The home was charming and beautiful country setting. The horse was beautiful. We did notice Wi-Fi didn’t work through the whole home- could have used another one downstairs. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

Perfect little cottage on a farm in the country.

My grandson loved visiting the horse(Buck) being greeted by the dogs and seeing the bunnies. Beds were comfortable and welcoming after a busy day of sightseeing.

Perfect weekend getaway

This cottage is a cute vrbo. It was perfect for my family of 5 which 2 are adults. The pond was perfect for fishing and caught some bass. Its location is absolutely beautiful unfortunately it rained a lot so we werent able to do many of the things we planned. All of the property owners was so nice and so friendly as they all made an effort to meet us and chit chat. Overall had a great experience here and would definitely stay here again.

Lovely Getaway

My friend and I hadn't seen each other in nearly two years. This was the perfect, comfortable location for our friend reunion. The cottage had absolutely everything we needed. It is close to the mountain and to town but is in a tranquil, peaceful setting. The horses welcomed us every evening and the sunsets were spectacular! We would definitely return.

Best home away vacation so far!

We could not have been more blown away with the environment and scenery! When we pulled up it was pitch black and we had no idea excatly what we were driving up to but boy were we in for the best surprise when we woke up. The inside of the house was equally as beautiful with every inch tactfully decorated and warm and inviting. We are definitely coming back.

Another wonderful getaway!

We very much enjoyed coming back to “Buck and Noodle’s house,” thanks for having us again! We loved fishing on the ponds, sitting on the porch enjoying the views, and especially visiting with the pups and horses. On one rainy night we enjoyed dinner at Old Liberty Tavern and then working on a puzzle and watching a movie in the cozy living room. We also made the beautiful drive over the mountain to enjoy Natural Bridge, the Caverns, and the Safari Zoo. We are already excited to come back again soon!

Little Slice of Heaven

The pictures for this cottage don't do it justice. The entire house was spotless and made us feel right at home. The property and animals made it a perfect little get away from the normal busy life we have. Sarah's cookies were a nice little yummy surprise after a long car ride too. We will definitely be back again. My family and I highly recommend

44th Anniversary

We had a good experience from start to finish. We felt welcome and yet left alone to simply enjoy the beautiful farm and the surrounding views. The blue bird family residing next to the pergola was a special treat as were the curious cows along the fence line. We needed a few days to kick back and this property filled that need perfectly. Hopefully we will be back in the fall.

Great views, wonderful people to rent from.

We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this place to anyone wanting a quiet place with a wonderful view that is away from the crowd. This place is only a little ways outside of Bedford and in only a few minutes drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The property owners are great people and really came thru for us during the heat wave and installed 2 additional room air conditioners to ensure that we were comfortable. They asked us for a good time to come in to install the units and made sure that we were not inconvenienced. This is a beautiful area of the country with good places to eat and things to see and the people are so friendly and helpful. We hope to come back again, perhaps in the fall to enjoy the beautiful foliage.

Peaceful Weekend in The Country

Review of Mayhew Farms Cottage Mayhew Farms Cottage is a perfect blend of charm and comfort, offering everything you need for a relaxing getaway. The gas log fireplace adds a cozy touch, especially on cooler evenings, making it an ideal spot to curl up with a book or enjoy a quiet evening indoors. The screened porch is a standout feature—whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or winding down in the evening, it provides a peaceful space to soak in the surrounding views without worrying about bugs. The porch swing is an added delight, perfect for gentle rocking while enjoying the fresh air. The beds deserve a special mention—truly some of the comfiest I’ve experienced in a rental. They ensure a restful night’s sleep, leaving you refreshed and ready to explore or simply relax further. Overall, Mayhew Farms Cottage offers a wonderful mix of rustic charm and modern comforts. It’s perfect for a weekend retreat or a longer stay. Highly recommended!

Hidden Gem

Located off the beaten path and near the base of Sharp Top, my family loved this cottage and the picturesque surrounding farm. From the rose bushes to the swing, to the fish ponds and horses, this location is perfect! The beds were comfy, living room cozy, and the screened-in porch and pergola is an added bonus. Air-conditioners in all the rooms add to the comfort level. Another location fell through for us, and I couldn’t stomach the thought of paying the increased prices for hotels near Liberty University for our daughter’s graduation, and so I chose Mayhew Cottage. My husband thanked me again and again for finding such a wonderful spot. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Liberty University with the winding roads and lights, but allow yourself enough time, and it’s fine. In four years of driving from PA to Liberty, we have never enjoyed a stay as much as this one!

