About this property

Muckleford Forest Cottage - Quiet bush stay with dam, pizza oven & wood fire

Muckleford Forest Cottage is a cosy mudbrick stay designed for slow days close to nature. Set on 20 peaceful off-grid acres beside a beautiful dam on the edge of Muckleford Forest, it offers a quiet and comfortable base for couples, small families or friends looking to unwind, explore and enjoy the outdoors. Just 12 minutes from Castlemaine, it feels peaceful and away from it all while still being close to great coffee, galleries, markets, shops and supplies.

Inside, the cottage has warm textured walls, timber ceilings and leadlight windows, with an open-plan living space that feels simple, character-filled and relaxing. There is a leather couch, comfy chair, dining table, books, games, a bluetooth speaker and a guitar. There is no TV by design, inviting a slower pace and more connection, though Wi-Fi is available. In cooler months, the wood heater keeps the cottage cosy, with firewood provided.

The bedroom has a queen bed and a double bed in the same room, both with comfortable mattresses, quality bedding and a choice of pillows. When only one bed is needed, the double is prepared as a daybed for reading, stretching out or an afternoon nap. As both beds are in the one bedroom, the cottage is best suited to couples, small families or friends comfortable sharing the same sleeping space.

The kitchen is small but well equipped for easy holiday cooking, with a gas stove and oven, toaster, electric grill, bar fridge with freezer compartment, Nutribullet blender and a Breville Nespresso Creatista Plus with milk wand. A selection of Nespresso pods, locally roasted ground coffee, tea, full cream milk and basic pantry essentials are provided, along with a French press and moka pot for slower mornings. The bathroom is basic but clean, with a step-in shower, toilet and hand basin. Towels and basic toiletries are provided.

Life here flows easily between the cottage and the outdoors. The verandah and entertaining area include an outdoor dining table, picnic table, hammock, gas BBQ with wok burner and a large woodfired pizza oven, prepared before your arrival and ready to light. Down by the dam you’ll find relaxing chairs, a picnic table, a tyre swing and a firepit for evenings by the water. A kayak and small rowboat with paddles are available for exploring the dam, and life jackets can be provided on request. Guests also have access to a bush-style tennis and basketball area with basic equipment provided. Walking tracks begin straight from the property, with shorter loops as well as longer walks to places including the Red White and Blue Goldmine and Muckleford Nature Reserve.

The property is alive with nature. From the cottage and garden you’ll often spot a wide variety of birds, hear frogs, and see regular kangaroo visits. If you’re lucky, you may also come across wallabies, echidnas, sugar gliders or phascogales, and it’s not uncommon to wake to the sound of laughing kookaburras.

The cottage is set on our 20-acre property, with its own private outdoor area and guest access to the dam and surrounding spaces. Our home is nearby, separated by gardens and trees, so the cottage feels peaceful and private. The driveway is shared, and you may see us near our home, but we are respectful of guests’ space and do not use the cottage, entertaining area, dam area or tennis court during your stay. We usually greet guests in person on arrival, answer any questions and share a few tips for the pizza oven or local area. After that, we leave guests to enjoy their stay in peace and are available if needed.

Being off-grid is part of the charm and slower rhythm of the place. The cottage is comfortably set up for everyday use, including lighting, Wi-Fi, kitchen appliances and normal device charging. We do ask guests to use water thoughtfully, and EV charging is not available at the cottage. A high chair can be provided on request.

Dogs are welcome. They’re welcome inside, but not in the bedroom or on furniture. Please bring your dog’s bedding, and make sure dogs are clean and dry before coming indoors. An XL crate can be provided on request, and a dog bowl and dog towel are supplied. There is a large fenced house-yard area, though small dogs or determined escape artists may still get through gaps in the fencing. Dogs may only be left unattended by prior arrangement.

This is a stay for guests who value nature, outdoor living and the simple comfort of a quiet country escape.

