This luxury apartment in the South Wing offers a romantic retreat to visitors who wish to stay in an historic Scottish castle. It was once the Butler’s Apartment and the space has been transformed into a well-proportioned suite with fabulous views over the parkland.
The baronial style evident in the castle’s architecture is reflected in the bedroom with the extensive use of the Maitland family’s tartan for the statement king-size bed and other soft furnishings. The 3rd Earl of Lauderdale adopted the blue and green tartan that belonged to his wife Elizabeth Lauder’s family, and the Lauder tartan has been used as the Maitland family tartan ever since. The grandeur continues into the bathroom where a luxurious free-standing roll-top bath takes pride of place in the centre of the room.
In the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area a natural palette of colours give a relaxed but sumptuous feel. An oil painting from the School of Canaletto depicting a view of Venice has been loaned from the castle collection as have other items of furniture which are used throughout.
Just 10-minutes walk from the charming town of Lauder, the apartment is within easy reach of a number of local shops, pubs and a restaurant. Situated on the Southern Upland Way, there are plenty of opportunities for walks in the beautiful Scottish Borders Countryside from Thirlestane Castle. All guests get complimentary passes to the castle and a number of options to enhance your stay are available including food hampers and spa treatment packages.
