My aunt, sister and I spent a long weekend here to unwind and be together. The cottage was a wonderful place for this with a hot tub and a short walk to the beach. We enjoyed our time here!
Great place for extended family vacation. Close walk to lake.

Great vacation
My family stayed here with several friends and we had a wonderful vacation. The cottages were exactly as advertised and they were very close to the beach. Pool was good for little kids.

It is always great to hear how much people enjoyed themselves at out cottages. That is what it is all about. We often hear how much people enjoy the pool and the short walk to the beach. I hope we can host your family again in the future.

Cottages were very clean & nicely decorated. The enclosed adjoining porch was great that made it easy for us to go back & forth between the cottages. Kitchen/dining areas were great. Love the oversized stoves as it made cooking for 15 easy. Overall a very nice place.
Great set up with both cottages. Everyone loved their bedrooms and the common areas were great for having everyone together. Our host was very accommodating and easy to communicate with. I would recommend this property to anyone.
This was a great place to spend a long weekend with 18 friends. The two separate cottages were physically attached, so it was easy to move from one to the other by either the front door or the back door, and each cottage had its unique perks. The hot tub was refreshing, and the beach was easy to access. Would highly recommend.
Despite the frigid cold we enjoyed our stay in cabin A. It was clean, comfortable, and well equipped. Frank was great: when there was the chance we would have to cancel due to the weather, he suggested a change of plans and accommodated us.
We were really dedicated to hosting our families in a shared, yet private space, and we were not disappointed. From walks on the beach to dinners in town, this place has it all.
The houses are comfortable and inviting with all amenities, and our host was kind and thoughtful in our communications.
Renting two properties is no small amount of money, so we were apprehensive, but quickly found out there was no reason to be. We found an incredible experience and great owners, we can't wait to go back.
Loved Lake Michigan but challenging to get there from property and was misleading in presentation.

Unfortunately had this guest spent any time reviewing our listing prior to reserving, she would have known we are not on the beach but are a short walk to the beach and our hot tub is not available during the summer. Our description and captions under our photos explain when the hot tub is available. We did correspond with this guest during their stay and they reported everyone was having an enjoyable stay.
This cottage was a lovely place for a weekend getaway for 3 adult siblings, spouses, and our dogs. The house was very clean and had an open floorplan that was conducive to visiting and playing board games. The kitchen was very thoroughly equipped. While the cottage is clearly geared towards summer rental, it was also lovely in the winter. It was warm and cozy and we loved the easy access to Lake Michigan, which was stunning in the ice and fresh snowfall. The only slight concern for us was that the beds and pillows could have been more comfortable, but we are an older group so perhaps we feel that more than other renters, and otherwise the cottage was very comfortable. I would definitely rent it again.
6 friends stayed in cottage B over a weekend. Frank was very communicative and willing to troubleshoot problems with us. His rentals are clean and we appreciate the fully stocked kitchen.
We weren’t able to use the hot tub during our stay but Frank was willing to negotiate a refund for the inconvenience. Frank puts together a long and detailed information booklet for his guests. I appreciate the care he puts into his rentals.

The only problem was related to a malfunction on the hot tub which our specialist was attempting to repair. Unfortunately, what first appeared like a malfunctioning heater turned out to be a bad pump caused by a malfunction in the control board. All has since been repaired and functioning fine now.
Aside from the hot tub malfunction, Jeanne and her friends did tell me they had an enjoyable stay. We would welcome them back again in the future.
Overall we had a wonderful week at the cottages! Wonderful quiet neighborhood setting, fully equipped homes with all you could need in kitchen, etc and the beach is stunning and super close!
We had a minor issue with pool cleanliness when we arrived but the owner took care of it as soon as possible. Given the lake setting and amount of moisture, sand, etc the places are clean but our group felt some upholstered furniture needs updating. Both dishwashers gave off a bad smell when used and indicated need of deep cleaning or plumbing issues.
Again, lovely place to visit and we loved the beach access and space—we might be overly picky, just though some deep cleaning and updates would make it perfect!