Beautiful bush setting property, pet friendly is a bonus. Very quiet except for the birdlife. The indoor fire heats the place just perfectly and the pizza oven was great for a nights dinner. Directions to the property were easy and spot on. The host explained how everything worked and was super easy to deal with. The cottage is set up with everything you could need. Excellent kitchen utensils etc. Perfect few days in a perfect location. Would love to stay again when in the area.

Elbert’s property was a perfect choice for a quiet getaway with our two dogs! The dogs loved the space to run around and we had a great time hanging out by the dam, in the canoe, playing tennis and stargazing at night. Elbert also gave some great recommendations for things to do in the area and we even went on a bush walk following one of the trails he’d mapped out. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend!

Lovely property in a super handy location

This was a well appointed dwelling with all the mod-cons you need and without the ones you dint’t (like TV). Great sized property, the dogs really enjoyed it. The hosts were very responsive and helpful.

The cottage and surrounds were inviting and peaceful. Bed linen was beautiful, though we did find the mattresses too firm for us. Everything we needed was supplied and the fireplace kept the cottage cosy and warm. We also enjoyed the bookcase filled with an interesting mix of books and games, as well as the hammock and a fire by the dam to take in the beautiful starry sky. Elbert was friendly, welcoming and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Home away from home

Cozy, clean, mud and brick cottage on a large property, with bush tennis court and a dam. Elbert welcomed us to the property with a fire prelit in the woodstove with enough firewood and kindling to last the trip. A chat about the local area and expansive property followed, with instructions on how to use the woodfire oven. Over the weekend we enjoyed the local hospitality and the excellent accommodation. 10/10, will stay again!

A tranquil retreat

Muckleford Cottage was the perfect place for a weekend out of the city. Myself, my partner and our dog needed somewhere to stay that was close to a friend's birthday celebrations in Campbells Creek. Despite being just 12 minutes from town, the property was located in lush bushland that feels secluded and serene. The cottage itself is extremely cozy, clean and neat, with every comfort provided and more. The smallest of details were thought of like bandaids in the bathroom or incense in the lounge. Though we didn't use the fireplace, all wood and kindling was provided and ready to go and the air circulator did a great job at keeping the place cool in hot weather. Waking up early and wandering the bush trails that surround the property while the sun rose was a real highlight. Elbert was a gracious and friendly host who was more than happy to provide suggestions for places to eat and things to see. I would happily stay here again and would recommend it to anyone seeking some quiet time in the bush. Thank you Elbert and family!

About the host

Hosted by Elbert

Host profile image

I’m originally from the Netherlands and moved to Australia in 2009 with my wife. We traded a fast-paced professional life for a slower, more intentional lifestyle and now love spending our time designing and creating beautiful spaces, exploring new places through road trips, camping and travel, and enjoying life close to nature. I’m especially drawn to simple, character-filled natural homes, off-grid living and tiny houses. As a host, I enjoy welcoming guests, sharing local recommendations, and then giving them the space, privacy and quiet to truly unwind.

Why they chose this property

We chose this area because it offers a beautiful balance of peace, nature and creativity. Being on the edge of Muckleford Forest means we can step straight into the bush, enjoy the birdlife and kangaroos, and feel surrounded by nature, while still being close to Castlemaine for great coffee, galleries, markets, local food and live music. What I love most is the slower pace, the sense of space, and the mix of wild bushland, historic goldfields character and a strong local creative community.

What makes this property unique

Muckleford Forest Cottage is a cosy off-grid mudbrick cottage set on 20 peaceful acres beside a beautiful dam, right on the edge of Muckleford Forest. What makes it special is the combination of quiet bush setting and memorable outdoor living — the woodfired pizza oven, firepit by the water, verandah, hammock, bush-style tennis court, and space to slow down and unwind. Inside, the cottage is simple, warm and character-filled, with timber ceilings, leadlight windows and a wood heater for cosy evenings. It feels peaceful and private, yet is only 12 minutes from Castlemaine.
