Great location, perfect space for a family or group..

We loved the living area of this home. Kids played board games that were provided while the adults relaxed at the end of the day. The location on Platte Lake is beautiful and convenient to the many places to see in this gorgeous area of Michigan. Lake Michigan beaches are just 10 minutes away. Taking canoes, kayaks and tubes on Platte River was a highlight.

Great getaway cottage!

Very well maintained cottage situated nicely to many local attractions/activities. The lake setting was spectacular with its gentle breezes, the easy access to the waterfront, shallow dock area for swimming and accessing the boat area and sitting lakeside. The cottage is spacious with comfortable beds, access to laundry and nice kitchen area. We appreciated the fans in every room in case we needed them. Mitzi communicates consistently and aims to please her guests. Thank you Mitzi for all the area tips and helping us make it a vacation to remember!

Sisters Summer getaway

Great location, many outdoor activities available. Cottage was clean and well appointed. Deck needs attention- chairs are worn out/very weathered and uncomfortable. Suggest cleaning crew blow off deck debris each week when they clean. Bushes/plants around cottage are getting overgrown.

Beautiful Big Platte Lake Vacation

We had an enjoyable week staying on Big Platte Lake. The owner sent a quick text after we arrived to make sure we got settled ok. The cottage is located in a vacation area with lots of things to do. It was clean and more spacious then we had expected. The kitchen was well equipped with dishes, pots, utensils, etc. It would of been nice to have a newer large griddle and/or a fry pan. Especially if you like to make big breakfasts or if there is a fisherman in your party. The current fry pans are warped. The southwest bedroom with the queen bed had a slight mildew odor which I did not notice but my husband did. The washer and dryer came in handy for cloths and wet towels. From the large deck we had a nice view of Big Platte Lake. The lake access and dock are shared with other cottages on the property but it was not a problem. The lake bottom is sandy and it is fairly shallow for quite a ways out. Thanks MItzi for sharing your cottage and beautiful lake!

The area is wonderful but cottage was not cleaned properly

The owner was very responsive, especially initially. She answered all the questions, helped with local activities and super nice over the phone. The Platte Lake area is wonderful and within 10-45 minutes distance to many beautiful cities and sights. So many things to do. We did hiking and kayaking, went to beaches, the dunes, many towns, rented jet skis, went to Torch Lake, did some boating, etc. The cottage is decent size and has a very convenient layout. It is spacey for 2 adults and 2 kids. Two things that bothered us: One, it is a shared lot/shore area so all the six cottages on the same lot are very close to each other. It is quiet, however, so no one bothers anyone but it was a bit too close when you are eating outside, for instance. Second, the cottage was not cleaned properly for us. We were there during July 2020, right in midst of Covid... so, it was not even clean for a regular time, let alone Covid standards. For example, One bathroom had dirty footprints on the shower floor. The shower has scum all over the glass door and has not been cleaned for quite some time. The other bathroom has a shelf unit on the floor and all the dust and dirt underneath the shelf was still there. No one cleaned under it. The kitchen table had a plastic clear table cloth over the fabric cloth. The plastic cover was dirty. I wiped and the wipe was dirty... The place had a strong scent that was added to disguise the mildewy smell. We brought our own bedding but the bedding that was placed as a "decoration" smelled bad, like stale body odor. It would have been a good idea to wash them to freshen up the place a bit. We wanted to use the oven mitts and they were so dirty and smelled bad that we ended up having to wash them.. Underneath the family room couch, there were still old food pieces remaining from previous guests... We were very disappointed and ended spending a few hours on the first night cleaning the place. I let the owner know that if she wanted we could talk about it after our trip was over (I didn't want our kids hearing during our trip), I could give her some feedback about the place, and how it could be a better experience for others. She contacted me on our first morning there but did not take me up on my offer to listen to me after the trip. I am sure she has all the good intentions and trusted the cleaning person to do her job. I hope the place will be in better shape for future guests/customers.

Water Issues

I would give this little cottage 5 stars but for the water- the water is rusty: it tastes like rust, smells like rust, and turned our white garments slightly orange in the washer. We had to buy all cooking, drinking water and even used bottled water to brush teeth because the taste was so obnoxious. I contacted the owner who had no comment on the rust issue. She assured me there was no lead in the water- that it had been tested for lead.

Really liked the location and setting. Plenty of room. Deck and tale outside could have been cleaned off before we arrived. The green chairs on the deck were not usable due to the chalky dust that came off on clothes when sitting on them.

About the host

My family were some of the first pioneers of Benzie County. My Great-great grandfather Herman Baatz owned a sawmill on the west end of Deadstream Road in 1892. He homesteaded an area connecting Big Platte and Little Platte Lake. My mother was born one hundred years ago on Zimmerman Road in the white farm house that sits on the top of the hill. Her dad built a cottage on the south shore of Platte Lake in 1943. I've been spending summers on the lake all my life. It is a great place to be.

Why they chose this property

This 1,290 sq ft property built in 1950 was originally the primary home for the resort's owner. They rented out the five smaller cabins to guests during the summer and fall and then closed them up during the winter. This home has 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms and offers a lot of room and conveniences other smaller cottages do not have.

What makes this property unique

Two bathrooms, a dish washer, clothes washer and clothes drier.