Absolutely Beautiful and Quite Charming

Tony and Margaret, On behalf of our family we wanted to say thank you so much for opening your home to us. Our family was honored to be your 1st guests. We came down for our daughters graduation from Liberty University. Wish we would have discovered this earlier and we would have come for her intensives. Your home had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and we rested really well. It was absolutely charming and more than comfortable for all of us and very relaxing. We enjoyed talking with your family and loved spending time with your adorable dogs Ellie Mae, Ziek and Daisy from up the road. The views were beyond amazing. We enjoyed playing frisbee and sitting on the swing. We had breakfast and dinners outside on the porch overlooking the property. The Mother's Day roses were beautiful. Thank you. We look forward to coming back!

Words Can't Describe the Views

This property at the base of Peaks of Otter has rolling hills all around for some breathtaking views. The cottage itself is nicely decorated with all the amenities our party of 5 needed. Beds and sofa were comfortable, lots of movies and puzzles, kitchen necessities stocked, it had everything we needed and then some. Although once you see the views you will not want to be inside. The Mayhew family was very accommodating and they were more than willing to share tons of information and the history of the property which I found fascinating. Upon our arrival we were greeted with chocolate chip cookies, YUMMY! A bit later the family came over to introduce themselves and invited us to a children's Halloween party that evening that they were having in their 100 year old barn. Noodle, their horse, was my 6 year old's daughter favorite, she still talks about him daily even though we have been gone over a week. The gold fish ponds between the two homes were my 3 year old's favorite place to go every chance he got. We also loved visiting with the dogs whom were very sweet. Although it was a short trip, 3 days, my family will cherish this vacation for a lifetime. We are already planning our return trip for April 2019!

The home was very comfortable and cozy. The views in the morning were lovely and the sunsets were just gorgeous! They left cookies for us which was a sweet touch and I certainly enjoyed them. There's plenty of space throughout the house. The shower was a bit short for my husband but he's 6'4. He did fine though. Just a note for anyone else. They leave a brush for you on the patio so I got to wake up and brush Buck one morning which was delightful!! I would definitely stay here again.

This is our go to place whenever we are in the Lynchburg area. We have stayed too many times to count now. This house has a well stocked kitchen with all the items necessary to prepare meals, bake cookies or even a cake! The beds are comfortable and the bedrooms have plenty of blankets. During the summer months, it can be humid when it’s really hot outside but the a/c units do make it comfortable, especially at night. The property is very calm and relaxing and you are free to stroll. The owners are very accommodating and accessible!! Highly recommend this cottage!!

WE STAYED FOR A LONG WEEKEND AND TO ENJOY A VIRGINIA DARE CRUISE. THIS HOME WAS ABOUT A 40 MINUTE DRIVE FROM THEN LAKE BUT THE COUNTRYSIDE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL THAT IT DIDN'T MATTER. THE RENTAL WAS AS EXPECTED AND WHILE NOT FAR FROM THE MAIN ROAD IT WAS SO QUIET AND PEACEFUL. WOU;D DEFINITELY STAY AGAIN.

Beautiful and Quaint stay

This property is absolutely charming...cute, quaint, and incredibly peaceful. The views are stunning, and the setting is quiet and relaxing. The home was well-equipped with everything we needed and had just the right amount of space for two adults and two young children. We especially enjoyed visiting Noodle the horse and visiting the on the property. We’d love to return for another stay!

About the host

Host profile image
My father-in-law purchased this farm in 1978 where he and wife, Margaret raised my husband and his brother. Margaret and Tony still reside in the large farmhouse which is located just a short distance from the property. My husband, myself and our three children live “over the pond and through the woods” from the cottage. As the more tech savvy one between the two of us, I manage the online reservations while Tony typically enjoys being hands-on with anything that’s needed during your stay. Feel free to contact either of us! We always love to get to know our visitors!

Why they chose this property

The farm was once a full working dairy farm, dating over 200 years old. Up until last year, we have rented this cottage as a long-term rental. We are pleased to now offer the cottage as short-term rental where visitors to the area can enjoy a home such as ours.

What makes this property unique

The peacefulness that our property brings is something you can't find many other places. As you swing under our pergola or sit around the fire pit and listen to the sounds around you, one can imagine what the farm would have looked like so many years ago. We are a history lover's dream!