It is always nice to hear when guests enjoyed their stay. In regards to the dishwasher odor, when issues like this occur, we can often provide a simple remedy. We were not made aware of this until after the guests checked out. In this case, a simple remedy would have been offered by running a cycle with nothing more than a bowl of white vinegar. We keep vinegar on site. However, the feedback is always welcome.

The house itself is a fine cottage getaway. It was good for a family weekend. Due to the amount of rules/regulations I felt it was hard to enjoy the weekend without thinking I was going to break a rule/get a charge. He accepts pets but they can’t go to the bathroom on the property, which I believe it’s a dirt road in the summer, so I’m not sure where they are to go. I was a little thrown off by the amount of times I had received email/texts from the owner. He wanted to know when we were arriving which check in was at 4 so I didn’t think it needed to be addressed when we would arrive. He also texted me twice during my stay to ask how things were going and also to remind me what to do when I check out. There is a ring camera pointing directly at the hot tub which I found unsettling. Overall my weekend with my family was great, I just wish I wouldn’t have been interrupted to make sure I was following the rules.

The reason we ask for anticipated arrival time is so we can turn the heat up to a comfortable level before the guest arrives. If no one stays in the house during the week, we keep the temp at 57 degrees. Some guests arrive at the check in time and some arrive much later. Most guests do not mind a text message asking if the guest has any questions or concerns. Our property has guests virtually every weekend and most are considerate and responsible, and there are still a few that do appreciate a reminder to review the departure checklist that we provide. Our "rules" as the guest refers to are no different than what you would be expected to agree to no matter where you stayed. We just ask you to actually read them so there is no misunderstanding later on. When you host as many guests as we do during the course of the year, having a system that allows for a guest to have relaxing stay and keep their housekeeping fees to a minimum can be a challenging balance.

Best for big groups, load of kids
Our twosome enjoyed Cottage B which has a gorgeous remodeled kitchen. Six burner stove makes me think large groups are the norm here. Bed we used was extremely comfortable, but sheets a little thin and wouldn't stay on the mattress. The Lake Michigan area is not particularly dog friendly, so we are grateful to Frank and the neighborhood association for allowing our dog in the cottage and on the private beach, especially for such a reasonable pet fee. As it turned out, our lab did not accompany us, and Frank graciously refunded our pet fee. Three concerns led me to a 4-star rating: 1) while the cottage is reasonably priced, very clean and fairly comfortable, it looks "well used" in places; 2) the beach is near (as described), but it is down (and up) 40 or more steps which would make it difficult/impossible for some (I do not recall this being mentioned in the details); and 3) six pages of rules for our stay, a lengthy rental agreement to initial/sign, a checkout list to sign. Frank explained the need for rules, and I absolutely agree that rules are important and necessary, but this seems excessive. We have stayed (with our dog) in VRBO rentals in at least five other states, and have not encountered this before. So many house/beach rules and the beach security cams made us a bit uncomfortable.

Thank you for your comments. Anyone who owns a home in a popular area knows you are held accountable for not only your own actions but also those of any guests you allow to use your property. When a private beach or other area commonly used by others is included, the accountability extends beyond the rental property. The 6 pages is not entirely "rules" but also important information about how certain things work, where things are kept and how to get to places of interest. We agree that most responsible people would not need to know all the information we provide however, after 17 years, we think we have seen just about everything that can happen when renting to 2 to 20 guests at a time. At an average of nearly 40 rentals per year, many of whom rent both cottages, we feel that an information packed welcome letter, serves not only as a guide to our guests, but keeps peace with our neighbors.
We've stayed in several VRBO homes and it probably doesn't make sense that I gave this an overall 4 star but every sub category was 5 star...but there were a few things that we had problems with.Heat - it was difficult to control the baseboard heaters (some didn't have a control know that we could find) and the back bedroom of Cottage B didn't have any heat unless you left the door wide open. My Texan teenage grandsons slept on the couches to stay warm.Shower - the water in the upstairs shower of Cottage B was hard to control. It had a hair line difference between scalding hot and freezing cold. Knives - while there are MANY knives they were very dull. Fortunately I've run into this problem in the past so brought along 3 of my knives - otherwise it would have been VERY frustrating trying to cut the ham or even slice veggies. The communication with Frank was GREAT. But our phones were slow in getting messages (maybe too many of us trying to use the wifi. The house manual is helpful (but a bit overwhelming). The binder does answer most questions you'd have and even has photos to help know where to put items when departing.IT WAS FANTASTIC to have two units so that the older cousins could stay up late without disturbing the younger cousins. There was a large folding table in the closet of one unit as well as folding chairs - we used this each evening so the 16 of us could all eat dinner together. It was WONDERFUL to spend quality time together.

