This stay was interesting but great! So I am extremely picky. My number one concern is cleanliness. Upon checking I was amazed at how big this place was! Our kids were pumped! I don’t think I realized the exact type of place we were staying in. Definitely a refinished business/historic building. Super cool and unique. I do wish it was cleaner overall (floor and furniture) BUT the bedrooms were pretty clean, bedding was very clean, bathroom (we only used the bigger bathroom) was clean and those were the things that mattered most! We created so many great memories here! I would say it is best for a group of guys but even as a mom with three kids staying there it ended up being great!
We very much enjoyed our stay here at South Range. We had ample room to spread out, enjoyed the location, and enjoyed the array of activities the host had available to us.
We loved the unique spot that had so much history! Loved how spacious it was and the location in a small town, minutes from Houghton. The place was clean and ready to go. The host had maps with suggested areas to check out. We were not on a snowmobile or SxS trip, but the location is perfect for the trails in the area!
Accomodations were great for our group of snowmobilers. We were able to park 2 trucks and trailers in the parking area. Shelving right inside the door was handy for organizing gear. Open floor plan and bar was great. Would stay again!
The loft was a great spot for our stay. More then enough room and the owners are very nice. Definitely plan to rent here again next year.

Thank you for staying with us! We do have a couple other properties for you to check out also and if you bring your kids, the Sandy Hollow Lakefront Vacation Home is the perfect spot for families. Kayaks, paddleboat, fire pit with wood. Lots of fun. Thanks again!
The place worked out great for use & the open concept was a non issue for use. Also communication with the owner was very simple & we'll be staying here again!

All said it done it was a great location, many things to do at the property itself to stay busy (games and wifi with tv.) and lots to do in the surrounding areas. Host was attentive and kind. They stock the house with most of what you need and its good quality items. (Bed linen, toiletries, paper towel ect) Its a repurposed building so it definitely has it quirks. But nothing you wouldn't expect by looking through the listing. If i had any cons it would be that the weekend we stayed it seemed to be a bit of a rougher crowd. Don't know if it was other vacationers or locals but there were a couple loud fights coming from bars and people using excessive speeding up and down the road. I definitely wouldn't say that affected my trip any, would still stay again.
Great place to snowmobile out of!!! Older building but everything worked. Lot of open room for gear and hanging outFor the price we paid we all were very happy with what we got.
We are amazed at how big this property/apartment was and how clean it was. We have stayed in places where it wasn't as clean and this place was CLEAN. It is also spacious and well-stocked with kitchen gadgets and dishes. The bedrooms are good sizes, cozy and there are 3 of them.We only spent time there at bedtime and breakfast as we were just outside of Houghton-Hancock area and wanted to explore Copper Harbor and the Porcupine Mountains. We did have one evenjng where we watched a movie on Netflix. It was really a nice place to retreat to after a day of hiking and beach combing. We had a lovely stay and again, we were surprised at how big this place was and yet it was cozy. If we ever come back this way, we would definitely stay there again. The host, Vernon, was very quick to respond to any questions we may have. We really appreciate this! Definitely recommend!
Stayed one night to ride snowmobile up the keweenaw. Fantastic location, literally ON the trail. Great bars down the block. Hosts were very communicative and friendly. Clean place with tons of space to hang out. Nice use of an old building with cool history. Will be back!
Very large open room with plenty of seating at two bars and couches. Very capable kitchen to prepare culinary creations. Beds are super comfortable. Lots of space to store stuff. Perfect location for sportsmen, snowmobilers, and ATV riders
Charming and unique loft style apartment in quiet town
We really enjoyed our stay at this charming loft-style apartment in a quiet small-town building from 1910. The space was huge, with an open, airy living area that was perfect for relaxing and spending time together. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out comfortably. The apartment was well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. As with any historic building, there were a few quirks—like the bathroom lighting being a bit dim and the beds being average in comfort—but overall, these were minor compared to the character and unique charm of the place.Although the listing mentioned a washer and dryer, we couldn’t find them, but we didn’t ask the owner since we didn’t really need them during our stay.If you appreciate spacious lofts with vintage character in a peaceful small-town setting, this is a great place to stay. We’d happily come back!

Why they chose this property
Local businessman Jacob Baer began the construction of this commercial block in 1907 or 1908. However, he was unable to complete construction, and sold the partially finished building to the Kalevan Retaret, a Finnish society. The Kalevan Retaret, or Knights of Kaleva, was a secret society begun in 1898 in Belt, Montana and named after the Kalevala, a collection of epic Finnish poems. The organization was intended to preserve and promote Finnish culture; it quickly spread from Montana to the Finnish miners in the Keweenaw, with a chapter that started in Hancock in 1899 and moved to South Range in 1904. The Kalevans finished the building in 1910 and christened it the Kaleva Temple.
When originally finished, the Temple housed three commercial offices on the first floor and a Finnish social hall on the second floor. Later tenants of the building included the Sons of Italy, a dentist's office, a theater, a restaurant, an opera house, a hardware store, the justice of the peace, and the U.S. Post Office, which was located there from 1915 to 1977.
We have taken this commercial unit and transformed it into a large apartment perfect for nightly and weekly rentals. We look forward to continuing our growth with this unit and providing a great place to stay while you visit the area!
