the town of Castine, which has two very good restaurants, an excellent bakery/breakfast spot, a seafood lunch shack and a small grocery store. There are plenty of other restaurants and cities/attractions within 30-40 minutes from Castine and Acadia is a little over an hour away. Plenty to do if you want to keep busy and very relaxing if that what you are looking for. Teds' Summah Guide provided ideas for dining and activities and he was always just a quick text or phone call away if we had any questions. Everyone at the reunion was extremely pleased with the location, which was nice since I selected it :). I highly recommend the Coastal Compound for family gatherings (it can sleep many more than we had if you have a larger family).

More please, thank you!
Fred was one of our most fond guests.
He and his family, from the first conversation, we’re fun and easy! They clearly enjoyed the cottage - and left it spotless!!
Some days, usually by late August I wonder if renting is worth it- then I read a review like Fred’s and realize this is a major reason we do it. It’s wonderful to share something special- that means a lot to your own family- with another family!
Fred and his family are welcome back anytime! And, if you’re reading this, YOU are too- if you’re like Fred;)!
This was absolute perfection for our family get together: enough space for privacy and enough space for meals, games and just being together. The house was comfy and well-appointed- everything from olive oil to umbrellas. Ted was wonderful about communication and had helpful info for the surrounding area. Castine was lovely and the bioluminescent kayaking was a lifetime highlight for many of us!