I am sorry to hear you had an issue with heat in the rear bedroom. I was informed that you left a comment in the guest book about the heat. I tell every guest that is they have any question during their stay not to hesitate to ask. The baseboard heat problem was solved by resetting a breaker. Had I been informed, I could have advised the guest how to do this. It was a simple fix.
Wonderful stay for a bigger group! We had a great experience at this property. We were especially lucky that the other side of the cottage was empty during our stay, so we had extra privacy and didn’t need to share the backyard or jacuzzi with other guests. The location is beautiful, with easy beach access right across the street, which made our stay even more special. The house itself is a bit older, but very clean, comfortable, and well cared for. The kitchen was exceptionally well stocked with everything needed for cooking and serving meals. Overall, this was a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

About the host
Hosted by Frank K
Frank and his wife Mary Ann live with their two children Amanda and Brett in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Frank is an architect and runs a residential remodeling business. After selling a 2 flat that the couple owned in Chicago, they decided to reinvest in a property they could rent and also enjoy themselves. The property has undergone many changes through the different owners with numerous additions and remodels. After the first summer of ownership in 2001 the couple decided to make better use of the yard space surrounding the cottages. Where previously you could drive almost right up to the front door, it was felt that the cars should be closer to Schaffner Rd. This allowed the the remaining yard space to be laid out better for the pool, decks, spa, brick patios and landscaping improvements.
More changes are in the works and are usually done in the off season. Our goal has been to provide a clean, comfortable and properly maintained home and outdoor spaces with modern necessities like flat screen TV's, internet access, heated pool and A/C while not over improving the house to the point it looses it's by-gone era nostalgic charm. We focus on some not so obvious things like quality beds and linens, outdoor showers, preventative treatments for insects, easy maintenance of Weber grills, maintaining good relationships and membership with the Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce and our own Orchard Beach Homeowners Association. We have used the same cleaning service for the past several years due to their attentive, timely and excellent service. Almost 1/3rd of our summer rentals are repeat guests, We have one family that has stayed with us for 6 consecutive years.
Why they chose this property
The beach. It is all about the beach. The texture of the sand. The clear lake Michigan water. The sounds of the waves. and the most incredible sunsets. I have been to allot of beaches in allot of places from Florida to California and I can tell you all things considered, ours is the best. The water is clean, no salt, no rocks, no dead sea life. Just great sand, sun and water warm enough for a refreshing swim. It is amazing how much pleasure you can experience from something so simple. The laid back atmosphere and the fact that the house is such a short walk to the beach (200 yards, yes I walked it off) only made it more appealing. A business client had talked about how much she enjoyed her summer getaways to New Buffalo and how nice it was to have a place in such a peaceful setting yet within a reasonable drive. We had no idea that we would become one of her neighbors. We did not find this out until a few years later.
What makes this property unique
Exploring new restaurants and visiting the ones we like (Stray Dog, Brewsters, Capozios, Red Arrow Roadhouse, Timothy's, Oinks). Antiquing (rarely buy anything). Kids love the pool, everyone loves the beach, and when it gets too cold for the beach or pool in the fall, we have the outdoor hot tub. Gas can be up to 50 cents cheaper than Chicago at certain stations in Indiana off I-94. When we need to do any major shopping, Michigan City, Indiana and Benton Harbor, Mi. have huge shopping centers and are each within 20 minutes. Go to Michigan City if you are running late due to the time change.
